THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDElizabeth Maria ASLING (1844-1923)The ASLING-GODKIN Family in Victoria, AustraliaIntroductionHannah GODKIN and Edward ASLING emigrated from Nottingham to Victoria on board the small sailing ship "England", arriving in Port Phillip (Melbourne) on 17 July 1841. A few months after their arrival in Melbourne Hannah GODKIN married Edward ASLING at St James Church on 10 January 1842. They had four children: Elizabeth Maria was their oldest. Elizabeth Maria ASLING (1844-1923)Elizabeth was born 24 March 1844 at Mt Macedon, Victoria. The family's residence here was temporary as Elizabeth was baptised at Melbourne St John on 11 April 1844. The family later moved to the new area of Brighton south of Melbourne. Elizabeth married William HORSWOOD on 24 August 1863 (possibly at Melbourne St John). After her marriage Elizabeth and William moved to Dandenong.
Elizabeth and William HORSWOOD had 10 children:
William HORSWOOD died 19 May 1898 at Dandenong. He was buried at the Dandenong Cemetery, plot Methodist H-9/18. Elizabeth later moved to Narre Warren where her family were now farming. Elizabeth and sons William, Joseph and Henry were recorded In the 1903-1906 electoral rolls at Narre Warren. By 1909 Elizabeth was living at Emerald. Elizabeth died at Narre Warren on 19 Jan 1923 and was buried at Dandenong Cemetery alongside her husband William. The Children of William and Elizabeth HORSWOODEliza HORSWOOD (1864-1935)Eliza HORSWOOD was born 13 August 1864 in Frankston, Vic. She married Thomas ELLIS on 2 April 1888. Thomas had been born in 1867 to Thomas ELLIS and Ellen (COCHRANE) but there is little else known about him. They had 4 children:
From Brunswick the family moved to Tungamah in northern Victoria before 1902. It is not clear what Thomas did but was probably a farm labourer. According to the family, the relationship between Eliza and Thomas appeared to be dysfunctional. Thomas abandoned the family around 1910 and there are no more records definitely relating to him. Eliza and the four children then moved back to Melbourne and lived at 16 Rupert St, Collingwood. Eliza ELLIS died on 6 June 1935 at the residence of her daughter Isabel (CAMPBELL). Of the children of Eliza and Thomas ELLIS Ida May ELLIS (1891-1959): was born 3 April 1891 at Brunswick, Victoria. She married Rupert Ernest COLLINS on 10 October 1914. Rupert had been born in 1893 to Ralph COLLINS and Martha (WILSON). They had 5 children:
In the 1919 electoral roll Rupert was a lithographer, living at 138 Tinning St, Brunswick. By 1936 they were at 187 Hoddle St, Yarra, Melbourne. Rupert COLLINS died 28 January 1948 aged 55. He is buried at the Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery, plot Methodist 8/Y271. Ida May COLLINS (née ELLIS) died 10 July 1959 and was buried with her husband Rupert and their daughter Vera May COLLINS.
Alec Merrifield Phoenix ELLIS (1894-1933): was born 12 Jan 1894 at Brunswick, Victoria. He vanished from the Australian records after his birth. His life has been traced by his great nephew (see his story here). It appears that after his father abandoned the family around 1910 Alec left home to seek adventure elsewhere. He left a note with a younger sister (either Rose or Isabel) saying he was leaving and would be back in 3 months. He didn’t return and after decades passed the family had given him up for dead (see his mother's obituary above that states Alec is deceased). He probably ran away to sea, working on freighters. Alec turns up in the 1920 U.S. Census. He was working as a copper miner in Ray, Arizona. He gave his name as Alexander (rather than Alec), his age as 34 instead of 26 and lied about his year of immigration – saying 1906 although he was still living in Australia in 1910. At least his birth country of Australia is correct (and helped to locate him in the census.)
