THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDJane Helen ASLING (1848-1915)The ASLING-GODKIN Family in Victoria, AustraliaIntroductionHannah GODKIN and Edward ASLING emigrated from Nottingham to Victoria on board the small sailing ship "England", arriving in Port Phillip (Melbourne) on 17 July 1841. A few months after their arrival in Melbourne Hannah GODKIN married Edward ASLING at St James Church on 10 January 1842. They had four children: Jane Helen was their third child. Jane Ellen (Helen) ASLING (1848-1915)Jane Ellen (or Helen) was born 13 May 1846 at Brighton, Melbourne, where the family had recently settled. She was baptised on 30 June 1868 at Melbourne St James. Jane married John William CROWLEY on 9 October 1865 at Dandenong. John William had been born in Tasmania on 28 April 1841 to Daniel CROWLEY and Catherine MAHONEY.
After marriage John and Jane moved to the Berwick/Narre Warren area where their 10 children were born:
John and Jane CROWLEY farmed at Berwick, mostly cattle and sheep, for the rest of their lives. John CROWLEY died in Berwick in late December 1898 aged 57 and was buried on 31 December 1898 at Berwick Cemetery plot Old Catholic 3-110-B alongside his infant son George Edward CROWLEY who had died 19 October 1891 aged 17 months. There is no headstone for either John or George. Jane Ellen died at Beaconsfield on 23 July 1915, aged 67. She was buried at Berwick Cemetery, plot Presb. 5-549-A. There is no headstone for her either.
The Children of John and Jane CROWLEYJane CROWLEY (1867-1942)Jane was the first child of John and Jane CROWLEY, born in 1867 at Berwick. She married Edward (Ted) BATTERSBY in 1889. They owned an orchard at Narre Warren known as "Granite Grove". They had 4 children:
In 1914 Jane and Edward celebrated their Silver Wedding at Granite Grove.
On 15 Feb 1926 a bushfire at Narre Warren destroyed several nearby properties by Granite Grove was saved. It is said Jane recieved a terrible shock from this event from which she never proprly recovered,and died at Granite Grove on 5 Dec 1926. She was interred at Berwick Cemetery.
Edward continued to farm at Grante Grove. He died there on 7 October 1942 and was interred with his wife Jane at Berwick Cemetery. There is no marker on the grave.
Of the Children of Jane and Edward BATTERSBY: Ellen Jane BATTERSBY (1891-1961): was born in 1891 at Berwick. She married Matthew James RANDLE in 1912. Matthew was a labourer but later worked on the railways. They had 4 children: Phyllis May RANDLE (1912-1933); William Allan RANDLE (24 Jan 1915 - 23 Jun 2000); Herbert Dudley RANDLE 30 May 1917 - 1 Nov 1999) and Jean RANDLE (15 Dec 1919- 14 Dec 2009).Ellen Jane died at Melbourne in 1961. Matthew died at Ferntree Gully in 1973. Herbert David BATTERSBY (1895-1917): was born in 1895 at Narre Warren. He enlisted in the Australian Army and saw nearly 12 months of service with the 39th Infantry Battalion. He died of wounds (loss of right leg) on 29 May 1917 and was buried in the Stand Military Cemetery, Hainaut, Belgium. Doris May BATTERSBY (1904-1984): was born in 1904 at Berwick. In 1931 she married George Frederick AURISCH, a farm labourer from Berwick. They had one child. George died 22 Sep 1975 and Doris on 12 July 1984. Both were cremated at Springvale Crematorium.
Catherine CROWLEY (1869-1928)Catherine was born at Berwick in 1869 to John and Jane CROWLEY. She married Louis Joseph EDEBOHLS in 1889. They had 3 children.
Louis EDEBOHLS is listed as a farmer at Narre Warren in 1903 and then between 1913 and 1919 listed as a labourer in Berwick. He returned to Narre Warren as a farmer in 1924. Catherine EDEBOHLS died in July 1928 at East Melbourne and was buried at Harkaway Cemetery. Louis Joseph Edebohls died 11 July 1931 at Berwick.
