Frances Helen was born Jun 1892, the birth registered at Barrow-upon-Soar. Frances' father was George JACKSON but the family cannot be found in the census records with certainty. In 1929 and 1933 electoral rolls they were living at 6 Shalimar Gardens, Acton, London. Francis was a technical engineer. In 1938 Francis and Helen travelled to New York, departing from Southampton on 27 July. There does not appear to be a return shipping record, but they did return as Frances Helen died on 25 October 1974 and Francis John Stafford died on 20 May 1975, both at 83 Pentire Ave, Newquay, Cornwall.

1974/75 probate for Frances and Francis CULPIN.

Fanny Mary CULPIN 1865-1924

Fanny Mary CULPIN was born 1865 at Collingham (or Great Easton, Leicestershire, depending on the census records). She was recorded in the 1871 and 1881 censuses with her family at Great Easton, Leicestershire. In 1891 she was playing chaperone to her brother John, who was living at New St, Rothwell with his future wife Lucy STAFFORD.

1891 census: New Street, Rothwell.

Fanny married Frederick George FRANKLAND in 1898, the marriage registered at Uppingham. Frank had been born in Kirkby Malzeard, Yorkshire in 184 and still lived there, being a tailor. In 1877 he had married Mary STURDY and they had two children - Margaret Ann (1879) and Robert (1881). Mary died at Kirky Malzeard in 1897. Quite how Fanny met Frederick is not clear as Kirky Malzeard is a long way from Leicestershire. Frederick was aged 49 and Fanny was 33. They had one child - Arnold Frederick FRANKLAND, born 1902. In both 1901 and 1911 they had Frederick's daughter Margaret living with them.

1901 census: Rothwell

1911 census: Kirkby Malzeard, Yorkshire

Fanny Mary FRANKLAND died at 4 Market Hill Rothwell in July 1924 and was buried on 29 July 1924 at Rothwell Cemetery. The address at Rothwell was that of her niece Florence (CULPIN) and Russell AUSTIN.

1924 burial record for Fanny FRANKLAND

Frederick remained at Kirkby Malzeard, where he died 5 April 1937.

Arnold Frederick FRANKLAND son of Frederick and Fanny. Arnold was born 16 July 1902 at Kirkby Malzeard. Arnold attended Bede College Durham and became a teacher. He taught at Leeds and Rothwell before becoming head at Thwaites School, Appleby in 1928. He married Joan Helen REDHEAD in 1928 (registered Kettering). Joan was born 14 January 1905 at New Street, Oundle to William David REDHEAD and Amy (SWANN). William was a hairdresser. They did not have any children. In 1939 Arnold and Joan were living at Murton, Westmorland where Arnold was the head teacher.

1939: Murton..

Arnold and Joan retired to 6 Swinnate Rd, Arnside, Carnforth, which is on the coast SW of Kendal. Arnold died there on 11 February 1992 and Joan on 5 April 1992.

Lydia Sarah CULPIN 1870-1954

Lydia Sarah (Lily) CULPIN was born 15 August 1870 at Great Easton, Leicestershire. She was recorded in the 1871 and 1881 censuses with her family at Great Easton. In 1891 she was .

Lydia married Harry John CHAMBERLAIN in 1890. Harry was born 23 February 1861 at Rothwell to Daniel CHAMBERLAIN and Harriet (TILLEY). Harry became a grocer and ironmonger with his father at 4 market Hill, Rothwell. In 1891 Harry and Lydia (also known as Lily) were living with his brother at Market Hill, by 1901 they had taken over the business.

1891: 4 Market Hill, Rothwell.

1901: 4 Market Hill, Rothwell.

1911: 4 Market Hill, Rothwell.

Harry and Lydia had one child - Doris CHAMBERLAIN (1899-?).

1939: Murton.

