Mary CULPIN was born on 4 February 1832 at Park St, King's Cliffe. Her birth was recorded at the Morcott and Barrowden Baptist Chapel.
In the 1841 and 1851 censuses Mary and her family were living at Park St, King's Cliffe where John was a grocer.
Mary married John STANYON (a carpenter and wheelwright) at King's Cliffe on 31 July 1856. John had been born in King's Cliffe on 3 November 1823 to John and Mary STANYON and was baptised at the Wesleyan Barn Hill Chapel, Stamford on 10 December 1823.
In 1851 John was living with his parents at the Golden Ball Inn, 2 Bridge St, King's Cliffe. John Snr had been a blacksmith in King's Cliffe but had retired and his son William had taken over the business. In 1851 John was aged 67 and Mary was 63. According to trade directories John STANYON Snr was the innkeeper between about 1847 and 1854). In the mid-20th century, the Golden Ball was de-licenced and turned into a dwelling. It had been built in the mid 17th century as two cottages.
After marriage, John and Mary moved to Tansor, a small village north-east of Oundle, where John was a wheelwright. Some time between 1862 and 1864 the family moved to Ketton. John and Mary had 9 children:
In the census records, John and Mary were living at Tansor in 1861. By 1871 they had moved to The Green, Ketton.
John STANYON died on 26 January 1906 at Ketton, aged 82. A few months later, on 17 December 1906 Mary (née CULPIN) died at Ketton. The Children of John STANYON and Mary CULPINWilliam STANYON 1857-1877William was born on 25 April 1857 at Tansor. He was recorded in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with the family. William died at Ketton on 14 October 1877, aged 20 and is buried in the churchyard of Ketton St Mary.
John STANYON 1859-1910John STANYON was the second son of John and Mary, born 17 Dec 1858 at Tansor. He was recorded with the family in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. By 1881 John was a boarder at 24 Sidney St, Little Gonerby, Grantham, Lincolnshire, where he was a grocer's assistant.
John remained in Grantham. By 1891 he had become the grocery manager. John married Annie HARRISON in the Baptist Chapel Broad St, Nottingham on 4 December 1884.
John and Annie had 2 children:
John and family were in 3 North St, Grantham in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
Their daughter Jessie Helena STANYON died on 5 April 1905 in Grantham aged 15. The cause of death is not known, but must have been quite sudden. Jessie was an accomplished pianist, have passed Grade IV with honours the previous year. John STANYON died in Nottingham on 2 September 1910, at 13 Hartley Rd, Radford, Nottingham. It appears that John was just visiting, as John was buried at Grantham Cemetery on 7 September 1910.
Annie did not stay in Grantham. She and her daughter Florence moved to Nottingham. In 1911 they was working as servants for Henry GOWER, a surveyer in Nottingham, residing near Vale St, Mansfield Woodhouse. Some time after this Annie and Florence moved to Moulton, Spalding, Lincolnshire where Florence was working in the local Post Office.
Annie STANYON (née HARRISON) died at Moulton, Spalding in late 1941. After her death, her daughter Florence returned to Ketton, where she died on 25 January 1973 at 19 Barrowden Rd. The two daughters of John and Annie STANYON - Florence and Jessie - never married. Charles STANYON 1860-1953Charles STANYON was born 2 October 1860 at Tansor. He was recorded in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses at Tansor with the family. Charles followed his father to become a wheelwright. On 1 October 1890 Charles married Francis (Fanny) Lambourn(e) BIZZELL. There is more about Charles STANYON and his family here.Mary STANYON 1864-1931Mary STANYON was born 1864 at Ketton. She was recorded in the 1871 and 1881 censuses at Ketton with the family. In 1891 Mary was living with her brother John and his family at 3 North St, Manthorpe, Lincolnshire. By 1901 she was back with her parents at Ketton. In 1911 Mary was living with Constance Kate MOULD (her cousin once removed) at 9 Albert Grove, Nottingham.
Mary STANYON died at the Imfirmary, Stamford on 30 May 1931 aged 67. She had been living in Nassington.
Robert STANYON 1866-1945Robert STANYON was born 19 November 1866 at Ketton. He was recorded in the 1871 census at Ketton with the family. In 1881 he was working as an ironmonger's clerk at Chertsey, Surrey. By 1891 he had moved to Lexden, Colchester, Essex.
