THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDELIZABETH GODKIN (1795 – 1856)Elizabeth GODKIN was baptised on 15 February 1795 at Papplewick St James (Nottingham), the first child of Samuel GODKIN and Hannah FROGGATT. Hannah had been born in Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham in 1775. Samuel was a cowkeeper who was probably born outside Nottinghamshire, possibly Derbsyshire around 1765.
Marriage to Francis WOLFEElizabeth married Francis WOLFE on Christmas Day, 25 December 1828 at Nottingham St Mary. Francis had been born in Nottingham in 1802 to George WOLFE and Ann (WOOD) and baptised on 16 Sep 1802 at Nottingham St Mary.
Elizabeth and Francis had 6 children:
1841 & 1851 censusesIn the 1841 census Francis and Elizabeth were living at Milton St, Nottingham. By 1851 they were at 16 Melbourne St where Francis was still a cowkeeper.
Elizabeth WOLFE (née GODKIN) died in Nottingham in the June quarter 1856. Francis soon married again, to Sarah HUMBER in Nottingham in Mar 1859. Sarah was 10 years his junior. They were living at North St, Nottingham in 1861, together with Frances HUMBER. In 1871 the three were living at 65 Sherwood St.
Sarah WOLFE died in Nottingham in Jun quarter 1872. Francis was again a widower, but later that year he married Hannah Ann HATCH, a spinster working as a milliner from London. Hannah was 24 years his junior. They were recorded in the 1881 census at 43 Peas Hill Rd, Nottingham. Francis WOLFE died on 8 July 1883 at Peas Hill Rd. His third wife Hannah remained in Nottingham, in 1891 she was living at 57 Welbeck St. Hannah died at 80 Woodborough Rd Nottingham on 18 April 1897.
The children of Elizabeth (GODKIN) and Francis WOLFEEleanor WOLFE 1831-1906Eleanor was baptised at Nottingham St Mary on 8 March 1831. She was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with her family. By 1861 she was working as a shirt maker. She lived alone for most of her life, never marrying. She appears to be absent from the 1881 and 1891 censuses. She appears to have been difficult to live with. Her brother Reuben was convicted of assaulting her in 1857. By 1901 she had moved to 54 Park St, Nottingham where she died in unfortunate circumstances on 20 December 1906. Elizabeth WOLFE (1832-?)Elizabeth was baptised at Nottingham St Mary on 13 October 1832 to Francis and Elizabeth WOLFE. She was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with her family. In 1851 she was working as a school mistress.
Elizabeth WOLFE married John ALLEN at the Barker Gate Chapel, Nottingham on 6 July 1855. The marriage certificate confirms this as the correct marrage (there were several John Allens and 2 Elizabeth Wolfes in Nottingham at this time). The witnesses were Francis WOLFE (Elizabeth's father) and Anne FROGGITT (FROGGATT) her cousin.
After their marriage in 1855 John and Elizabeth ALLEN are difficult to find with certainty in the records. A large part of the problem, and one that has led other researchers astray, is the John and Elizabeth ALLEN with children John and Jane that are prominent in the 1861-1881 censuses. This John was a lace maker and Elizabeth a lace hand, whereas Elizabeth (WOLFE) had been a teacher and her husband John was a clothier's assistant - both occupations somewhat removed from lace making. I am confident that the ALLEN family with Jane and John is the John ALLEN who married Elizabeth MUNTON in Nottingham in Dec 1853. They had two children - Jane Elizabeth ALLEN registered Sep 1854 in Radford and John ALLEN registered Mar 1856 in Radford both with mother's maiden name of MUNTON. Clearly with Jane registered in 1854 she is likely not the daughter of Elizabeth (WOLFE) who married in 1855. But, we have a clue in a newspaper reference to the death of Elizabeth Wolfe ALLEN in Whitfield St, Newark on 29 August 1856. The middle name of "Wolfe" and the address at Whitfield St (which was John's address on the marriage certificate) confirm the relationship. Elizabeth had been born Newark on 5 May 1856.
This is the only birth I can attribute to John and Elizabeth. The birth of a John Francis ALLEN in Nottingham in Sep 1855 is a contender (mother's maiden name of ALLEN is no guide) but I doubt that Elizabeth was 8 months pregnant at the time of marriage in July 1855. Similarly the birth of Jane Elizabeth ALLEN in Radford in Sep 1854 (mother's maiden name of MUNTON) is not related. After the death of Elizabeth Wolfe ALLEN in 1856 the family vanishes. They were not living in Whitfield St, Newark in the 1861 census. They may have emigrated. Reuben WOLFE (1835-1902)Reuben WOLFE was baptised at Nottingham St Mary on 29 Jun 1835 at the same time as his (twin) sister Mary. He was recorded in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with his family. Reuben married Harriette Emily BALL (born in Congleton in 1841) in Nottingham in 1857. Reuben was aged 22 and Harriette was only 16. Reuben became a hosiery warehouseman. Reuben and Harriette had 9 children. There is more about Reuben and his family hereIsrael (Isaac) WOLFE (1837-1913)Israel (also known as Isaac) was born in Nottingham in 1837. By 1861 Israel was working as a clothing shopman in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Israel married Frances Emily RATHBONE at Birkenhead on 19 November 1863. Frances was born in Warwick in 1840 to Adie Cramp RATHBONE (a school teacher but by 1871 a banker's clerk) and Charlotte (HYDE); she was baptised at Warwick St Mary on 29 April 1840. Israel and Frances had 5 children. There is more about Israel and his family hereSamuel WOLFE (1939-1914)Samuel was born in Nottingham in 1839 to Francis WOLFE and Elizabeth (GODKIN). He married Frances UPTON in Nottingham in 1864. They had ten children. There is more about Samuel and his family hereBack to Froggatt Family History Last updated: 9 May 2022 |
