Annie GOLDSWORTHY 1855-1942

Annie was born at 2 Bathhurst St, Paddington, London on 22 May 1855 and baptised at St James Church, Paddington on 12 September 1855.

1855 baptism for Annie GOLDSWORTHY at St James, Paddington.

Annie was recorded in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with the family at 2 Bathhurst St. In 1873 the family emigrated to Melbourne, Australia. In Melbourne, Annie married August Wilhelm FETTLING on 6 March 1880. August was a watchmaker and jeweller. He was aged 38 and Annie was 25. August was also a widower as he had married Jane MURRELL at St Lukes, St Pancras, London on 13 August 1865. August had been born in Coblenz, Rheinland on 7 June 1842, the son of Johann August FETTLING (a baker) and Elizabetha GROSSE. August and Jane emigrated to Melbourne, where Jane died on 2 February 1879. They do not appear to have had any children. August had a brother, Peter, who also emigrated to Melboune, where he married Jane WHEELHOUSE in 1877.

Less than a month after their marriage in 1880, August and Annie sailed to Dunedin, New Zealand on the s.s. Tararua. They departed Melbourne on 21 September and arrived in Dunedin on 28 September 1880. August worked in Dunedin as a watchmaker. He occupied premises in 32 Princes St that were owned by Mr Alfred DUNNING, his brother-in-law. They had 2 children, twins, born in Dunedin on 17 September 1871. But Dunedin did not suit them. Annie set sail back to Melbourne on 8 March 1883 onboard the s.s Manapouri. It appears that August returned to Melbourne on the s.s. Wairarapa departed Dunedin on 10 August 1883. Despite his departure, the local Otago newspapers continued to run advertisements for A. Fettling jeweller right through until the end of February 1885. A previous employee of August, Mr Eric G. VEITCH continued to operate the business under Fettling's name until he too, left the colony around 7 March 1885. Back in Melbourne, Annie soon had another child, August, born some time in 1883. I do not have the birth certificate so do not know whether August was in Melbourne for the birth. August and Annie had four children in Melbourne, six children in total:

After having the six children August disappears from the records. He is not in the electoral rolls although Annie and her children are in the rolls. The next we know for sure is when August FETTLING died on 22 June 1920. Annie outlasted him by 27 years, dying in Coburg on 23 March 1942. Both are buried at Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery, Victoria, grave CoE H374. Also in that grave are August and Annie's daughter Annie who died in 1947.

Albert became a watchmaker, following his father. Albert married Emma Christina Friederike SCHMADDEBECK in Northcote Victoria on 18 March 1911. Emma had been born in Satow, Germany on 9 October 1874 to Joachim SCHMADDEBECK and Sophia PENZEIN. She emigrated to Australia sometime after the 1900 census in Germany.

Albert and Emma had three children:

August FETTLING 1883-1957

August (known as Gus) was born in Victoria in 1883. He also became a watchmaker. He married Augusta Jean RASSMUSSEN in Victoria in 1916. (August and Augusta must have created much mirth and confusion.) Augusta had been born in 1886 in Victoria to Hans RASSMUSSEN and Agnes Paulia Julia BOTTEN, who had married in 1885 in Victoria. Hans had been born in Denmark, whereas Agnes was born in Victoria. By 1913 August was living in Castlemaine and this is where August and Augusta settled after marriage.

Table Talk 10 August 1916.

The early electoral rolls have August at Barker St (his shop) and Augusta at Berkeley St, Castlemaine (their residence). Later they lived at 48 Urquhart St, Castlemaine.

August and Augusta had four children:

Name Date of Birth Date of Death Date of Marriage Spouse
Beverley FETTLING 1918 Castlemaine 1918 Castlemaine (age 5 months) - -

August FETTLING died at Castlemaine on 26 August 1957. Augusta died 10 years later, on 11 December 1967. Both are buried at the Campbells Creek Cemetery, Castlmaine.

Of their children:
Joyce Fettling did not marry. She worked as a typist, living for many years at the family home in Urquhart St, Castlemaine. Around 1976 she moved to 4/2 Willow Grove, Camberwell, Melbourne where she resided until at least 1980. Joyce died at Bendigo on 2 June 2008.

Jack FETTLING was born 31 Ocotober 1931 at Castlemaine. He also became a watchmaker. He married Doreen Isabel WOOD at Castlemaine on 5 April 1952. They had three children. Bertha FETTLING 1885-1952

Bertha was born in Brunswick, Melbourne Victoria on 17 November 1885. She became a dressmaker. In the 1909 electoral roll she was living with her brother Fritz at 687 Brunswick St, North Fitzroy. In the 1910 and 1911 Sands Directory she advertised as a "fashionable dressmaker & costumière" of 107 Gertrude St, Fitzroy.

Sands 1910 Directory. The Miss A. Fettling is Bertha's aunt.

Bertha married her first cousin John Stanley GOLDSWORTHY (see the Goldsworthy family story here) on 5 March 1910 in Northcote, Victoria. John was a savings bank manager, according to his Will in 1919.

Allan and Hetty appear to have had only one child - John Lee GOLDSWORTHY, born 20 September 1936 in Melbourne. Allan appears to have gone into banking, but after 1954 is listed as a company director, living at River Ave, Plenty, Melbourne. He appears to have joined his son in a poultry business. Allan also became the general director of the United Poultery Farmer's Society in Preston.

Notice of intention to establish an "offensive trade".