Robert STANYON married Eveline Mary WAGSTAFF at Colchester in 1897. They had three children:
In 1901 Robert, Eveline and their two young sons were living at Creffield Rd, Colchester. Robert was now an ironmonger's assistant. In 1911 they were at 174 Maldon Rd, Colchester, where they remained. Robert was now the Manager of the Implement Department of an agricultural dealer. By 1939 however, he had retired as the "Director of Agricultural Implements".
Robert STANYON died at 174 Maldon Rd Colchester on 12 January 1945. His wife Eveline Mary (née WAGSTAFF) died at the same address on 26 May 1953. The children of Robert and Eveline:
Alan STANYON 1899-1918: Alan was born 14 July 1899 at Colchester. He enlisted in the Army on 9 March 1915 and served in France. He was killed at the Somme on 8 August 1918 and is buried at the Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette, Picardie, France.
Dorothy Evelyn STANYON 1900-1991:Dorothy Evelyn was born in Colchester on 13 December 1900. Dorothy became a teacher and did not marry. In 1939 she was living with her father.Dorothy died on 4 January 1991 at 71 London Rd, Lexden, Colchester. Richard STANYON 1868-1913Richard STANYON was born 11 Oct 1868 at Ketton. He was recorded in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses at Ketton with the family. Richard married Ethel LAWSON on 25 October 1900 at Leadenham St Swithins, Lincoln. In 1901 Richard and Ethel were living at Church Cottage, Ketton. Richard was a carpenter and joiner. In 1911 they were still in Ketton.
Richard and Ethel had three children:
Richard STANYON died at Ketton on 4 March 1913, aged 45.
After Richard's death, Ethel moved to Lincoln, where, in 1939 she was living at 84 Holly St, Brant Rd, Lincoln.
Ethel STANYON (née LAWSON) died at St Georges Hospital, Lincoln on 1 January 1969. She had been living at 17 Dryden Ave, Lincoln. She was buried at Newport Cemetery, lincoln plot W285. There is a small memorial.
The Children of Richard and Ethel: Phyllis Mary 1901-1909: Phyllis was born 11 November 1901 in Ketton. She died at 8 years old in 1909. Oswald STANYON 1902-1982: was born 10 December 1902 at Ketton. He was recorded in the 1911 census with his parents Richard and Ethel. Oswald became a fitter and machinist. He married Elizabeth Ann COULING at Lincoln in 1927. They did not have any children. On 19 September 1921 Oswald enlisted in the Army, joining the Coldstream Guards. His term finished in 1931 and it appears he re-enlisted for another 2 years, leaving on 18 September 1933.
After retiring from the Army, Oswald returned to Lincoln where he continued in the trade of machinist. In 1939 he and Elizabeth were living at 31 Russell St, Lincoln. They had her nephew Ted living with them. Ted was born 26 June 1917 in Lincoln. The birth index shows no mother's maiden name, suggesting Ted was the son of Lilly COULING, Elizabeth's sister.
Oswald died at Lincoln on 27 August 1982 and was buried at Lincoln Cemetery in 1 September 1982. Elizabeth remained in Lincoln and died at Burton Cliffe House Nursing Home on 11 April 1994. She was cremated at Lincln Crematorium on 18 April 1994. As Elizabeth did not have any children, her funeral was arranged by her nephew Ted COULING.
John Sydney STANYON 1908-1983: John Sydney was born 1 October 1908 at Ketton. He is in the 1911 census with his parents Richard and Ethel. John Sydney became a building contractor in Lincoln. He advertised widely in the local papers for contracts to build new houses.
But the advertising was not enough. in late 1935 his creditors filed for bankrupcy and John's business was placed under a court-appointed trustee. In early 1936 the case came to court:
But all was not lost. John found work as the site foreman on a big construction project, and in 1937 was rewarded on completion.
As the news report noted, John married Ethel TRUSWELL in Lincoln in late 1937; John was aged 29 and Ethel was 46. Ethel had been born in Nottingham on 5 November 1891 to William TRUSWELL and Elizabeth (DALLEY). In 1939 they were living at 31 Patricia Ave, Sedgley Staffordshire; John's occupation was "Builders Foreman". Although Ethel's name was written as Edith, it was subsequently corrected (in 1958) to Ethel.
John and Ethel did not have any children. Ethel died at 2 Belmont St, Lincoln on 28 June 197, aged 85. She was cremated on 1 July 1977 at Lincoln Crematorium. John died a few years later on 14 June 1983 at 1 Leighton Cres, Boultham Moor (near where he was building houses in 1935. He was cremated at Lincoln. Note that as John did not have any family, his cremation was arranged by Ted COULING, the same person who arranged the burial of John's sister-in-law Elizabeth Ann STANYON (COULING).
