The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandHerbert Maurice JACKSON - son of Mary Ellen Goodliffe and Richard JACKSON
Herbert Maurice JACKSON (1862-1943)Herbert Maurice JACKSON was born in 1862 at Empingham to Richard and Mary JACKSON. He was recorded with the family in the 1871. In 1881 he was working as a grocer's assistant for Thomas RENNETT at Commercial Rd, Limehouse, Tower Hamlets, London. Herbert married Elizabeth Emma SPINK on 25 April 1886 at Tottenham St Annes, London. Herbert's occupation was "grocer". Herbert and Elizabeth JACKSON had five children but only 3 were alive at the time of the 1911 census (Dorothy and Herbert had died):
In 1891 the family was living at 100 Essex Rd, . Herbert was a grocer.
Shortly after the 1911 census Herbert and family emigrated to Sydney, Australia. The next record we have of the family is the marriage of Eveline Mary JACKSON to Arthur GOOD at St Barnabas Church, 16 Mill Hill Rd, Bondi, Sydney. (see below for details). In 1924 Herbert made a brief return trip to England, arriving in London on 19 July 1924 and departing 18 September 1924. Herbert's address in England was given as 33 Arcadian Gardens, Bowes Park (this was the address of his sister Mabel THORNBOROUGH) and his occupation going to England was commission agent and on the return was corn agent. The purpose of the trip is not clear. His father had died in 1909 and his mother in 1913.
Elizabeth Emma JACKSON/SPINK died in a private hospital in Sydney on 10 June 1917. Herbert Maurice JACKSON died in Sydney on 3 March 1943 aged 81. Both are buried at Waverley Cemetery. The children of Herbert and Elizabeth JACKSONMabel Annie JACKSON (1887-1978)Mabel Annie was born in Edmonton in 26 May 1887. She did not emigrate to Australia with her parents and younger sister in about 1912. Instead she married Robert THORNBOROUGH at Islngton St Mary on 7 September 1908 and remained in England. Robert was an accounts clerk for a provision merchant. In 1917 Robert enlisted in the Army but being aged 40 he was placed in a labour corps. He was demobilised at the end of 1918. They had one daughter - Marguerite Jackson THORNBOROUGH, born 18 April 1915. In 1911 Robert and Mabel were living at 59 Arcadian Gardens. in 1924 when Mabel's brother visited from Australia there were at 33 Arcadian Gardens. In 1937 they moved to 2 Uplands Way, Grange Park in north London, where they remained. Robert died at that address on 9 March 1949 and Mabel on 26 Jun 1978. Their daughter Marguerite Jackson THORNBOROUGH never married. She lived with her mother until Mabel died in 1978. It appears she remained at 2 Uplands Way until her death on 6 January 2007. Elizabeth Ethel JACKSON (1887-1972)Elizabeth Ethel (often known as Ethel) was born in Edmonton in 1887. She was recorded in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with her family. After that she seems to vanish from the records. She may have married Samuel ADAMS in 1915 in Edmonton. She may have emigrated to Australia with her parents but I cannot find he shipping record for the family. There is a death record for Ethel Elizabeth JACKSON in Mar 1972 in Surrey, aged 83 that is probably her. Eveline Mary JACKSON (1894-1990)Eveline Mary was born in Islington, London in 1894. In around 1912 she emigrated to Sydney with her parents Herbert and Elizabeth. On 29 March 1915 Eveline married Arthur GOOD at St Barnabas Church, Mill Hill Rd Sydney. (The church has been since been converted into three apartments).
Eveline and Kenneth had three children: Betty Doreen (1916), Arthur Westbury (1918) and Fidelis (1921). Arthur MURRAY died in Sydney 9 May 1932 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery. Eveline Mary died at Avalon Beach, Sydney on 13 April 1990. Return to Mary Ellen Goodliffe home page Last updated: 8 October 2021 |