It is not certain what happened to Harry and Lydia, but there is a death record for Harry CHAMBERLAIN at Surrey in 1951 and for Lydia in Surrey in 1954. Their daughter Doris vanishes after 1912. There are newspaper items about her winning prizes in 1912 (definitely her as they give her address as 4 Market Hill, Rothwell). There are shipping records for a Lydia CHAMBERLAIN to Canada in 1921 but this is definitely NOT her as her marriage record in Canada gives her mother as Dorothy, as well as other inconsistent facts.

Frank William CULPIN 1872-1941

Frank William CULPIN was born 20 May 1872 at Great Easton, Leicestershire. He was recorded in the 1881 census with his family at Great Easton. Frank is missing from the 1891 census. Frank became a baker and confectioner, with his main business at 120 Stafford Street Walsall (the building has been replaced). His business was described in the 1915 "Walsall and District Illustrated Business Review" thus:

"Mr. F. W. Culpin. 120 Stafford Street, and branches at 202 Stafford Street and 17 Wolverhampton Road.
Mr Culpin’s business was founded in 1895 at 120 Stafford Street. A second branch opened in Wolverhampton Road in May, 1914, followed by a third branch in Stafford Street which opened in November, 1914. Six years ago a fine modern bakery was erected at the rear of the shop in which every operation is performed on modern hygienic principles, and under the personal supervision of the proprietor. The walls are in glazed tile work, and Cox's Heat-Trap ovens have been installed, each measuring nine feet deep by five feet wide, and fitted with the usual thermal indicators, etc. The bakery buildings have recently been extended. Mr. Culpin's establishment is called The Electric Machine Bakery. Deliveries are effected by a large and smartly appointed motor van, which can be seen daily busily employed supplying the needs of the public of the district with the utmost promptitude. Flour is selected from the best millers and all the ingredients used for bread and confectionery are pure and wholesome. Bread is not an occasional food, it is an everyday necessity."

Having established his bakery business, Frank married Annie ROBINSON at Hednesford, Staffordshire on 25 August 1896. Annie had been born in Hednesford on 15 Dec 1872 to Samuel ROBINSON and Harriet (TALBOT).

1896 marriage certificate for Frank CULPIN.

Frank and Annie had four children, but three died soon after birth:

NameBirthDeath
Horace CULPIN Sep 1897 Walsall Sep 1897 Walsall
Annie CULPIN Jun 1898 Walsall Jun 1898 Walsall
Charles CULPIN Mar 1899 Walsall Mar 1899 Walsall
Archibald CULPIN 15 July 1901 Walsall Sep 1980, Bournemouth

But the marriage did not last for long. As early as 1901 there was strife (allegedly) and on 5 Octeber 1909 Frank filed for divorce. The case ambled through the court but on 27 January 1911 he was granted a decree nisi and on 23 August 1911 this was made absolute. The court also awarded custody of their son Archibald in the interim to Frank.

1911 divorce papers for Frank CULPIN and Annie CULPIN.

You can read the whole divorce file here.

In 1911 we find Frank living at 120 Stafford St, Walsall (his bakery) but is listed as a "boarder" with the CLAMP family, Annie was boarding in Newcastle upon Tyne and Archbald was with his Aunt Ethra WARD (Frank's sister).

1911: Frank was boarding at his bakery with the CLAMP family .

1911: Annie was boarding at Newcastle.

1911: Archibald was with his Aunt Ethra.

Surprising, perhaps, Frank William remarrried in Walsall in early 1912 to Florence Baker BROWNHILL. Frank was aged 40 and Florence was 36. Florence was the daughter of Theophilis BROWNHILL and Hannah (BAKER). In the 1881 census Florence and family were living at 88 Stafford St, Walsall, just a few shops along from 120 Stafford St where Frank set up his bakery. By 1901 the BROWNHILL family had moved to 96 Bloxwich Rd, Walsall. (Note that in the divorce proceedings, in around 1901 Annie complained when Frank said he was delivering a bottle of pills to an address in Bloxwich - Florence perhaps?)

