The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandEdwin James JACKSON - youngest son of Mary Ellen GOODLIFFE and Richard JACKSON
Edwin James JACKSON (1865-1927)Edwin James was born in Empingham in 1865 to Richard and Mary Ellen JACKSON. He appears in the 1881 and 1891 censuses with his parents. Edwin married Alice Maud WALTER in 1892 at West Ham. Alice had been born to William WALTER and Cecilia ( ) on 11 December 1867 and baptised at St Matthias, Bethnal Green on 5 January 1868. William was a cabinet maker, living at 8 Margaret St, off Hackney Rd. They had three children.
By 1901 they were living at 59 Jamaica Rd, Bermondsey, London where Edwin was a cheese monger. By 1911 they had moved further down Jamaica Rd.
There are two photographs of Alice attached to a family tree.
Edwin James JACKSON died around 23 July 1927 in London, aged 62. He was buried at Ladywell Cemetery, Lewisham, London on 25 July 1927 in a common grave with 21 other people. Alice Maud JACKSON (née WALTER) died prior to 1939. Her death is not clear in the registers. Family trees suggest 1936 but none of the ages or locations match. The children of Arnold and Amy JACKSONEdwin Walter JACKSON (1893-1922)Edwin Walter was born in 1893 in Southwark, London to Edwin and Alice Maud JACKSON. He was recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with the family in Jamaica Rd, London. In 1911 he was a Tailors and clothiers assistant. Edwin married Elizabeth Sarah TAYLOR on 9 October 1916 at St John the Evangelist Church, Walthamstow, Essex. Edwin served in the 4th London Rifles during the war, from 4 Dec 1916 to 13 February 1919. Edwin Walter died on 16 April 1922, at the Union Infirmary, Leytonstone. His home address was 63 Beresford Rd, Walthamstow. He had probably been wounded as his wife Elizabeth received a widow's pension of 20/- per week. Edwin was buried on 21 April 1922 at Queens Rd Cemetery, Waltham Forest, London.
Just before Edwin died in April Elizabeth gave birth to their son, Kenneth W(alter) JACKSON on 22 February 1922. Although I do not have the birth certificate to prove this, the birth index shows his mother's maiden name was TAYLOR. Elizabeth Sarah JACKSON (now known as Sarah E.) married Leonard Frederick COPE at West Ham in 1925. Leonard was a licenced property valuer. Leonard had been born in 1899 in Hackney London (registered Mar quarter Hackney) and was baptised on 2 April 1899 at St Peter in the Forest, Walthamstow, London. His parents were Frederick James COPE and Georgina Mary (BURNETT). Frederick was a shopkeeper sellling law stationery. The 1939 register has Leonard's date of birth at 28 June 1899 but this cannot be correct as the birth was registered in March and he was baptised in April.
In the 1929 electoral registers Leonard and Sarah Elizabeth were living at 13 The Cresent, Stamford Hill, London. By 1939 Leonard, Sarah and Kenneth (JACKSON) were living at 61 Beresford Rd, Walthamstow, next door to Sarah's address in 1922.
Leonard and Sarah Elizabeth did not have any children. Leonard died at 61 Beresford Rd, Walthamstow on 24 June 1942. His estate of £196 went to his widow Sarah. Sarah remained in the Walthamstow area, dying there in 1966. Kenneth Walter JACKSON (1922-1997) was born to Edwin Walter and Elizabeth Sarah on 22 February 1922. He was listed in the 1939 register with his mother Elizabeth (now Sarah COPE). After that he vanishes. There is a death record for Kenneth Walter JACKSON in Colchester, Essex in December 1997 that may be him. Herbert Spencer JACKSON (1895-1970)Herbert was born on 21 June 1895 at Bermondsey, London to Edwin and Alice JACKSON. He was recorded with the family in the 1901 census at 61 Jamaica Rd Bermondsey but by 1911 he was living at 45-47 Jamaica Rd with a clergyman and two divinity students from Cambridge University. At that time Herbert was a dental instrument manufacturer, but this occupation did not last long. Herbert served in the War with the British Red Cross Society (BRCS) from 17 Nov 1915 to 14 January 1919. He served in France with a motor ambulance brigade and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. After leaving the Army and the BRCS, Herbert went on to Jesus College, Cambridge where he graduated with a B.A. in 1923 and was appointed deacon at Holy Trinity, Eastbourne. Soon after this Herbert became a missionary for the CMS, opening a mission station in Gahini, Ruanda. Whilst on leave in 1931 he became engaged to Miss Frances UNDERWOOD, this being announced in the papers on 18 March 1931. Herbert married Frances Mabel UNDERWOOD at Holy Trinity Church, Leicester on 24 September 1931. Frances had been born 13 July 1910 at Hunderstone, Leicester to Edwin James UNDERWOOD and Elizabeth Frances (LINLEY). Their address in 1931 was Norman Lodge, Avenue Rd, Leicester. On 3 December 1931 Herbert and Frances departed Southampton on the "Ussukuma" (German East Africa Line) for Mombassa, Kenya. Herbert was to open a new mission station in Africa. They remained in Africa for over 4 years, returning from Mombassa to Southhampton on 30 March 1936. They now had two daughters - Ruth Margaret (1933) and Elizabeth Ann (1935).
Herbert and Frances are not in the 1939 register, nor are the two daughters - so we can assume they had returned to Africa by this date. Certainly they did return at some point as there is a shipping record for their return to Britain in late 1945. I doubt they travelled to Africa either during the war or immediately after its conclusion in May 1945. They arrived at Plymouth on 16 November 1945 onboard the "City of Chester". Their previous address had been Urundi, Belgian Congo (now Burundi). They now had three more children - Rosalind (1937), David (1939) and Philippa (1942). These children are not in the UK birth records so we can presume they were born in Urundi.
On their return to Britain in 1945 we presume the family initially returned to Frances's mother at Norman Lodge, Leicester. Soon after their return Herbert was appointed vicar of St Bartholomews, Layston with Buntingford in Hertfordshire. The appointment was reported in the Herts and Essex Observer, 12 October 1946. Buntingford is a small village and the church had a chequered history. The church did not thrive and it was closed in about 1954 and left to decay. It was sold in 2007 and has now been restored as a private home.
We do not know what Herbert and Frances did after the Layston Church closed in 1954. Presumably Herbert found another parish. We do know Herbert Spencer JACKSON died on 10 December 1970 in Poplar, London. Frances later moved to Devon. Frances Mabel died at 4 Gravel Walk, Cullompton, Devon on 11 August 1983, aged 73.
Donald Richard Patrick JACKSON (1900-1985)Donald was born on 3 April 1900 in Bermonsdsey, London to Edwin James and Alice Maud JACKSON. He was recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with the family at Jamaica Rd, London. Donald married Edith PENFOLD at St Anne Church Bermondsey on 28 July 1922. The marriage was witnessed by Donald's brother Herbert. Edith had been born 7 December 1898 to David and Lilian Daisy PENFOLD and was baptised on 5 April 1899 at St John Horsleydown, Tooley St, Bermondsey, London. David was a teablender. This church was built in 1727-1733 but was severely damaged by a bomb on 20 September 1940. It has been demolished and the London City Mission now stands on its site.
Donald and Edith appear to have had only one child - Gloria, born late 1935 in Lewisham. In 1939 the three were living at 5 Winsford Rd, Catford, Lewisham, London. Donald was a involved with the design and building of aeroplanes. In 1950 the family were recorded returning from South Africa. There is little more available about Donald and Edith until Edith JACKSON died in 1979. Donald died on 2 June 1985 at 28 Upwood Rd, Lewisham.
