The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandCarrie Ellen JACKSON - daughter of Mary Ellen Goodliffe and Richard Jackson
Carrie Ellen JACKSON (1860-1940)Carrie Ellen JACKSON was born to Richard and Mary Ellen in Empingham on 29 December 1860. She was recorded with the family in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses. Carrie Ellen married Ebenezer James JENNINGS, a civil servant, in West Ham in mid-1881. Ebenezer at various times was with the Colonial Office and later with Customs. Carrie and Ebenezer apparently had five children (according to the 1911 census all were alive at that time) but only 4 are listed in the census records. The fifth was Winifred Grace born early 1882 in London.
The family moved houses frequently but also spent some time in India. In November 1896 the three younger boys were admitted to Fircroft Rd School Wandsworth, London. Some time after 1911 Ebenezer and Carrie moved to 25 Montpellier Rd, Peckham to live with Carrie's widowed sister Mary Martha COOLING. Ebenezer died here on 18 November 1921 and was buried at the Old Cemetery, Camberwell. His estate was valued at £451. By 1939 Carrie had moved to 2 Victoria Jubilee Homes in the small village of Lower Langford, east of Weston super Mare. These alm houses were built in 1887 for people in need. Carrie Ellen JENNINGS died there on 25 February 194, her estate worth £126.
The children of Ebenezer and Carrie Ellen JENNINGS:Winifred Grace JENNINGS (1882-1966)Winifred Grace JENNINGS was born 31 January 1882 at Holborn, London. By 1891 she was boarding at a school at 80 Lewisham High St. By 1901 she was working as a governess for the COLLOT family at 7 Park Rd, Willesden, London. Winifred is not obvious in the 1911 census, but the nurse working for the THOMPSON family at Prittlewell, South-End-on-Sea is likely her.
The next we know of Winifred is her marriage to Arthur Herbert GOODLIFFE, her second cousin once removed. They married in 1928 at the New Forest, Hampshire. Winifred was aged 48 and Arthur (by now a widow) was 58. Arthur was a teacher. By 1939 he had retired and they were living at "Windgarth", Tydhams Lane, Newbury, Berkshire. Arthur Herbert died at Windgarth on 16 January 1952. Probate was granted to his wife Winifred. Winifred died on 25 May 1966, at The Hilary Hotel, St Johns Rd, Newbury.
Sydney James JENNINGS (1882-1937)Sydney James JENNINGS was born 27 December 1882 at Holborn, London (11 months after his sister Winifred). He was baptised at Upper Norwood All Saints on 12 October 1891. In 1891 he was a scholar at Christ's Hospital, Hertford, a public school dedicated to pupils from poorer families. By 1901 Sydney was back with the family at 34 Wandle Rd, working as an insurance clerk.
After 1901 Sydney becomes difficult to trace as there are several Sidney James Jennings of similar age. In the 1911 census there is a Sydney working as an insurance agent:
Sydney James JENNINGS married Edith Alice BUTLER in late 1924 at Wokingham. Edith had been born 7 July 1885 to William BUTLER and Millicent Kate HODGKINSON and baptised 4 October 1885 at Norwood St John.
In 1901 Edith was a dressmaking apprentice at Penge, Surrey and in 1911 she was a dressmaker, as were her four sisters. At the time of marriage Sydney was aged 42 and Edith was 39. They appear not to have had any children. Around 1926 Sydney and Edith moved to Fawley, Southhampton where Sydney had obtained work for the AGWI (Atlantic, Gulf and West Indies) Petroleum Company, taken over in 1926 by Anglo-American Oil, an affiliate of Esso. Sydney and Edith are recorded in the electoral rolls for 1927 to 1931 at "The Village", Fawley. Sydney James JENNINGS died at Fawley on 25 April 1937 and was buried in the local churchyard at Fawley All Saints. His death was noted in the local Hampshire Advertiser on 1 May 1937. The chief mourners make useful reading. Apart from Mrs Jennings (widow), the Mr & Mrs A. GOODLIFFE were Sydney's sister Winifred Grace who had married her second cousin once removed, Arthur Herbert GOODLIFFE. The Mrs RUDD was Edith's sister Minnie who had married William RUDD in 1921. The GOODLIFFE connection confirms this is the correct Sydney Jennings.
By 1939 Edith had moved to "Hawthorne Dene" Church Lane Fawley. This is the correct person as the date of birth is 7 July (compare to Edith's baptism record above (but note the year should be 1885)
Edith Alice JENNINGS/BUTLER died 19 February 1963 at Knowle Hospital, Wickham Hospital, Surrey. Probate was granted to her sister Minnie RUDD.
Percy Wills JENNINGS (1885-1951)Percy Wills was born 20 August 1885 in Walthamstow, London to Ebenezer and Carrie JENNINGS. He was recorded with the family in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Percy obtained a job with a bicycle manufacturer but this ended abruptly in February 1901, according to the local newspapers. In the 1911 census his occupation was "electrical engineer for cycle maker".
Heeding the magistrate's warning, and probably also succumbing to pressure from his father, Percy soon thereafter enlisted in the Army, joining the 21st (Empress of India's) Lancers. He was soon posted to Dublin, Ireland and later back to the regiment's base at Aldershot. In Dublin Percy had met a local girl and he returned to Ireland to marry Agnes Craig COCHRANE on 3 August 1907. Agnes had been born 30 August 1881 at Newry, Armagh.
In 1911 the regiment spent some time at Abbassia Barracks, Cairo Egypt. In the 1911 census Percy was now a sergeant, accompanied by his wife and young son Percy Seymour.