Frank and Florence had one child - John Paul CULPIN (the Paul from her father's middle name) born 29 Sep 1914.

The 1939 register reveals more intrique.

  • Frank William has now retired from the bakery and moved to Stratford-on-Avon. He is living with Edith K "CULPIN", both shown as "married". Indeed they were but not to each other. Frank was still married to Florence and Edith was still married to Marcel LEFAUCHEUR, a French national with whom she had three children.
  • Annie CULPIN was living alone at Cannock (shown as married but in fact now divorced).
  • Frank's second wife Florence was living at 51 Kingley Street, Walsall with their son John Paul, now a law clerk.
  • Finally, Archibald had married and was living with his wife Winifred (BROWN) at 28 Hillside Rd, Birmingham.

1939: Frank CULPIN at Whitley Cottages, Stratford -on-Avon.

1939: Annie CULPIN at 1 Station Rd, Hednesford, Cannock

1939: Florence CULPIN and son John Paul at 51 Kingley St Walsall.

1939: Archibald and wife Winifred at 28 Hillside Rd, Birmingham.
What happened to them all?

Frank William died at Stratford-on-Avon in 1941, presumably still living with Edith LEFAUCHEUR.

Annie CULPIN/ROBINSON never married after the divorce (despite some people marrying her off to William Edwards in 1912 at Wellington. That Annie ROBINSON was born Wrockwardine, Shropshire 23 OCtober 1875. If Annie had married Edwards, why was she recorded in 1939 as Annie CULPIN, divorced?) Annie CULPIN died in early 1970, the death registered at Cannock (Mar 1970 9b/247). Date of birth given at death was 15 December 1872 (correct) - Annie ROBINSON/CULPIN gave her DOB as 15 Dec 1873 (transcription error?) in the 1939 register, so we can be sure this is the same Annie. Cannock was the registration district for Hednesford, where Annie's parents had run a beer hall in 1871-1891 and which was taken over by Harriet and later her son William in 1911

Florence CULPIN (Frank's second wife) died at 51 Kingsley St, Pleck, Walsall on 25 May 1959.

Archibald CULPIN was born 21 August 1901 at Walsall. He became a motor engineer and haulage contractor. He married Winifred May BROWNE at Walsall in 1924. In 1935 and 1939 they were living at 28 Hillside Rd, Birmingham. They did not have any children. Archibald died at Bournemouth in 1980. Winifred died at 10 Clifton Rd, Bournemouth on 25 May 1985.

John Paul CULPIN was born 29 September 1914 at Walsall. He obtaiend a B. Laws degree from Birmingham and became a lawyer. On 18 September 1943 he married Eileen Dora BEETLESTONE, a law clerk, the daughter of Hubert BEETLESTONE and Maude (WILLIAMS). They had 2 children, born 1947 and 1950.

Marriage of John Paul CULPIN and Eileen BEETLESTONE in 1943. Lichfield Mercury 24 Sept 1943.

John Paul CULPIN died at 225 Kimbolton Rd, Bedford on 28 March 1993. Eileen died there in March 2000.

Ethra Jenny CULPIN 1876-1953

Ethra Jenny CULPIN was born 14 February 1876 at Great Easton, Leicestershire. She was recorded in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses with her family at Great Easton. Ethra married Walter Ashby WARD at Great Easton on 28 October 1909. They had one child, John Godfrey (1910-1917). In 1911 they were living at Littleworth, Belton. Their son John Godfrey died at Belton in 1917, aged 7 years.

Marriage of Ethra CULPIN and Walter WARD.

1911: Ethra and Walter WARD at Littleworth,Belton, with son John and Ethra's mother.

1939: Ethra and Walter WARD at Belton with Ethra's sister Lydia.

Walter Ashby WARD died at Belton on 10 February 1953 aged 82. His wife Ethra died a few weeks later on 11 April 1953 aged 77.
