THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDHannah GODKIN 1810-1861Hannah was baptised at St Nicholas, Nottingham on 8 April 1810, the fourth child of Samuel Godkin and Hannah Froggatt. Nothing is known of Hannah's early life. She is not in the 1841 census because she had already emigrated to Australia. Shortly after arriving in Melbourne Hannah married Edward ASLING and they had 4 children before Hannah died in 1861 - Elizabeth, George, Jane and Alice.
Emigration to AustraliaHannah boarded the small sailing ship "England" bound for Australia, arriving in Port Phillip (Melbourne) on 17 July 1841. The ship was 939 tons and carried 372 people, although 18 died on the voyage (16 children and 2 adults) and there were 3 births. The ship was quarantined on arrival due to an outbreak of Whooping Cough, from which several people died. Hannah was one of many assisted immigrants on the ship, and the Victoria State Government paid a bounty of 19 pounds to Messrs A.B. Smith & Co. There were two other people on the same ship of interest: her
cousin Samuel GODKIN and an Edward ASLING - whom she later married. In the 1841 census Hannah's family were living at Coalpit Lane, Nottingham and Edward's family were in Lambley, several miles northeast of
Nottingham. It would seem unlikely that they knew each other before embarking on the ship, but in the crowded conditions would have soon met onboard.
Marriage to Edward ASLINGA few months after their arrival in Melbourne, Hannah GODKIN married Edward ASLING at St James Church on 10 January 1842: Hannah and Edward had four children:
Edward and family settled in Brighton, a coastal area south of Melbourne, Australia. In the 1856 Electoral Roll, Edward ASLING is listed living at Brighton, farmer of freehold land. Their four children all married and had families - 36 grandchildren in total. (This number of children is difficult to fit onto a tree that can be read on screen.) Hannah ASLING (née GODKIN) died of cancer, aged 51 on 21 December 1861 at Brighton. She left 4 children, aged between 11 and 17. She is buried in the Brighton General Cemetery. Marriage of Edward ASLINGA few years later, on 12 November 1872, Edward ASLING, widower, married Eliza BELTON (widow) at 174 Gertrude St, Fitzroy although both were resident in Brighton. The marriage certificate notes that Edward had been a widower since 1871, but in fact Hannah had died 10 years earlier in 1861. Eliza had lost her husband George BELTON 6 months earlier, on 17 May 1872. It would appear that George had been an undertaker who had buried Hannah in 1861 (see death certificate above.) Some time after the marriage, Edward and Eliza moved to Narre Warren, southeast of Melbourne where Edward's son George (and all of George's sons) are listed in the 1903 electoral roll as farmers. But it would appear Edward and Eliza did not get on well together and on occasions Eliza "ill-used" her husband. In 1890 Eliza was charged with assaulting her husband, imprisoned for 3 days and then was bound over to keep the peace for 3 months. This had a sequel in court two months later. Edward was now aged 78 and Eliza "over 70" but Eliza left him and sued for maintenance. This was granted at 15 shillings per week.
Edward ASLING died at Narre Warren on 24 October 1892 of cardiac disease and Pneumonia. The informant was his only son George. It is interesting to note that George did not know the occupation of his grandfather (farmer) or the maiden name of his grandmother (RAGSDALE). Furthermore, he did not record that his father had been married twice, only recording his mother Hannah GODKIN (but in the light of the newspaper reports it is not surprising...). Eliza ASLING (BELTON nee HEYWOOD) died in 1907 in Brighton, Melbourne, presumably she returned to Brighton to live with her family after she left Edward. The Family of Hannah and Edward ASLINGElizabeth Maria ASLING (1844-1923)Elizabeth was born 24 March 1844 at Mt Macedon, Victoria. Elizabeth married William HORSWOOD on 24 August 1863 (possibly at Melbourne St John). After her marriage Elizabeth and William moved to Narre Warren, Dandenong. They had 10 children. William HORSWOOD died 19 May 1898 at Dandenong. Elizabeth died at Narre Warren on 19 Jan 1923 and was buried at Dandenong Cemetery alongside her husband William.
