Charles Edward Lucas was born 23 June 1853 at Empingham. In the 1861 census he was living with his family in Empingham. 1867 he was apprenticed to Mr George TEBBS, a draper at Leicester, but in 1869 TEBBS bought a larger drapery store in Surrey so by 1871, aged 17, Charles was at Kingston on Thames in Surrey.

Marriage to Catherine BYATT

In late 1875 he married Catherine BYATT, a widow, born 1840 in Derby. Catherine had married John ROE in Derby in 1863 and they had three children - Watkin Lewis (1866), Thomas William (1869) and Florence (1873). These three children were living with Charles and Catherine in 1881. Charles was an assurance and coal agent living at 11 Vale St, Litchurch, Derby:

Becoming a Mormon and Emigrating to Utah

In 1881 Charles joined the Mormon Church in Derby and after a brief term as president of the Derby Branch, Charles and Catherine, with their daughters Florence and Mary, sailed from Liverpool to New York, arriving on 01 April 1884 onboard the "Nevada". They travelled on to Ogden, Utah where they were met by Charles' cousin Arnold GOODLIFFE of Snowville, Box Elder. Charles obtained a job as a school teacher until 1889 when the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and became naturalised citizens. Charles returned to his drapery occupation.

Colorised carte-de-visite of Charles and Catherine JACKSON apparently with Catherine's daughter Florence (back row) and two children the family fostered after arrival in Utah.

Catherine's daughter from her first marriage, Florence ROE died in Utah (probably Snowville) on 19 December 1887. Her mother Catherine JACKSON died in Salt Lake City on 16 May 1895 of gastritus and was interred in the local cemetery. The cemetery records suggest her grave is adjacent to her husband Charles who died in 1922, but there is no headstone. However there is a headstone elsewhere in the cemetery that records Catherine ROE, her daughter Florence and her sons Watkin Lewis and Thomas William ROE.

Marriage to Rachel Ann BAXTER

After Catherine's death, Charles then married Rachel Ann BAXTER on 14 August 1895. By the time of the 1900 census they had two children but the two daughters that emigrated from Britain were no longer living with Charles.

Rachel died suddenly on 18 March 1907, 10 days after giving birth to daughter Winnifred.

Marriage to Alice BAXTER

With a young family to look after, Rachel's older sister Alice took over as housekeeper but it was not long before she married Charles on 8 August 1907.

On 5 February 1915 Charles' third wife Alice Baxter JACKSON died.

Marriage to Jantine DeJong

Charles again married on 26 September 1917 to Jantine Reyien DeJong, who had immigrated from Holland in 1899.

Before he died Charles wrote an autobiography, not unlike that of his uncle Arnold GOODLIFFE. Also, his daughter with Rachel Baxter wrote a short autobiography as well. Both can be downloaded and read in PDF format here.(The original can be found at here at familysearch.org)
