The Goldsworthy Family Of LondonJohn Frederick Goldsworthy (1829-1894) and Henrietta BOWCHER (1833-1910)My grandmother, Eliza Agnes Goldsworthy married William Froggatt in Sydney in 1910. Her father was George GOLDSWORTHY, John Frederick's and Henrietta's son and one of 14 siblings. This page gives information about John Frederick's family. Follow the links in the tree for information about the earlier families.
John Frederick GoldsworthyJohn Frederick was born 31 January 1829, in Milton St, Marylebone, London to John Goldsworthy and Mary (DENNIS). He was baptised on 22 February 1829 at St Mary, Bryanston Sq, London. John was a baker, born in Sidbury, Devon about 1800. In the 1841 census John is living with the family at 10 New St, Marylebone. By 1851 he has set uphis own business at 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington. John Frederick married Henrietta BOWCHER on 22 Sept 1851 in the Trinity District Church St Marys Newington, Lambeth in the County of Surrey. There is a suggestion that this was an arranged marriage. Henrietta was living with her cousin as her parents had died a few years earlier. Henrietta was born about 1833 in Middlesex, daughter of James and Charlotte BOWCHER. (See the Bowcher page for more information).
John and Henrietta had 13 or 14 children, 11 were born, registered and baptised in London before the family migrated to Melbourne in 1873.
Did son William exist? The passenger list for the McDuff that took the Goldsworthy family to Melbourne records a son William, aged 1. The ship sailed on 19 May 1873, so this William would have been born between June 1871 and May 1872. This is not possible as Emily was born 2 November 1871 as shown by the birth registration and the baptism record. John Frederick's death certificate (see below) confirms this - 13 children are listed, but not William. The informant would have been Henrietta, John's wife. William did not exist. Somehow the purser of the McDuff wrote William instead of Emily. In 1861 the growing family were at 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington.Bathurst St, Paddington today: The building at 2 Bathurst St still exists - adjacent to the Archery Tavern at No 4. Today it is (or was) an Indian restaurant. In 1871 the shop at No 3 was a butcher operated by John Hobbs and the tavern was managed by Edward Barwell. Migration to Melbourne, AustraliaOn 19 May 1873 the family boarded the sailing ship, the MacDuff, bound for Melbourne, where they arrived on 21 August 1873. The ship's manifest lists John aged 44 and Henrietta aged 39. They were accompanied by all 9 living children - Frederick and Minnie had died prior to departure. Their next son, Walter, was born in Melbourne in September 1873, so Henrietta was pregnant prior to the voyage.
Life in AustraliaThe first recorded address for John and Henrietta was in High St, Preston, and they lived there for 10 years. They then moved to Woods St, Preston in 1883-84, and Brunswick St, Fitzroy during 1884-1888. Finally John and Henrietta moved to Sale, Gippsland to live with their son John and his wife Catherine and family. John Frederick died in Sale, Gippsland on 6 Dec 1894, aged 64. He is buried at Sale Cemetery.
Henrietta, John and his wife Catherine soon left Sale and returned to Melbourne. Henrietta died in Northcote, Victoria on 11 September 1910, aged 77.
The Children of John Frederick GOLDSWORTHY & Henrietta BOWCHERHenrietta GOLDSWORTHYHenrietta was born at 2 Bathurst St, Paddington on 16 July 1853 and baptised at St James, Paddington on 14 August 1853. She was recorded in he 1861 and 1871 censuses with her parents at 2 Bathurst St. Henrietta emigrated to Melbourne, Australia with the family in 1873. She married Alfred Theodore DUNNING in Melbourne on 21 September 1878. There is more about Henrietta and her family here. You can read her story then follow the link back to this page.Annie GOLDSWORTHY 1855-1942Annie was born at 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington, London on 22 May 1855 and baptised at St James Church, Paddington on 12 September 1855. In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne, Annie married August Wilhelm FETTLING on 6 March 1880. There is more about Annie and her family here.Charlotte GOLDSWORTHY (1857-1920)Charlotte Goldsworthy was born 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington, London on 27 Feb 1857 and baptised at St James Church, Paddington on 5 August 1857. She was recorded in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with the family in Paddington.
