Samuel WOLFE (1839-1914)Samuel was born in Nottingham in 1839 to Francis WOLFE and Elizabeth (GODKIN). He was recorded in the 1841-1861 censuses with the family in Nottingham. By 1861 Samuel had become a cowkeeper and milk seller like his father.
Samuel married Frances UPTON in Nottingham St Mary on 3 May 1864. Samuel was a butcher living ib Mansfield Rd, Nottingham.
Samuel and Frances WOLFE had ten children:
In 1871 Samuel was a milk seller, by 1881 a horse keeper and by 1891 he was a gardener. The family lived for around 20 years at 47 Marple St, off Woodborough Rd. The whole area was demolished in 1970.
Samuel WOLFE died in Nottingham in 1914 and was buried at the Church Rock Cemetery, Nottingham on 29 April 1914, grave "All Souls/9054". His wife Frances (UPTON) remained in Nottingham. In 1921 she was living at 165 Woodborough Rd with her daughters Fanny and Elizabeth and her brother John. She died there later in 1921 and was buried with her husband on 8 August 1921.

In 1905 Fanny joined her cousin (Fanny WOLFE) and her uncle Israel WOLFE for a voyage to Canada. She did not stay long as she is recorded in the 1911 census back with her parents at 2 Plowright St, Nottingham. There is a shipping record for a "Fannie WOLFE" returning to Liverpool from New York on the "Carmania" arriving on 24 November 1906.
Travel to New York and a marriageIn 1914 Fanny set sail overseas again, arriving at Ellis Island New York on 3 April 1914 onboard the SS Campania. Her occupation was "Lady's Companion" and her contact person in England was her father "Mr Wolfe, Woodborough Rd, Nottingham". Note that her father - Samuel WOLFE - died in late April 1914 just after Fanny had arrived in New York. She stated she was visiting her cousin Francis Harold WOLFE at 1276 Clay Ave, Bronx, New York (In fact Francis was Fanny's first cousin once removed). Fanny was accompanying a Dorothy Olive WHILES, a student aged 13, home address was of her grandmother Mrs GOTT of 5 Cooper St, Alfred St, Nottingham. Dorothy was to visit her father William WHILES at 212 East 54th St, New York. William had paid for her ticket. As Fanny's occupation was Lady's Companion it is likely that Fanny was actually accompanying Dorothy as a chaperone so Dorothy could visit her father. Two weeks after Fanny's arrival in New York and the safe delivery of young Dorothy WHILES to her father William, Fanny (and William WHILES) applied for a marriage licence (dated 15 April 1914). They married on 17 April 1914 in the Bronx, New York. William was aged 48 and Fanny was 49 years. But the marriage was short-lived.
