THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDISRAEL WOLFE (1837 – 1915)Israel Wolfe (also known as Isaac) was born to Francis WOLFE and Elizabeth (GODKIN) and was baptised on 30 November 1837 at Nottingham St Mary. Francis was a cowkeeper, born in Nottingham in 1802.
Israel WOLFE was recorded in the 1841 & 1851 censuses with the family in Mottingham. By 1861 he was working as a clothing shopman in Scarborough, Yorkshire.
Marriage to Frances RATHBONEIsrael married Frances Emily RATHBONE at Birkenhead on 19 November 1863. Frances was born in Warwick in 1840 to Adie Cramp RATHBONE (a school teacher but by 1871 a banker's clerk) and Charlotte (HYDE); she was baptised at Warwick St Mary on 29 April 1840. Israel and Frances had 5 children:
By the 1871 census Israel & Frances with Frances' brother Edward, a butcher, were living at 13 Clarendon St, Crumpsall .
Frances Emily WOLFE/RATHBONE died in Manchester in 1871 shortly after the 1871 census was taken. Her daughter Fanny was born around the same time so Frances may have died from complications from the birth. Travel to CanadaThe next record we have for Israel is overseas travel. Israel, daughter Fanny (aged 33) and another Fanny WOLFE (aged 40) boarded the ship "Victorian" in Liverpool on 27 April 1905 bound for Montreal and Quebec. Why Canada I wonder? The answer is simple - Israel's oldest daughter Florence and her family with Harold WRIGHT had emigrated to Souris, Manitoba in 1903. Israel took his youngest daughter Fanny, and his neice Fanny (WOLFE) to join them.
Death in CanadaThe trip to Canada was not a short excursion. After more than 7 years in Canada Israel WOLFE died in Boissevain, Manitoba on 6 January 1913 and was buried in the local cemetery. The Children of Israel and Frances WOLFEFlorence Edith WOLFE (1864-1940)Florence was born in Manchester on 18 June 1864. She was baptised in Manchester St Thomas on 21 October 1864. She married Harold John WRIGHT in Ormskirk Lancashire on 18 June 1892. Harold was a farmer. They had five children:
In the 1901 census Florence and family were living at Bleackley, Cheshire, with several farm labourers.
Emigration to CanadaOn 19 March 1903 Harold, Florence and their 4 surviving children set sail from Liverpool for Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada onboard the "TSS Bavarian". Note they were accompanied by William MADDOCK, who was recorded as a farm labourer working with them in the 1901 census.
By 1906 the family had settled in Souris, Manitoba. They were there in 1911 and 1916, but by 1916 their son Arthur was recorded as a farmer in his own right living next door.
Harold John WRIGHT died in Sourcis Manitoba on 11 November 1917. He was buried at the Boissevain and Marton Cemetery, Manitoba, near his father-in-law Israel WOLFE. His wife Florence Edith (WOLFE) remained in Souris living on the farm with her son Oswald. She died on 7 August 1940 and was buried with Harold. Of the Children of Harold and Florence WOLFE Oswald Rathbone WRIGHT (1893-1933) remained farming in Boissevain. He married Margaret (not sure of surname or date/place of marriage). Oswald died in Boissevain on 7 May 1933. Margaret later married Winfred Bradley CLIFFE on 28 December 1939 at Brandon. Winfred was a widower. Winfred died in 1967 and Margaret died in 1994, both are buried in Boissevain. Arthur Harold WRIGHT (1897-1961) married Eileen KEOWN on 21 March 1934 in Boissevain. He died 27 December 1961, she in 2004. George Barrow WRIGHT (1900-1990) married Margaret Kathleen TAYLOR on 10 June 1930 in Boissevain. George died in 1990 and Margaret in 1995. Emily Louisa WOLFE (1868-1946)Emily was born in Manchester on 27 February 1868. She was recorded with the family in the 1871-1891 censuses. Emily married Wallace WRIGHT on 24 April 1894 at the Congregational Church, Southport. Wallace was the brother of Harold John WRIGHT who had married Emily's sister Florence in 1892. Wallace and Emily had nine children:
In 1901 Wallace was a dairy farmer at Northenden, Bucklow, Cheshire. In 1911 he was managing a "couch business" at Northenden. In 1921 he was now a "coat ?" at 19 Gouldin Bvd, Withington with his 7 living children as well as his wife's nieces Marjorie and Kathleen WOLFE. In 1939 Wallace was alone at Ivy Cottage, Brookhouse Green, Cheshire while Emily with children Kate and Wallace were living at 9 Parrs Wood Rd, Manchester.