Following the outbreak of war in 1914 the 21st Lancers sat out the war in India. Percy's daughter Moyra Avil May was born there. Of interest, she was baptised at the remote village of Murree, a resort town now close to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Her father Percy was baptised at the same time.
After the war the 21st Lancers returned to Britain and were disestablished in 1922. Before that, Percy had been dismissed for medical reasons (arthritis) on 16 September 1920. His home address at the time was 22 Albion Place, Ramsgate.
Percy and Agnes had three children: Percy Seymour (registered Canterbury Jun 1909), Moyra Seymour (born 15 May 1915 at Changla Gali, near Muree, now Pakistan) and Sheila Francis (born Sep 1920 registered Thanet, Kent). The UK birth registers also have Ronald A. (born 1925) with Surname JENNINGS and mother's maiden name COCHRANE, but there was a JENNINGS-COCHRANE marriage in 1923 that would explain Ronald. Percy left the Army on 16 September 1920. On 22 September 1920 Percy, Agnes and their 3 children sailed from London on the ship GOORHA bound for a new life in Cape Town, South Africa. Percy was registered as "Captain PW JENNINGS" and his occupation was "farmer". Both Percy and his son Percy Seymour made return visits to Britain:
Agnes Craig JENNINGS died at Geelmary, Arundel Rd, Rondebosch, South Africa on 10 July 1950 and was cremated at the Maitland Crematorium. Percy Wills JENNINGS died on 1 February 1951 at the same address.
Their son Percy Seymour JENNINGS was born 25 April 1909 in Canterbury, England. He married Lorna May FLEMING-ORR in Cape Town. They appear to have had two children - a girl who died at 6 hours and a daughter Gillian. Lorna died 12 October 1989 and Percy died 5 June 1995. Both are commemorated at Maitland Crematorium.
Their daughter Moyra Avril May JENNINGS was born in India on 15 May 1915. She married William Hatcher PRICE on 1 February 1941 at St Thomas Anglican Church, Rondebosch. Moyra was in the Womens Auxiliary Air Force at the time. William Hatcher PRICE was born in Bedford, UK on 27 July 1909 to William PRICE and Ada Georgina HATCHER. He was an airman at the 45 Air School, RAF Oudtshoorn at the time of marriage.
Moyra and William were later divorced. William returned to the UK where he died in Bedford in 1972. Moyra married Kenneth Roy TITE on 19 June 1954. Moyra TITE died in Cape Town on 10 June 1968.
Their younger daughter Sheila Francis JENNINGS was born in England in 1920 a few weeks before the family sailed for Cape Town. She married Mr Fountain prior to 1950. Bernard Jackson JENNINGS (1887-1917)Bernard Jackson (named after his mother's family) was born in 1887 to Ebenezer and Carrie JENNINGS. He was recorded with the family in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. Some time between 1901 and 1911 Bernard sailed out to Sydney NSW, Australia. He became a motor driver. According to the family, Bernard enlisted at Liverpool (NSW) in the Australian Infantry Force on 18 May 1915 as soon as he had heard the news about the sinking of the Lusitania (7 May 1915). He was posted to A Company of the 19th Battalion. Later he was transferred to the 17th ANZAC Light Railway Operating Company. On 20 October 1917 Bernard was seriously wounded with a gun shot wound to the thigh and a fracture to the base of the skull. He was taken to the 10th Casualty Clearing Station and died of his wounds on 20 October 1917. He is buried at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, West of Ieper, Belgium. Alec Edward JENNINGS (1887-1917)Alec Edward (Alec was his registered name) was born at Walthamstow in 1889 to Ebenezer and Carrie JENNINGS. He was recorded with the family in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. He was at school with his brothers in 1896. Alec married Constance Lucy LUTHAM at Christ Church, Mitcham, Surrey on 10 September 1910. In 1911 they were living at 13 Otterburn St, Wandsworth, London. Alex was a law clerk.
Alec served in the Army in the 15th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (No. 115794) and was awarded the Victory Medal. In 1931 Alec make a visit to Batavia (Jakarta). His home address at the time was 1 Anglesea Rd, Kingston-on-Thames.
Alec and Constance did not have any children. In the 1932 to 1937 electoral rolls their voting address was 3 Pountney Hill, London but their residential address was 31 Buckingham Gate, London. By 1939 their residential address was 9 Oakfield Court, Kings Ave London, but in the 1939 register they appear to have separated. Constance was living at Spinnyview Rise, 62 Bousley Rd, near Ottershaw, Chertsey. Alec was living with Sidney Victor REDMAN at 59 The Woodlands, Croydon.
In 1945 through to 1962 Constance was still living at Bousley Road. She died in September 1977 in Worthing. In 1945 to 1951 Alec was enrolled as a voter at 3 Laurence Pountney Hill, London.
It is doubtful that he lived at Pountney Hill, rather it was his law practice. In fact by 1945 he had moved to 23 Beacon Way, Carshalton and was living with Olive Isabella Catherine JENNINGS. So who was Olive? I cannot find a marriage for Alec and Olive, but they may have married orverseas (or not). Certainly Alec's wife Constance was still alive and they may have divorced (she died in 1977). Olive was born 1 August 1896 at Kingston on Thames to Bonham Carter EVELEGH and Octavia FLIGHT. Olive became a teacher. Alec and Olive lived at 23 Beacon Way, Carshalton until Alec died at that address on 27 November 1966.
