THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDHANNAH FROGGATT (1775 – 1852)Hannah Froggatt was baptised in Wirksworth on 13 September 1775, the fourth and last child of James and Ellen FROGGATT. By 1797 the family had moved to Nottingham and settled into Brewhouse Yard, where James owned several stocking frames. Hannah FROGGATT married Samuel GODKIN at Papplewick St James (north of Nottingham) on 10 November 1794. Several records have births/baptisms for a Samuel GODKIN but none in Nottingham so it is likely that Samuel was born elsewhere, possibly Derbyshire in around 1765.
From the parish baptism records and the 1841 census, Hannah and Samuel had 5 children. The older two were baptised at Papplewick St James, then the family appears to have moved to Nottingham. There is a gap of 8 years before the next baptism in Nottingham but I cannot find any baptisms and there are no other children in the 1841 census. The family may have lived elsewhere or the baptisms may have been non-conformist but I cannot find any records.
Note that the record for Elizabeth has her mother's name as "Ann" and father Samuel, but as the baptism was at Papplewick it is likely that this is the correct family. If so, there was only 2 months between marriage and Elizabeth's birth. Death of Samuel GODKINSamuel GODKIN, cowkeeper, is listed in the Sherrif of Nottingham Poll Books for 1818 and 1820. Samuel GODKIN died on 11 July 1828 at Coal Pit Lane aged 63 and was buried on 14 July at Nottingham St Mary.
The 1841 census has Hannah (aged 65) living at Coalpit Lane, Nottingham, with her son George GODKIN, aged 25 and a cowkeeper.
In the 1851 census Hannah is still living with son George, now at Vernon Place (Back Lane). Son George is listed as a Hog Dealer and Cow Keeper. We can be sure this is the correct family as Hannah (Froggatt) gave her place of birth as Wirksworth:
Death of Hannah GODKINHannah GODKIN (née FROGGATT) died in Nottingham on the night of 1 June 1852. A coroner's inquest was held the next day, returning a decision of "natural causes".
The Children of Hannah and Samuel GODKINElizabeth GODKIN (1795-1856)Elizabeth was baptised 19 February 1795 at Papplewick St James, Nottingham. She married Francis WOLFE on Christmas Day, 25 December 1828 at Nottingham St Mary. Elizabeth and Francis had 5 children. There is more about the family of Elizabeth and Francis WOLFE hereSamuel GODKIN (1797-1867)Samuel was baptised 19 March 1797 at Papplewick St James, Notts. He married Elizabeth Hannah REDGATE at Nottingham St Nicholas on 9 Jun 1821. Samuel and Elizabeth had 7 children. There is more about the family of Samuel and Hannah GODKIN hereHenry GODKIN (1805-1836)Henry was baptised 8 December 1805 at Nottingham St Nicholas. He become a cow keeper taking over the business after his father died in 1828. He is listed as the registered voter in the 1830 voter, living at Coal Pit Lane (now Cranbrook St, running north of Goose Gate). In the 1841 census his mother Hannah and younger brother George were cow keepers at Coal Pit Lane. Henry did not marry. He died in Nottingham in 1836 and was buried on Christmas Day, 25 December 1836 at Nottingham St Mary.