In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Charlotte became a nurse and moved to Berrigan, New South Wales. Here she met James ADAMS, an Irishman born in Dublin and working on a sheep station at Berrigan. Charlotte and James returned to Seymour, Victoria (presumably where her parents were living) in order to marry on 6 June 1891. She was aged 33 and James was 40. According to the marriage cetificate, James had been born in Dublin to William Henry ADAMS and Margaret MACKLIN (his birth is not yet available from the Irish records). There is an immigration record for a James ADAMS, labourer, arriving Sydney in 1885 onboard the SS Liguria that may be him.
We do not know anything more about the life of Charlotte and James. They did not have any children. Charlotte died at Austin Hospital, Plenty Rd, Heidelberg, Victoria on 17 August 1920. She was aged 63 and a widow. James had died some time prior. There is a death record for a James at Broken Hill in 1898 that may be him.
John Goldsworthy (1859-1932)John was born 2 September 1859 in Paddington and baptised at Paddington St James on 20 November 1859.
John was recorded with the family at 2 Bathhurst St in the 1861 census, but was attending a school in Croydon, Surrey in 1871.
In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne, John married Catherine LEE on 4 March 1884. Both were aged 24. Catherine had been born in Clunes, Victoria on 17 January 1860 to Joseph Daniel LEE and Elizabeth LOWE. Nine months later their first child, John Stanley was born at 4 Silverton Tce, Brunswick St, Fitzroy on 18 December 1884. John's occupation was letter sorter.
John and Catherine had nine children:
John worked for the Post Office as a Mail Officer. In 1904 his wages were 75 shillings per week, or £195 per year (about $36,000 in 2020 dollars). John GOLDSWORTHY died at 6 Spring St, Ormond, Melbourne on 21 January 1932. His wife Catherine outlived him by 12 years, dying at Glenhuntly on 14 February 1950, outliving 7 of her 9 children. Both are buried at Brighton General Cemetery.
George Goldsworthy (1861-1929)George was born 19 July 1861 at 2 Bathhurst St, in Paddington and baptised at Paddington St James on 1 December 1861.
George was recorded with the family at 2 Bathhurst St in the 1871 census, aged 9. In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne, George married Eliza Agnes HUTCHISON on 24 October 1883. They had 8 children. There is more about George and his family here.Mary GOLDSWORTHY (1865-1926)Mary was born 4 January 1865 at Paddington and baptised 2 April 1865 at Paddington St James. In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Mary married Reginald HUGHES in Paddington, Sydney in 1900. They had 3 children, all born in the Sydney area. There is more about Mary and her family hereHelen GOLDSWORTHY (1868-1949)Helen was born at 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington on 6 March 1868 and baptised at Paddington St James on 19 April 1868. In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Helen was aged only 5. As with some of her siblings, Helen moved to Sydney where she married James Albert Seymour GRAHAM at St Michaels Church Surry Hills on 14 May 1895. She was 26.
The Graham family were farmers. James (the elder) was born at Mayfield, east of Nowra in 1850. He later moved to Green Hills, Nowra where he farmed, becoming a noted grower of maize and lucerne. He was also a prominent local cricketer. His son James Albert was born at Green Hills on 7 June 1872. Helen and James had two children: Douglas Erle born 25 February 1896 and Nigel Eric born 4 January 1899. Douglas joined the AIF in 1916 and was killed in France on 14 April 1918. By 1913 James and Helen were farming at Woodlands, Goulburn. On 27 November 1916 James joined the Army, aged 42. He arrived in Suez on 20 June 1917 and appears to have spent most of his service in base roles, including as CQMS but he was also posted for a short time to the 15th Light Horse Regiment. Although his record has him being appointed to various ranks he was repeatedly demoted again, but despite this he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, gazetted on 17 October 1919. He arrived back in Sydney and was discharged on 21 May 1919. After the war, James worked at various jobs across NSW. In the 1930 electoral roll James and Helen were living at 71 Grandview St, Pymble with their son Nigel and his wife Mary but they were not there in 1931. At about this time James went gold mining at Cooking Gully, Mudgee, NSW where he died suddenly on 24 August 1932 of a cerebral haemorrhage as determined by the coroner's inquest into his death. He was buried at the Northern Suburbs Cemetery, North Ryde. After his death Helen, Nigel and Mary were back at Hillcrest, Avon Rd Pymble in 1932 through to 1937. Helen GRAHAM (née GOLDSWORTHY) died in Chatswood on 16 January 1949.