Of the Children of Louis and Catherine EDEBOHLS: Bessie Jane EDEBOHLS (1895-1970): was born in 1895 at Berwick. She married Frank Clive HILL in 1922. Frank had recently been divorced from his first wife Agnes (MUTTON) whom he had abandoned in 1920. There appears to be no children from the marriage. Frank was a bootmaker in early life, worked at a variety of jobs but returned to this trade. After marriage in 1922 Frank and Bessie changed their names to Bessie and Charles WILSON. Frank/Charles is not in the electoral rolls after 1918 but in 1928 he and Bessie were living at Cranbourne Rd, Hampton Park (Berwick) and Frank was again a bootmaker. They can be traced in the rolls until 1968 when they were living at 2269 Dandenong Rd. Bessie Jane died at Cheltenham (late of Springvale North) on 28 January 1970 and was buried on 2 Feb at Springvale Cemetery. The death notice inserted in the newspaper by Frank indicates they were now known as WILSON, and he was still living at 2269 (now Princes Highway). After 1968 Frank/Charles disappears from the electoral roll. It is not clear when or where he died.
Leslie John EDEBOHLS (1899-1972): was born in 1899 at Berwick. He became a carpenter. Leslie married Lila Rosamund HARGREAVES in 1942. They had one son - Laurence Raymond EDEBOHLS. Leslie died at Dandenong in 1972 and Lila in 1986. They are commemorated at Berwick Cemetery.
William CROWLEY (1873-1959)William was born at Berwick on 6 Sep 1873. William married Edith Sarah HARDY on 15 August 1900 at Clyde St Paul. They had 8 children:
William initially worked as a labourer (on farms) but by 1924 was himself farming at Pakenham where the family would remain. In 1950 William and Edith celebrated their Golden Wedding and in 1953 William his 80th birthday. William died at Pakenham on 23 January 1959. Edith died 10 November 1964. Both were cremated at Springvale Crematorium.
Of the Children of William and Edith CROWLEY: Norris William CROWLEY (1895-1970): was born 23 April 1902 at Cranbourne, Vic. He married Amy Elizabeth JACKSON in 1935. They had 3 children: Lorna Avis, Doreen Fay and Lynette Joyce. Norris worked on the family farm in Pakenham, later moving to Cardinia as a farmer and then to Koo-wee-rup Rd at Pakenham East. Norris died 7 March 1964 at Pakenham and Amy died 1968 in Prahran, Melbourne. Theodore John CROWLEY (1895-1970): was born 29 Sep 1903 at Berwick. He married Beryl Isabel Lucy GRANT in 1930. They had 6 children. Theodore worked on the family farm at Pakenham but later moved to a farm on Koo-Wee-Rup Rd. Tragedy struck the family in 1935 when their oldest child Keith Theodore fell down a well and drowned on 8 March 1935. Theodore died at Pakenham on 10 Feb 1984. Beryl died on 15 August 1992. Both were buried with son Keith at Pakenham Cemetery.
Alma Edith CROWLEY (1905-2005): was born 17 July 1905 at Cranbourne, Vic. She married Herbert WILLIS in 1933. Herbert was a herd tester at Pakenham East but by 1942 was an engine driver living at Drouin. By 1954 they had moved to Mildura. Later they retired to Hazel Rd, Bruthen. Herbert died in 1982. Alma died 3 August 2005 at Bendigo, just after her 100th birthday. Alma and Herbert had 4 children: Judith Catherine; Zenna Helen; Diana Hazel and Herbert Rex. Irene Maud CROWLEY (1907-2004): was born 30 April 2007 at Pakenham. She married John Alexander Rose in 1932. They had 5 children: Noel (1932-1932); Peter (1935-1991); John (1936-1963); David and Heather Irene. John ROSE was a farmer at Pakenham. By 1954 John had given up farming and become a builder, living at King George Parade, Dandenong. John ROSE died 1 November 1976. Irene then moved to Bruthen (presumably to be near her sister Alma). At some point Irene then married Cecil Martin HEARD and they moved to Lakes Entrance from where she died on 21 November 2004. Cecil HEARD died in 2005. Allan Frank CROWLEY (1909-1985): was born 18 June 1909 at Pakenham. In 1931 Allan was a labourer living at Koo-wee-rup Rd, Pakenham. Allan married Elsie Maud HIBBERSON on 24 June 1933 at the Presbyterian Church, Pakenham. Allan and Elsie had two children: Dawn Jean (0934-2001) and Jessie Ray. Allan Frank CROWLEY died 12 Feb 1985 at Pakenham. Elsie died 29 May 2002 at Pakenham.
