Mary was born 4 January 1865 at 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington and baptised 2 April 1865 at Paddington St James.

Mary was recorded with the family at 2 Bathhurst St in the 1871 census, aged 6.

1871: the Goldsworthy family at 2 Bathhurst St

On 19 May 1873 the GOLDSWORTHY family boarded the sailing ship, the MacDuff, bound for Melbourne, where they arrived on 21 August 1873. The ship's manifest lists John aged 44 and Henrietta aged 39 and Mary aged 8.

Passenger list for the MacDuff which departed London for Port Phillip (Melbourne) on 19 May 1873.

Mary did not remain in Melbourne. In 1900 she married Reginald Frederick HUGHES in Paddington, Sydney. Reginald had been born 14 July 1876 at Wellington, NSW to Henry and Frances HUGHES. In 1900 through 1902 Mary and Reginald were residing in Wellington (a small town southeast of Dubbo). In 1900 Reginald stood, unsuccessfully, for election as an alderman on the municipal council. In May 1902 he dissolved the partnership of York, Rodda and Hughes, trading as auctioneers. In 1904 Reginald was reported in court as he owed George Crawley £s;25, cash lent. He then moved to Bellingen to work for William Secombe, auctioneer, but in 1910 was again in court and was convicted of embezzlement of £23 18s and sentenced to two months hard labour, suspended under the first offenders act.

The next we know of Reginald he joined the public service in Sydney on 24 March 1911 as a temporary officer in the taxation department. In 1919 he transferred as a clerk in the office of the Valuer-General. In 1923 he was on a salary of £273 (about $28,000 in 2020). In 1925 the Governor of NSW announced that the services of Mr Reginald HUGHES of the Office of the Valuer-General were to be dispensed with. Reginald was now 48 years old. A year later his wife Mary died. In the 1930 electoral roll Reginald was living alone at 169 Macquarie St, East Sydney.

Mary and Reginald had 3 children:

The Children of Mary and Reginald HUGHES

Edna Lysle Goldsworthy HUGHES

Registered as Edna but known as Lysle, she was born in 1902 in Wellington NSW. She married William Victor SALMON at St Clements Church, Mosman on 13 June 1931. She was aged 28 and he was 30. William was the son of William Charles SALMON and Rosalie Sarah Elizabeth RIPLEY. William was born in Lambeth, London on 16 July 1900 and was one of three children to William and Rose. William Victor is in the 1925 electoral roll for Lewisham, England, so left for Australia soon after this date. William, his wife Lysle and their daughter Jill sailed for England onboard the Ormonde, arriving in London on 22 November 1934. They stayed for 5 weeks, returning to Sydney on the ship Moldavia that departed London on 28 December 1934. William gave his contact address as Wakefield & Co, for whom he was a manager.

The witnesses were Olive, Lysle's sister and Arthur Root, Olive's future husband.

In the 1972 electoral roll, William and Lysle were living at 12 Irrubel Rd, Newport. Edna died at Newport, NSW on 29 June 1987. William predeceased her, dying at Newport on 7 July 1976. Florence Olive HUGHES (1904-1990)

Known as Olive, she was born on 4 January 1904 in Waverley, Sydney. She married Arthur Robert Edward ROOT in 1932 in Woollahra, NSW. Arthur was born in Kensington, London on 28 January 1903. Olive and Arthur had one daughter. It appears the couple separated or even divorced. Arthur moved to Adelaide where he died on 12 September 1972. He may have remarried as his death record mentions a Stella Joan ROOT as wife or widow. Olive moved to Canberra, where in 1965 she is reported as running an antique shop, "Chelsea Antiques" with a Mrs Campbell. Olive died in Sydney on 31 October 1990.

Mary Elsie HUGHES (1907-1956)

Registered as Mary but baptised as Elsie was born on 25 June 1907 at 68 Brown St, Paddington, Sydney and baptised at Paddington St Matthias on 24 November 1907. At that time her father William was a produce agent.

1907 baptism for Mary Elsie HUGHES at Paddington St Matthias.

After her baptism Mary/Elsie seems to disappear from the records. There is a death record for a Elsie Mary HUGHES, father Reginald, mother Mary at Chatswood, Sydney in 1956, at which date Mary would have been only 49.