Of their children:
Nigel Eric GRAHAM: was born 4 January 1899 at Nowra, NSW. He married Mary Alexandra Annie RANDALL at Gosford in 1926. They appear not to have had any children. Nigel and Mary lived in the Pymble area through the 1930s together with his parents James and Helen, but by 1943 Nigel was on his own and Mary was living alone at 54 Provincial Rd, Lindfield. and in 1949 at Redbank Rd Lindfield. Nigel enlisted in the AIF in about 1941. Back in Australia Nigel moved to Queensland where in 1949 he was living at Kedron Brook Rd, Wilston. By 1954 he was living at 94 Effingham St, Ekibin with Leonie Maud (HURFORD), whom he had recently married. In the 1943 electoral roll Leonie was living at Bell St, Boonah, Queensland and working as a "costumière" (dressmaker). Nigel and Leonie moved to 56 Effingham St where they remained. Nigel died on 1 June 1970, aged 71. His second wife Leonie died 14 June 1999. Both are buried at Boonah General Cemetery Queensland. Nigel's first wife Mary, died 15 April 1987 in NSW. Kate GOLDSWORTHY (1870-)Kate GOLDSWORTHY was born at 2 Bathhurst St Paddington on 9 March 1870 and baptised 20 November 1870 at Paddington St James. She was the tenth child of John and Henrietta. She was recorded in the 1871 census with the family.
In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne Kate married Sidney Horace FRANCIS in 1896. Kate was aged 26 but Sidney was 40. Sidney was an accountant who had been born in Paddington, London on 16 November 1856 to Frederick John FRANCIS and Sophia Dorothea (THRUPP). Frederick was an architect. Sidney joined the Merchant Navy as an indentured apprentice for a term of three years (17 July 1874 to 17 July 1877) but for reasons unstated the indenture was cancelled on 22 September 1875. In the 1881 census Sidney was back living with his parents and was a wine merchant. He is not obvious in the 1891 census so may have emigrated to Australia by this time.
After marriage, Sidney and Kate soon moved to Queensland where two children were born: Vera Helen on 11 March 1901 and Eric Sidney on 27 September 1904. The electoral rolls for 1905 and 1906 tell us they were living at Roseberry St, Brisbane. After that date they appear to have moved to Sydney, where Vera was baptised at St Michael's, Flinders St, Sydney on 26 November 1915 (unless the baptism was performed during a visit to Sydney). By 1919 through to 1925 Sidney was back in Queensland, at Surat (west of Brisbane). Later, in 1925-1928 he was listed at Glass House Mountains, Caboolture (north of Brisbane) and had become a farmer. By 1930 Sidney had moved to Lismore, NSW where he was living at 39 Uralba St, occupation was gardener. Sidney Horace FRANCIS died at Lismore in 1931. Kate does not appear to have returned to Queensland as she is not listed in the electoral rolls after 1905 with Sidney. She reappears in the 1930 roll living with her daughter Vera (now married to John SEYMOUR) at 70a High St, North Sydney. Kate FRANCIS (née GOLDSWORTHY) died in North Sydney in 1955. Of the two children: John Joseph SEYMOUR died on 25 March 1955. Vera Helen died 23 December 1989. Both are buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery, North Ryde.
Eric Sidney FRANCIS was born in Queensland on 27 September 1904. The family were living at 17 oately Rd, Sydney in 1914 when Eric was struck by a motor cyclist and killed on 31 October 1914. He is buried at the Church of England Cemetery at Woronora, Sydney. Emily GOLDSWORTHY (1871-1955)Emily was born at Paddington, London on 2 November 1871 and baptised at Paddington St James on 21 January 1872. She was born after the date of the 1871 census so was not recorded.