According to his great-nephew, throughout his life Alec Ellis seldom told the whole truth. He developed a narrative to show that he had led a life of excitement and adventure and in order to fit in with this narrative he always lied about his age. He always made out that he was about 10 years older than he actually was. On 15 November 1920 Alec Ellis married Susan Poor PERKINS in Tucson, Arizona. She sometimes used the name Althea PERKINS. Susan was the daughter of Henry Poor PERKINS and Estelle Lille ACKERS. She was born 17 June 1893 in Massachusetts but grew up in China where her parents were missionaries. In 1910 they returned to Massachusetts and later moved to Claremont, California. Susan then took up nursing training and graduated as a Registered Nurse under the name Althea PERKINS on 5 June 1919. It is possioble she worked at the Tucson-Arizona Hospital and Sanitorium (also known as Public Health Service Hospital No 51) that dealt with tuburculosis patients from the nearby mines. Later in life Alec mentioned his “gassed constitution from his war service didn’t mix with mining” so it is possible that Alec suffered from tuburculosis and met Susan in hospital in Tucson. Alec and Susan then moved to California and lived with Susan’s parents at 1102 Princeton Ave, Claremont. On 16 November 1921 Robert Horswood Ellis was born in County Los Angeles. On the birth certificate Alec said he was born in Fiji, was a mining engineer and was 38 years old instead of 27. In other news reports he was born in the Solomon Islands and was a soldier of fortune. Their daughter Marjorie ELLIS was born on 29 October 1925 in San Bernadino, Californis. By 1930 Alec was working as a car saleman in Claremont, California.
Apparently Susan convinced Alec to contact his family in Australia. He did and in 1931 took a position as bosun on a freighter headed for Melbourne. The SS "Golden Harvest" docked in Melbourne on 19 May 1931. A few photos exist of this reunion, taken by Rupert COLLINS at Hoddle St, Melbourne (husband of Ida, Alec's sister.) A week later Alec departed Melbourne on the "Golden Harvest". He returned to California, bought new trucks and started again in business, but his health failed and he died 10 July 1933. His wife Susan later married Kenneth VERRILL. She died at Columbus, Luna County New Mexico on 8 May 1984.
Rose Edith ELLIS (1896-1972): was born 21 Feb 1896 at Brunswick, Victoria. She married Joseph George HOGG in 1915. Joseph was born around 1888 to George HOGG and Helen (McCARDY). Joseph was a quarryman but he later became a farmer in Ferntree Gully. Joseph and Rose had two children: George Joseph HOGG (1916-1981) and Dorothy Rose HOGG (1919-1985). Joseph died 2 July 1963 aged around 75. Rose Edith HOGG died 13 July 1972 in Melbourne and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery. Their son George Joseph married Dora Winifred SMITH in 1938. They had five children, 4 of whom died in infancy: Dorothy Rose (1938-1938); George Edward Thomas (1941-1942); Robert Arthur (1945-1988); Deanna Winifred (1948-1948); and David (1958-1959). Their daughter Dorothy Rose did not marry. She died in Melbourne in 1985. Isabel(le) Elizabeth ELLIS (1902-1957): (also Isabel and Isabell) was born on 29 June 1902 at Tungamah, Victoria. She married William Rutherford CAMPBELL in 1933. William had been born on 7 November 1898 at the family home of 10 Calder place, Bothwellhaugh, Lanark, Scotland to William CAMPBELL a coal miner and Mary Jane (RUTHERFORD). William Rutherford served in the Highland Light Infantry in WW1 and emigrated to Australia after the war, probably in Dec 1920 on board the "Marathon". He was recorded in the 1928 electorial Roll as a fireman and in 1936 as a boiler attendent. William and Isabell appear not to have had any children. William died in St Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne on 14 July 1940 and was buried at Burwood Cemetery. Isabelle died on 17 August 1957 in Parkville, Vic.
Edward HORSWOOD (1866-1938)Edward was born at Schnapper Point, Mornington, Victoria. The birth index gives the year as 1866 but the baptism record has 12 June 1867. Edward was baptised at Moorooduc on 16 October 1867 so either date could be correct. Edwaed married Florence Kate MEYENN in Fitzroy, Victoria on 3 May 1909. Edward was aged 41 and Florence was 47, a widow with 6 children.
Florence MEYENN was a widow with 6 children, 5 still living. She had been born in 1861 in Nottingham to Lancelot MIDDLETON and Elizabeth (DENSTON). Florence MIDDLETON was the oldest of the 9 children of Lancelot and Elizabeth. She and her sister Ada had been born in Nottingham, the remainer of her siblings had been born in Melbourne. The family emigrated to Victoria around 1865-1868. Florence married Hugo Georg Fredrich MEYENN in 1882. Hugo had been born in Rostock, Mecklenburg Germany on 5 November 1842 and had emigrated to Victoria in 1876 on the "Glendaruel". He died at Coast Hospital, Sydney on 21 May 1898. In the 1909 electoral roll the couple were living at Fifteenth St, Mildura and Edward was a "settler" but by 1912 he was a fruit grower in Deakin Ave, Mildura. Edward and Florence did not have any children. Edward died 16 June 1938 in Mildura. Florence died 13 April 1949 in Melbourne. Both are buried in the Merbein Cemetery, Mildura.
