The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandMary Ellen GOODLIFFE - oldest daughter of Daniel Goodliffe and Mary (ATKIN)
Mary Ellen was born 27 October 1831 at Lambley Lodge. She was baptised at the Morcott Baptist Chapel in 1837.
In 1841 Mary was a school pupil boarding with Elizabeth BARLOW, school teacher. In 1851 Mary was now a school teacher herself, boarding with Mary Wingate a farmer at Glassmoor, Whittlesey, near Peterborough. Mary was working as a teacher at Whittlesey, which is where her maternal grandmother came from.
Marriage to Richard JACKSONMary Ellen married Richard JACKSON at the Oakham Baptist Chapel on 30 June 1852. Richard was 31 and Mary was 20. Richard had been born in Marylebone, London to George and Elizabeth JACKSON. George was a servant. By 1851 Richard and his widowed mother had moved to Empingham, Rutland where he had become a farmer of 133 acres.
Richard and Mary had 9 children:
In the 1861 census Richard and Mary Ellen were living at Empingham, listed as an occupier of 185 acres. In 1861 Richard was now a farmer of 270 acres. By 1881 Richard had retired from farming and was a corn and coal dealer in Walthamstow. In 1891 he was now retired with just their youngest son Edwin still at home. By 1901 Richard and Mary had moved to 100 Essex Rd, London.
Richard JACKSON died in London in 1909. In 1911 Mary Ellen was living with her grand-daughter Mary Martha COOLER at 23 Montpelier Rd, Peckham, Camberwell, London. As Richard's death was registered at Camberwell he and Mary were probably living here in 1909.
Mary Ellen JACKSON died at Peckham North on 14 February 1903 and was buried at Southwark Cemetery, London. The Children of Richard and Mary Ellen JACKSONCharles Edward Lucas JACKSON (1853-1922)Charles was born 23 June 1853 at Empingham. In late 1875 he married Catherine BYATT, a widow, born 1840 in Derby. In 1881 Charles joined the Mormon Church in Derby and after a brief term as president of the Derby Branch, Charles and Catherine, with their daughters Florence and Mary, sailed from Liverpool to New York. They travelled on to Ogden, Utah where they were met by Charles' cousin Arnold GOODLIFFE of Snowville, Box Elder. There is more detail about Charles, his family and his four wives here.William Goodliffe JACKSON (1854-1881)William Goodliffe JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham in 1854. By 1871 he was an apprentice with John TOMLINSON, a grocer at Belper, Derbyshire.
William Goodliffe married Carrie Elizabeth PECK at St Peters Church, Leicester on 13 March 1879. Carrie was born in late 1854 at Hallaton, Rutland to Thomas PECK and harriet Jane (PICK). They had one daughter - Margaret Eveline JACKSON born 1879, before William died at Leicester Infirmary on 3 October 1881. Their daughter Margaret also died in late 1881. After William died, Carrie appears to have joined up with a Charles CARTWRIGHT. The 1891 census has the couple, with three children, living at 5 Fortesque Ave, Hackney. Charles was a vocalist and Carrie a pianist. Carrie in this record is likely to be the widow of William JACKSON - her name was recorded as "Carrie E." age 34 and place of birth Hallaton.
Who was Charles Cartwright? It appears he was born as Austen (later Charles) CAPE in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1853 to Charles CAPE and Hannah Maria AUSTEN. He appears to have married Anne Louisa GREEN in Leicester in 1868. Between 1868 and 1871 the CAPE surname changed to CARTWRIGHT. There does not appear to be a marriage in the England & Wales registers for Charles CARTWRIGHT and Carrie JACKSON/PECK. As Charles was an "itinerant singer" on his death certificate it is possible they married overseas, but as Charles' wife Anne GREEN was still alive (now living as Anne Louisa JAMES) it is more likely they did not marry. Charles Austen CARTWRIGHT died at 5 Fortesque Ave, Hackney on 1 August 1891 of TB. He was buried on 9 August at Manor Park Cemetery, London. Carrie Elizabeth (now known as Caroline) died at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 25 November 1899, aged 42, of Brights Disease.
Mary Martha JACKSON (1855-1942)Mary Martha JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham in 1855. In 1871 she was at school in Louth, Lincolnshire, boarding with Ann Atkin and her daughter Margaret, the schoolmistress. There is more detail about Mary and her family here.Richard Henry JACKSON (1857-?1935)Richard Henry JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham in 1857. He was recorded in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with his parents. Richard is not in the 1881 census. By this date he was in the British Army. Richard JACKSON enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 23 November 1876 at Northampton. He was aged 18 and a shoemaker. His next of kin was recorded as Richard JACKSON, but it is the address that gives us certainty on his identity: 4 Mark House St, Walthamstow, which was the address for Richard and Mary Ellen in the 1881 census. He served in France from 23 Nov 1876 to 19 Aug 1880 and then in India from 20 August 1880 to 7 Dec 1888. He was discharged in Bombay on 7 December 1888 after his 12 years had been served. It is not clear exactly what Richard did after leaving the army. He may have travelled back to England, but the next we know of him he is in Australia, where he married Helen Douglas EDNEY on 5 May 1891 at Wagga Wagga. After leaving the Army Richard was now a mounted trooper for the NSW Police. Richard and Helen had two children: Lillie Constance JACKSON born Wagga Wagga on 2 October 1893 and Reginald Percy JACKSON born Wagga Wagga 13 January 1898. After leaving the police force, Richard bought the licence to the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Grahamstown, but he struggled financially and was declared bankrupt in 1906. Not long afterwards his marriage failed and his wife Helen filed for divorce.
After his divorce there are no other records for Richard. He may have died in 1935 in Sydney. In 1911 Helen Douglas married Colin Campbell TURNER in Sydney. Helen died in a private hospital in Randwick on 10 February 1944. Annie Elizabeth JACKSON (1859-?)Annie Elizabeth JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham in 1859. She was recorded with the family in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. By 1881 Annie was working as a "ladies maid" for a family in Nottingham. Annie then became a nurse. In 1891 she was working at the District Workhouse Infirmary in Birmingham. In 1901 she was visiting her second cousin Arthur Herbert GOODLIFFE in Wavertree, Lancashire. By 1921 she was working as his housekeeper at 52 Enborne Rd, Newbury. Annie Elizabeth JACKSON died at Newbury in 1924. Carrie Ellen JACKSON (1860-1940)Carrie Ellen JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham on 29 December 1860. She was recorded with the family in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses. Carrie Ellen married Ebenezer James JENNINGS, a civil servant in West Ham in mid-1881. Ebenezer at various times was with the Colonial Office and later with Customs. Carrie and Ebenezer apparently had five children (according to the 1911 census all were alive at that time) but only 4 are listed in the census records. The fifth was Winifred Grace born early 1882 in London. There is more detail about Carrie and her family here.Herbert Maurice JACKSON (1862-1943)Herbert Maurice JACKSON was born in 1862 at Empingham to Richard and Mary JACKSON.
