Mary Martha JACKSON (1855-1942)

Mary Martha JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham in 1855. In 1861 she was living in Empingham and in 1871 she was at school in Louth, Lincolnshire, boarding with Ann Atkin and her daughter Margaret, the schoolmistress.

Mary Martha married Joseph John COOLER at Old St Pancras on 29 December 1874. Mary was a minor aged 19. The witnesses were her mother Mary Ellen and her brother Charles Lucas. Joseph was a commercial clerk and later a confidential clerk, but when his daughter married in 1909 Joseph was shown as a Baptist Minister.

Joseph John COOLER died on 2 June 1896 at 25 Montpelier Rd, Camberwell. Probate was granted to his widow Mary Martha.


Joseph COOLER died 2 June 1896.

25 Montpelier Rd, Camberwell (black door). After 1911 Mary's sister and husband (Carrie & Ebenezer JENNINGS also lived here).

After Joseph died, Mary remained at 25 Montpelier Rd. in 1901 she had her four daughters with her, three being music teachers. In 1911 she still had her oldest daughter Martha, but also her mother Mary Ellen living with her. In the 1939 register Mary and Martha are still at 25 Montpelier Rd.

Soon after the 1939 register Mary Martha moved to the Home for Old Ladies, Queen's Rd, Croydon where she died 13 June 1942.

Martha COOLER (1875-1943)

Martha was born in Camberwell on 2 November 1875. She lived with her mother all of her life until her mother died in 1942 at the Old ladies Home. Martha died in late 1943, probably at 25 Montpelier Rd.

Margaret Annie COOLER (1879-1879)

Margaret was born at Camberwell in early 1879 and died shortly after.

Ellen Edith COOLER (1880-1963)

Ellen was born at Camberwell on 19 January 1880. She married Samuel Vaughan Trevellyan HOPE at Camberwell in 1902. They had three children Elsie Mabel (20 Apr 1903-1981), Thomas Arthur Sydney (1905-1964) and Stanley George (26 Mar 1907-1980). Samuel Vaughan died in Norbury on 12 Dec 1943 and Ellen Edith died in Croydon 7 Nov 1963.

Amy COOLER (1882-1962)

Amy was born in Camberwell on 16 Feb 1882. She lived with her mother until her marriage on 8 April 1909 to George Henry WOODWARD at the Wesleyan Methodist Church, Kitto Rd, Nunshead. They had one child Gladys Amy (17 Mar 1911-17 Mar 1986). Amy died 1962 in Surrey. Her daughter Gladys married Robert Vincent COLLMAN and they had two sons.

Rose Emma COOLER (1884-1944)

Rose was born in Peckham on 6 September 1883 (the birth was registered Dec quarter 1883 but other records have 1884). She lived with the family until at least 1901. In the 1911 census she was a shop assistant living with the Lewis family at Catford, Lewishan. On 25 March 1925 Rose married Thomas Arthur GREEN at St Jude's, Peckham. Rose was aged 41 and Thomas was 40. Thomas was born in Lambeth London in 1885 but had emigrated to Canada in 1911. He was living in Toronto and working as a sign painter. Thomas returned to England to visit family in 1914 but the next we know he has married Rose Emma in 1925. Immediately after the marriage Thomas and Rose sailed off to Canada, arriving in Quebec on 26 April 1925. Rose and Thomas did not have any children. Rose Emma died in Toronto on 18 June 1944.

Annie Grace COOLER (1885-1890)

Annie was born in Camberwell in 1885. She died in October 1890 and was buried at the Camberwell Old Cemetery on 22 October 1890 in plot 94/11868. She was later joined by her parents and three siblings.

Gertrude Mary COOLER (1886-1890)

Gertrude was born in 1886 in Camberwell. She died in October 1890 and was buried on 12 November 1890 with her sister at Camberwell Old Cemetery.

Luther Joseph COOLER (1887-1959)

Luther was born 22 August 1887 in Camberwell. He was a clerk in the civil service. he lived wih his mother until his marriage in 1927 to Ada Charlotte ROTTACKER. Ada was born in Camberwell on 10 September 1896 to Max and Clara ROTTACKER. Max was a watchmaker, born in Germany in 1880. Luther and Ada did not have any children. In the 1939 register Luther is alone in Blackpool but Ada is not obvious in the record. Ada died on 21 September 1943 at Mt Vernon Hospital, Northwood, near Watford and was buried at Harrow Cemetery London. According to the probate record she had been living at 204 London Rd, South Lowestoft at the time.

Within a year of Ada's death Luther married Sybil Garland SCHOLES in Blackpool in 1944. Sybil had been born 22 Feb 1901 in Birkenhead, Cheshire to Garland SCHOLES and Hilda. She became a nurse, first registered on 18 March 1927. In 1939 she was living at 10 Saughall Rd, Chester, Cheshire.

Luther Joseph COOLER died on 28 Mat 1959 at the General Hospital, Weston-super-Mare. He was buried at Camberwell with his parents and sisers. His second wife Sybil died in 1982 at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.

Mabel Agnes COOLER (1890-1890)

Mabel was born at Camberwell in early 1890 to Joseph and Mary COOLER. She died shortly after birth.