Emily Louisa WRIGHT/WOLFE died on 29 June 1946 at 9 Parrs Wood Rd Manchester (her address in the 1939 register). Her husband Wallace WRIGHT remained at Ivy Cottage but died at Cranford Lodge, Bexton Rd, Knutsford Cheshire on 30 September 1956. Probate was granted for both to their son Wallace Wolfe WRIGHT. Both are buried at Sale Brooklands Cemetery, Manchester. Note in 1948 the cottage had come up for sale subject to Wallace Wright remaining as a tenant.
Frederick Hyde WOLFE (1869-1952):Frederick was born in Manchester in early 1869 and baptised on 4 April 1869 at Cheetham Hill St Mark in Manchester. He was recorded with the family in the 1871-1891 censuses. Frederick married Kathleen (or Catherine) Cecilia O'KEEFFE (or O'KEEFE) in 1895. Kathleen was born in St Helens, Liverpool in 1871. Her parents were James O'KEEFE and Honora (O'GARRA) born in Dublin, Ireland but married in Liverpool in 1868 (they had 4 children - Kathleen, Mary Ellen (1876), James, (1879) and Benedict Joseph (1881)). Frederick and Kathleen had six children:
The census records tell a lot about Frederick's life. He married Kathleen in 1896, yet by the time of the 1901 census on 1 April their first 3 children had died and Marjorie was under 1 month old. By 1911 there were 2 more children, but Kathleen had now died and Frederick was living with his mother-in-law Honora O'KEEFE.
On 4 March 1915 Frederick married Florence ROCKLEY at Emmanuel Church in Nottingham. Florence had been born in Basford Nottingham on 7 January 1882 (7 Jan in 1939 register; 12 Jan on death record) to Charles ROCKLEY and Sarah Mary A PARKER. Charles and Sarah were born and married in Nottingham but soon after marriage moved away as Charles was a Foreman at large building sites. (There were 3 Florence ROCKLEY births in Basford in 1882-83 and the records soon become confused, especially with the Florence May ROCKLEY who was a sick nurse and never married, but the mother's names distinguish them apart.) In 1911 Florence was in London (6 Denbigh Place Pimlico) working as a florist. Frederick worked as a mens hosier and outfitter. In 1921 Frederick, Florence and his daughter Marjorie were living in Toxteth, Liverpool. Frederick worked as a hosier and men's outfitter. At about this time he bought the menswear business and worked on his own account at 6 The Quadrant, Lime St Liverpool. Unfortunately this did not last: After losing the shop in the middle of Liverpool, Frances and Florence moved to the Wirral, across the Mersey in Cheshire. In 1939 they were living above a block of shops at 9 Station Approach, Meols, Wirral, which is close to the coast.
Frederick Hyde WOLFE died on 9 December 1952 at 9 Station Approach, Meols. It would appear that Florence, who was 13 years younger, died on 25 April 1969 at 10 Cavendish St, Birkenhead. Frederick and Kathleen had three children who survived to adulthood: Marjorie WOLFE (1901-1972) was born 11 March 1901. She did not marry. In 1901 she was living with her O'KEEFE grandparents at 28 Woodville St, St Helens. She was still there, with her uncles in 1939. She died at St Helens in October 1972. Kathleen Rathbone WOLFE (1903-1987): was born 19 May 1903. She did not marry and also died at 28 Woodville St, St Helens on 20 February 1987. Rollo Hyde WOLFE (1905-1968): was born in 1905. He emigrated to Canada in 1927. He appears not to have married. He died in Burnaby, BC on 23 May 1968. Arthur WOLFE (1870-1879)Arthur was born in Manchester in 1870. He was recorded in the 1871 census, but died in 1879. Fanny WOLFE (1871-1932)Fanny was born in Manchester in 1871. She was recorded in the 1871 to 1901 censuses with her father Israel. In 1905 Israel, Fanny and fanny's cousin (also Fanny WOLFE) went to Canada to join Fanny's sister Florence on a farm in Boissevain, Manitoba. Israel died there in 1913. Fanny returned to England in 1920, arriving in Liverpool on 8 December from Montreal. She did not marry, living with her sister Emily (WRIGHT). Fanny died in Manchester early October 1932 and was buried in the Cheetham Hill Wesleyan Cemetery on 6 October 1932.