Mary HORSWOOD (1870-1908)Mary was born 17 April 1870 in Narre Warren, Victoria. She married Henry William GOTT in 1892. Henry had been born in 1872 in Windsor to William GOTT and Sarah (HAINES). They had 3 children:
Mary GOTT died suddenly at 31 Bank St, South Melbourne (now modern high-rise apartments) on 23 July 1908. She was interred at the St Kilda Cemetery, plot CoE C.763.
After Mary died Henry and the 3 children remained in Melbounre. In the 1909 electoral roll they were living at 28 Roy St, South Melbourne and Henry was a driver as he was for all of his working life. Henry William GOTT married Eva Louisa ARDLEY in 1910 at Windsor. Eva had been born Eva Louisa LOGAN on 11 August 1872 at Port Sorrell, Tasmania to Alexander LOGAN and Elizabeth (STONEHOUSE). Eva had married William MARTIN in 1894 and had one son - William Alexander MARTIN born 1894. Her husband died and she then married in 1905 to George White ARDLEY and had another son - George Herbert Logan ARDLEY born 1906 in South Yarra. George died in 1909. Henry and Eva GOTT had one son - Eric Lloyd GOTT (1912-1975). Eva GOTT died suddenly at their home, "Tasma" 101 Eastern Rd, South Melbourne on 18 June 1926. Henry had now outlived his two wives. He died in 1941 and was interred on 7 Aug 1941 at St Kilda with his first wife Mary.
Of the children of Mary (HORSWOOD) and Henry GOTT: Charlotte GOTT (1892-1949) was born in 1892 in Prahran. She married in 1911 to Thomas SAWTELL, a driver. They had 3 children: James Thomas SAWTELL (1911-1991); Edna Gertrude SAWTELL (1913-); and Frederick SAWTELL (1918-1981). Thomas later became a dairyman. By 1934 they had moved to Mildura near Charlottte's grandparents - Edward and Florence HORSWOOD. Charlotte SAWTELL died in Bendigo in 1949. Thomas SAWTELL died in Melbourne in 1969. William Henry GOTT (1895-1976) was born in 26 August 1895 in Melbourne West. He enlisted in the Army in 1915, joining ithe 8th Light Horse Regiment. He served in Egypt and the Middle East befreo returning to Australia in 1919. William married Florence Evelyn FRY in Melbourne in 1924. Florence had been born 17 Sep 1905 to Harry FRY and Maud (GRAHAM). I cannot find any evidence for children. William died at the Repatriation Hospital Heidelburg on 21 July 1976. Florence died on 20 Jan 2003 and her ashes were interred with her husband's at Fawkner Memorial Park, Melbourne. Frederick Henry GOTT (1904-1977) was born 1904 at Emerald, Victoria. Frederick married Irene May McKENZIE in 1926. In 1931 they were living at Mildura where Frederick was a railway employee and later an engine driver. The couple may have had children, but in the early 1940s they separated and later divorced. Frederick then married Grace DOMINELLI, a widow. Grace GUY had married Vincenzo DOMINELLI in 1933, but Vincenzo died at Mooroopna in 1943. Later, in 1949, Irene May GOTT married George WILLIAMS but in 1956 Irene sued for dissolution, presumably because she discovered George was still married to Dorothy Parker.
Frederick GOTT remained in Mildura but by 1954 had moved to Shepperton, where he died in 1977. Grace remained in Shepperton and died there in Sep 2006. Both are buried at the Shepperton Public Cemetery. Elizabeth HORSWOOD (1873-1899)Elizabeth was born in 1873 at Dandenong, Victoria. Little more is known about her life. Kenneth was a carpenter in the 1931-1943 electoral rolls, living at Monbulk Rd, Emerald but after that, his occupation was "nil". Lorna was a saleswoman from 1943 to 1980. He married Lillie Florence BUCHANAN in Berwick in 1909. Lillie had been born in Melbourne in 1881 to Charles BUCHAHAN and Christina (McPHAIL). Frederick and Lillie appear not to have had any children. Some time after 1917 Frederick left his wife Lillie and moved to Mildura to live with his widowed sister-in-law Ruby HORSWOOD (née BEDWELL). In 1919 Ruby was living at Sandalong Ave, Mildura but Frederick gave his address as 8th St, Mildura. The Nobelius family later established a plant nursery and orchards at Emerald.
From Emerald Conrad and family moved to Warragul, a town 100km souteast of Melbourne. They established an orchard of apples and strawberries. Here Conrad became an authority on horticulture.