On 19 May 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. Emily was not recorded on the ship passenger list, if she had been she would have been 1 year old. Instead, a William was recorded, age 1. I suggest "William" was in fact Emily. A William GOLDSWORTHY does not appear in any of the Australian records, but an Emily does, suggesting Emily did in fact arrive in Melbourne with John and Henrietta. Emily GOLDSWORTHY is recorded in the 1908 to 1913 electoral rolls at 589 King St, Melbourne. In 1914 to 1917 she had moved to 103 Westbury St, St Kilda. In 1919 to 1929 she was at 83 Westbury St, then 24 Grosvenor St from 1931 to 1942. In 1949 she was at 65 Westbury St, St Kilda, Melbourne. Emily did not marry. She died in Caulfield, Melbourne in 1955.
Below this point is work in progress.Walter GOLDSWORTHY (1873-)Walter was born in Melbourne on 18 September 1873. He moved to Kalgoorlie, Western Australia to try his hand at gold mining. He worked on the Morning Star Lease from about 1900 to 1906. Here he married Margaret Mary WHITE at Boulder, Kalgoorlie in 1900. They had one son in Boulder - John William GOLDSWORTHY (1901). After working as a miner Walter and Margaret vanish from Australia - until they reappear in the records in Johannesburg, South Africa. I cannot find a shipping record for them travelling to South Africa but their son John William died in Johannesburg in November 1903 so they arrived before that date. In South Africa, Walter died on 31 August 1912. There are two versions of his death certificate available. One of these records his home address as 10 Norman St, Rosettenville, Johannesburg.
The probate record includes Walter's Will. He leaves his estate to his wife Margaret, except his gold watch and chain and his gold ring that go to his son Walter.
Margaret GOLDSWORTHY remained in Johannesburg, dying at Johannesburg Hospital on 13 June 1940. She had been living at 26 Crown Rd, Fordsburg, Johannesburg (now a car parking building) and was buried at New Cemetery, Brixton.
The children of Walter and Margaret GOLDSWORTHYJohn William GOLDSWORTHY (1901-1903) was born in Boulder, Kalgoorlie in 1901. He travelled to South Africa with the family and died there of measles on 10 November 1903 at 267 Marshall St, Johannesburg.
Eileen GOLDSWORTHY (c.1903-?) was born about 1903. Her marriage certificate records her place of birth as Australia but I cannot find a recod of this. However the marriage in 1927 also claims she was aged 22, giving year of birth as 1904-1905, but we know the family was in Johannesburg by this date (see death for John William above). Was she born on the ship? Eileen GOLDSWORTHY married John William TREWIN in Johannesburg on 28 September 1927. Eileen claimed she was aged 22 and John was aged 42.
John ane Eileen had at least one child - Aisleen Agnes TREWIN, born 13 May 1928 at 8 Walton Ave, Auckland Park Johannesburg and baptised at St Peter Church, Auckland Park. John William died in Pretoria on 28 May 1954 and is buried at New Cemetery, Pretoria.
Walter Charles GOLDSWORTHY (1906-) was born in South Africa in 1905-06. He married Ruth Millar in Johannesburg on 1 October 1928. Walter was aged 22 and an electrician.
Charles GOLDSWORTHY (1878-)Charles GOLDSWORTHY was born 18 November 1878 in Melbourne, the 13th and last child born to John Frederick and Henrietta. He moved to Sale, Victoria with John and Henrietta to live with his brother John. He became of unsound mind and was admitted to the Kew Asylum in Melbourne on 14 May 1896, brought in by the Police. The record notes his mother was Mrs H. Goldsworthy (now in Sydney) and his close relatives were W(alter) Goldsworthy (brother) of Perth and J(ohn) Goldsworthy of Sale. Charles remained in care for just over 12 months before escaping on 10 August 1897. His record stops at that point, suggesting he was not located, nor was he returned to Kew. I wonder what happened to him?
