The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandSarah Goodliffe CULPIN - Third daughter of Ann GOODLIFFE and John CULPIN
Sarah Goodliffe CULPIN was born 31 October 1829 at Kings Cliffe. She was the 3rd daughter of John and Anna CULPIN.
In the 1841 census Sarah was aged about 12 and was living with her uncle Arnold Goodliffe at Bridlesmith Gate, Nottingham, just as Arnold had noted in his memoirs. In 1851 she was working as a servant for Elizabeth BRETLAND at 17 Carlton St, Nottingham.
Sarah married Edward EDGSON in late 1853, the event recorded at Oundle. Edward was a tailor and draper, born in Uppingham to William and Bethiah EDGSON. He was baptised at Uppingham on 8 May 1829. In the 1851 census Edward was visiting a family in High St, Uppingham. Nearby lived some of Sarah's future MOULD relations, the family her sister Anna would soon marry into.
Sarah and Edward had 9 children:
In the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses Edward and Sarah were living at Park St, Kings Cliffe. Edward was a tailor, draper and grocer.
On 12 June 1898 Sarah Goodliffe EDGSON (née CULPIN) died at Kings Cliffe. She was buried in the churchyard at All Saints, Kings Cliffe. There is a headstone:
Edward remained the tailor at Kings Cliffe. In the 1901 census he had sons Henry, Frederick and Frederick's new wife Bertha (HAGGER) with him. By 1911 Edward had retired and now lived with son John Thomas who was the draper and grocer at Morcott, while Frederick remained at Park St, Kings Cliffe to continue as the draper and grocer there. Edward EDGSON died on 31 March 1916. He is buried in the churchyard at All Saints, Kings Cliffe with his wife Sarah. He appears to have been named after his great uncle, Arnold GOODLIFFE, the provision merchant in Nottingham. Arnold was recorded in the 1871 and 1881 census with his family at King's Cliffe. In 1891 Arnold had joined the family profession as a draper and was working in London as a draper's warehouseman at 12 Warwick Square, Christchurch, london City. Warwick Square has a row of massive apartment buildings, which in 1891 housed dozens of drapery workers.
In 1908 Arnold departed London for a new life in Canada. He was aged 40 and unmarried. He departed from Liverpool and arrived at St John, New Brunswick, Canada on 12 March 1908. Arnold went on to Toronto where in 1916 he was living at 16 Roblock Ave. His occupation was clerk for Eaton & Co, Toronto. On 25 January 1916 Arnold EDGSON enlisted in the Canadian Army. He gave his age as 44 years 3 months (birth on 19 October 1871) but in fact he was 49 years 3 months so would probably have been rejected. He joined the 169th Operational Support Battalion, later renamed 109th Regiment and later the 5th Reserve Battalion. He was sent to England on 25 October 1916 onboard the SS CORSICAN. He remained in England for the duration of the war. He was promoted to Corporal on 11 July 1917. He was attached to CORD - Central Ontario Regimental Depot, "a facility in England used to assemble men and to store and administer equipment and materials". On 5 February 1919 Arnold was admitted to the 12 Canadian General Hospital at Bramshott Camp. He died there on 12 February from Influenza (the "Spanish Flu" epidemic that killed thousands throughout the world in 1918-1920). His military file extends to over 60 pages and includes his Wills (he made two of them, the first to his cousin in Australia), his full medical file and leave passes to visit his family in Peterborough, King's Cliffe and Morcott. Arnold Goodliffe EDGSON was buried in the All Saints churchyard at King's Cliffe with other members of his family. He is also commemorated on a plaque inside the church, and in canada on the Sons of England memorial on the corner of Elm and Univeristy Avenue Toronto and on a bronze plaque inside the Eaton Centre, Toronto.
Annie Bithiah EDGSON 1867-1919Annie Bithiah EDGSON was born 1869 at Kings Cliffe. She was recorded in the 1871 and 1881 census with her family at King's Cliffe. In 1891 she was with her brother John Thomas at Morcott.
Annie Bithiah died at park St, King's Cliffe on 8 September 1897. She is buried with the family at All Saint's, King's Cliffe. The church burial record shows the authority was upon certificate of Edward EDGSON (Annie's father). This indicates the funeral service was held elsewhere (probably the Baptist Chapel) and not at All Saints Church.
