The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandFrederick EDGSON - 7th Son of Sarah Goodliffe CULPIN and Edward EDGSON
Frederick EDGSON 1866-1939Frederick was born in the June quarter 1866 at Kings Cliffe. He was recorded in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses with the family at Kings Cliffe. He became a tailor in the family business. Frederick married Bertha HAGGER in late 1900. Bertha had been born 13 August 1874 at Wimpole, Cambridgeshire to James HAGGER and Betsy Mansley BROWNING. (The 1939 Register gives her birth as 1875 but this is likely to be in error as the birth was registered in the Sep quarter 1874). They had two children, William Edward (1901-1999) and Gladys Annie (1903-17 December 1982). In 1901 Frederick and Bertha were living at Park St, King's Cliffe with Edward EDGSON the widower. By 1911 Frederick had taken over the business and his father had retired, to live with his son John at Morcott. In 1921
Frederick EDGSON died on 19 March 1939 at King's Cliffe. He was buried at the King's Cliffe Cemetery.
In the 1939 register, Bertha was in the Bryn-y-Neuadd Mental Hospital in Llanfairfechan, Caernarvonshire, Wales. This hospital was opened in 1898 in a mansion to care for "lunatics and idiots". In 1939 there were 81 female and 26 male inmates, 24 female and 11 male nurses and 15 other staff. The mansion was demolished in 1971 and a new hospital built.
Bertha EDGSON died on 29 November 1947, at St Andrews Hospital, Northampton, late from Prestbury, Cheshire. She was buried with her husband at King's Cliffe.
The Children of Frederick EDGSON and Bertha (HAGGER)William Edward EDGSONWilliam Edward was born 24 May 1901 at Park St, King's Cliffe. He is recorded with his parents, Frederick and Bertha, in the 1911 census and the 1924 electoral roll. Gladys Annie EDGSONGladys Annie was born 4 April 1903 at Park St, King's Cliffe. She is recorded with her brother William and their parents, Frederick and Bertha, in the 1911 census. From birth, William and Gladys appear to have lived together all of their lives. By 1939, William and Gladys were living at "Haylea", Heybridge Lane, Prestbury, a suburb of Macclesfield. William was the manager of a gown factory. Gladys was at home but was recorded as being in the Red Cross.
At some date after 1939, William and Gladys' mother was released from the Bryn-y-Neuadd Hospital in Wales and went to live with them at "Haylea". She was residing there in 1947 when she died in hospital. After 1947 William and Gladys moved to the small village of Holbeach in Lincolnshire, where they lived at "Birkhill", Fleet Rd. Gladys Annie died at Birkhill on 15 December 1982 (15 December according to probate, but 17 Dec according to her headstone). She is recorded on the family headstone at King's Cliffe. (I guess her brother William arranged for the inscription.) William Edward died at Birkhill on 12 September 1988. As he was he last of the family, there were no close relatives remaining to add his name to the family headstone.
