The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandCharles - third son of John STANYON and Mary CULPIN
Charles STANYON 1860-1953: Charles was born 2 October 1860 at Tansor. He was recorded in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses at Tansor with the family. Charles followed his father to become a wheelwright. In 1890 Charles married Fanny Lambourn BIZZELL at Reading, Berkshire.
In the 1891 census Charles and Fanny were living at High St Ketton, where Charles was a carpenter and grocer.
Charles and Fanny had 7 children:
In the census records, Charles and Fanny remained at High St, Ketton.
Fanny Lambourn STANYON (née BIZZELL) died on 31 December 1935 at Ketton, aged 73. Charles remained at High St and was recorded there in 1939 with his daughter Ettie and his three grandchildren (from his son Charles Robert) - Barbara, Ruth and Robert.
Charles STANYON died at Ketton on 31 January 1953, aged 92. He had outlived his wife Fanny by exactly 18 years and 1 month. The Children of Charles STANYON and Fanny Lambourn BIZZELLAlfred John STANYON 1891-1936Alfred was born 30 July 1891 at Ketton. He was recorded in the 1901 census with the family. By 1911 he was working as a clerk for George PLUMMER at Shortlands, Kent.
Alfred John married Marjorie Jane ORCHARD in June 1919 (Steyning 2b/933). They did not have any children. But the relationship did not last. As the newspapers reported, Alfred John met Miss Nesta FITZGERALD whilst they were on a trip to Italy. Marjorie left Alfred and he went to live with Nesta. Alfred and Marjorie were divorced on 27 February 1928. Alfred then married Nesta FITZGERALD in early 1929.
It would appear that Alfred and Nesta had one child - Dorothea M STANYON, born December 1927 at Tonbridge (2a/1250). Dorothea married Ludwig Herman BRANDES in 1850 and they had 2 children. Sadly, Alfred John STANYON died on 6 August 1936 at 141 Durham Rd, Wimbledon. Nesta survived him by nearly 40 years. She died in February 1976 at Hendon. Lottie STANYON 1891-1936Lottie STANYON was born 1892 at Ketton. She was recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with the family. Lottie then enroled at London University, where she graduated with a BA degree in 1914.
After graduation in 1914 it appears Lottie became a teacher. But soon after the war she decided to travel to India in 1919. A note in the Ketton village records tells us she spent the next 6 years in northern India before returning home. "1927 - Returning to the mission field: Miss Lottie Stanyon, daughter of Mr and Mrs C Stanyon, who has been home over a year after six years' missionary labours in Northern India, is now going out to Southern India, and was to leave England yesterday on the steamer "Rawal Pindi" from Tilbury Docks. There was a farewell gathering in the Congregational Chapel on Tuesday."
Lottie travelled to and from India several times on the P&O ship the Rawalpindi".
The next report about Lottie is a note in the Chronicle of the London Missionary Society, November 1927: "Miss Lottie Stanyon, B.A., of Ketton Church, Rutland was a missionary enthusiast when she came to Lincoln, and always keenly interested in Study Circle and other missionary work, and it only needed the zeal of such a minister to convince her that her real sphere of service was the Mission Field. She was accepted by the L.M.S., and in 1919 sailed for Mirzapur in North India, where she worked until the Society handed over the field to another Society. Miss Stanyon is now doing educational work at Salem in Southern India.
At Salem in India, Lottie established a school to train women teachers. Today it is the CSI Teacher Training Insitute for Women and their website tells us "With the aims of producing zealous and dedicated teachers who could mould and form the future generation, Miss.Lottie Stanyon Our founder was a Christian missionary who started a Higher Elementary Teacher Training School in 1926 at Salem. The Higher Elementary Teacher Training School was converted into Basic Teacher Training School in 1964. This was later converted in to Diploma in Teacher Education in 1975. Now it is renamed as Diploma in Elementary Education" Lottie returned to India several times after 1927 but the shipping records have gaps that do not tell us about all of her visits. Her last visit appears to have been in 1950, returning to England in 1952.
On returning to England in 1950 Lottie was 60 years old. There are no further records for her until her death on 10 June 1978 at 4 Chapel Lane, Ketton. This address is adjacent to the Congregational Hall, the church that set Lottie onto her missionary life. The building is Grade 2 listed as an example of Georgian architecture. William STANYON 1895-1956William STANYON was born 29 May 1895 at Ketton. He was recorded in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with the family at Ketton. In 1911 his occupation was carpenter, as was his father Charles. In 1916 Charles was called up for military service. He objected on religious grounds to being a combatant so was enlisted in the NC (non-combatant) Corps. As a result he spent two terms in prison.
After the war William became a Congregational Minister. He spent time in Birmingham and while there attended conferences in Boston in 1928 and Canada in 1929. These were major conferences as the ships on both occasions had many ministers on board. On all occasions they travelled 3rd Class.
In 1939 William was boarding at 22 Shear Brow, Blackburn, a boarding house run by the widow Alice AINSWORTH and family. Today it is a daycare centre.
By 1943 Rev William STANYON was at Blackburn and in 1949 he was chairman of the Blackburn District of the Congregational Church.
It appears that William retired to Ketton. He died there on 5 July 1956 (this date is often quoted but no sources are given).

In the 1957 electoral roll, Olive and daughter Ruth, together with Olive's sister Evelyn (PURDEN) were living at 36 Shirehall Park, Hendon. At a later date Olive moved to Devon as she died there on 27 January 1983\ at the Old School, Cotley Wash, Axminster. Some time after 1950 Ellie's sister Lottie retired from her missionary work in India and moved into 4 Chapel Lane, Ketton. At around this time their brother Herbert moved into 10 Redmiles Lane, Ketton which runs off Chapel Lane. Lottie died at 4 Chapel Lane on 10 June 1978.