Hannah GODKIN (1810-1861)Hannah was born in Nottingham on 1 April 1810. She emigrated to Australia in 1841, on the ship "English", along with her future husband Edward ASLING and her cousin Samuel GODKIN. There is more information about Hannah and her family here.George GODKIN (1814-1892)George GODKIN was born in 1814 and baptised on 13 May 1814 at Nottingham St Nicholas to George and Hannah GODKIN. Their residence at the time was Hounds Gate, Nottingham. He married Elizabeth OAKLEY in Nottingham St Paul on 17 June 1841. The witnesses were George BELTON and Elizabeth MERRIN. In the 1841 census George was listed as a cowkeeper living with his mother Hannah. On his marriage record he was a hay dealer. Elizabeth OAKLEY had been baptised at Radford St Peter on 15 March 1818 to James OAKLEY and Sarah (SHEPPARD). James was a lace hand or framework knitter. George and Elizabeth had 5 children:
In the 1851 census the family were living at Vernon Terrace (Back Road), which was on the northern boundary of The Park Estate, Nottingham. George was a hay dealer, cowkeeper and butcher, and he had his mother Hannah living with them. In 1861 they had moved to 39 George St, Radford and their oldest daughter Jane, now married to Augustus POOLE, was living with them. George was now a surveyor (of highways). In 1871 they were living in Leen Side and in 1881 and 1891 they were living at Ilkeston Rd, Bramcote. George was still a surveyor of highways. George GODKIN died at Bramcote on 16 January 1892. Probate was granted to his wife Elizabeth, valued at £339. Elizabeth GODKIN (née OAKLEY) died in Nottingham in March 1895. Both George and Elizabeth were burried at the Nottingham General Cemetery, plot 4349. Also buried in that plot are their daughters Jane and Ellen and grandson George POOLE. Of the five children of George and Elizabeth GODKIN: Jane GODKIN (1842-1928): was the only child to marry and have children. Her sister Ellen died aged 40 but a spinster, the others died in infancy. Jane GODKIN married Augustus POOLE in 1858 in Nottingham (Dec qtr 7b/455). Jane was aged about 17 and Augustus 19. Augustus Poole has an interesting history. He was the 8th of the 9 children of John and Harriett POOLE. He was born in 1833 (on the sea near England) while his parents were on their way to Calais in France. He was baptised in Calais on 21 July 1833. In the 1841 census John is listed as a Lace Seller, with 6 of his children not born in Nottingham. The 1851 census shows they were born in Calais, France - one of the large number of Nottingham families that moved to Calais to establish a lace trade there. The 1861 census records that Augustus was born "On the sea near England". Later censuses record his place of birth as Carrington, Notts. Augustus enlisted in the Army on 14 March 1853 for which he was paid a bounty of £5/15/6. He joined the 12th Royal Regiment of Lancers (Prince of Wales's Own). He saw service in the East Indies and the the Crimea. The 12th Lancers reinforced the Light Brigade after their disastrous charge at Balaclava. He was wounded at Crimea (a horse kicked him in the head leading to loss of sight in his left eye) and discharged medically unfit. His enlistment paper is shown here and his full Army file of 9 pages can be viewed as a PDF here courtesy of Fold3.com.
Augustus and Jane POOLE had two children: Elizabeth Alice POOLE (1859-1862) and George Augustus POOLE (1862-1932). The 1861 census shows Augustus, Jane and young Elizabeth living with Jane's parents at 36 George St (see above). In 1871 Elizabeth had died and Augustus, Jane and young George were living at 21 Welbeck St, Nottingham where they remained for the rest of their lives. Their son George became an art student and then an artist on his own account.
Augustus POOLE died in Nottingham in November 1905 and was buried at Nottingahm General Cemetery plot 0/3605. This appears to be a common plot as there are 3 other unrelated people in the same grave. Jane POOLE (née GODKIN) died in Nottingham in June 1908 and was buried at Nottingham General Cemetery on 20 June 1908 in plot 4349 along with her parents, sister Ellen and later her son George. Their son George Augustus POOLE was born in 1861 in Nottingham. He became a portrait artist. In the 1891 census he was visiting Samuel WILLIS, gentleman, at Belgrave Rd, Leicester. (But be aware that there were FIVE George Augustus POOLEs born in England between 1840 and 1900 and more than one of these became an artist!) We know that George visited America for a while. There is a shipping record for his return to Liverpool from New York on board the "Aurania" arriving 25 June 1893. George's career can be traced in the newspapers: George Augustus POOLE married Elizabeth Ann DICKENS at Basford in 1910.
Their time in Whitby did not last long, by 1932 they were back in Nottingham living at 3 Ella Place, West Bridgford. George died at this address on 26 Dec 1932 and his wife Elizabeth died there on 13 June 1933. Probate records show George left his modest estate to Elizabeth, but as they had no children Elizabeth left her estate to George's second cousin Bronnie WOLFE.