Eric Hardy CROWLEY (1913-2001): was born 4 Feb 1913 at Pakenham. Eric worked on the farm at Pakenham but later became a truck driver and later still a council employee. He married Olive Latimer THOMPSON in 1944. They had 4 children. By 1967 Eric and Olive had moved to 3 Oliver Ct, Wangaratta where they remained until at least 1980. Later they moved to Ballarat where Olive died on 11 Dec 1989 and Eric on 28 May 2001. Both were interred at Ballarat Cemetery plot Lawn.H.16.13 Hazel Florence CROWLEY (1914-1977): was born 8 July 1914 at Box Hill, Melbourne. She married Allan KENNEDY on 23 Sept 1933 at Berwick. Allan was an orchardist at Pakenham. They had 7 children. Allan and Hazel divorced in 1962. Hazel later married Francis Joseph William SELLENGER in 1963. Hazel died 31 March 1977 at Melbourne East. Malvern CROWLEY (1876-1944)Malvern was born in Malvern, Melbourne in 1876. He moved with the family to a farm at Berwick. He worked as a farm labourer and farmer all his life.In 1939, aged 63 he married Doris (Dorothy) Ilene LOVERIDGE. Dord was aged 37. They had 5 years together before Malvern died on 11 October 1944 at the Dandenong and District Hospital. He was interred at Dandenong Cemetery. Doris died in 1955 at Footscray, Melbourne. They did not have any children.
Minnie CROWLEY (1879-1949)Minnie was born at Berwick in 1879. She married Joseph SUTTON on 12 April 1905 at Dandenong. They had 4 daughters, all with Crowley as their middle name: Alma Crowley (16 Mar 1906-5 Sep 1969); Mavis Crowley (1910-2 Jun 1975); Lorna Crowley (5 Mar 1912-14 Aug 1988); and Elva Crowley (1914-7 Jul 1979). Around 1916 they moved to Upper Ferntree Gully where Joseph worked as a labourer. Around 1931 it appears Minnie and Joseph started living separately. In 1931 Minnie moved in with two of her daughters, Mavis and Alma who lived at 144 Clarendon St, Melbourne. Both daughters were working as waitresses. In 1935 Minnie moved to 28 Alma Rd, St Kilda West and then in 1936 moved in with daughters Elva and Lorna at 18 Princes St, St Kilda West. Minnie Sutton died at Iririki, Kew, on 4 October 1949 aged 70. Joseph Sutton died on 26 January 1951 at the home of his sister, Mrs Frank Picket at Lower Ferntree Gully, age 79.
Of the Children of Joseph and Minnie SUTTON: Alma Crowley SUTTON (1906-1969): was born 16 March 1906 at Scoresby, Vic. When aged about 18 Alma's life became entwined with Francis Hugh Munro BOLTON, a married man. BOLTON had married Freda Agnes LAUER in 1922 and they had two chldren. Around 1924 Bolton met Alma Crowley SUTTON and began a relationship, but Freda did not detect the affair until around 1933. She filed for divorce in 1935 which was granted. Meanwhile Alma gave birth to a boy, John SUTTON, on 10 March 1935. The birth was registered to a Mr & Mrs SUTTON (maiden name SALTER) supposedly married in Sydney in 1934. These details proved false and BOLTON was arrested. After the divorce Alma and Francis BOLTON lived together, although they do not appear to have married. They are listed in the 1949 through 1967 electoral rolls as Francis and Alma Crowley BOLTON. Alma died in Melbourne on 5 September 1969. Francis BOLTON died on 19 June 1973. Mavis Crowley SUTTON (1910-1975): was born in 1910 at Berwick, Vic. She married Ernest Alfred KELLY, a chef, in 1934. Ernest died in 1953. Mavis died 2 June 1975 at Ormond, Vic. Lorna Crowley SUTTON (1910-1975): was born in 5 March 1912 at Berwick, Vic. In a life that paralleled her older sister Alma, Lorna's life became entwined with Gordon TOMLIN, a married man, in about 1932. TOMLIN had married Dora Mary HOBDEN in 1929 and they had one child in 1931. Around this time Lorna became involved with TOMLIN. Dora filed for a divorce which was granted in May 1937. Later that year Lorna married Gordon TOMLIN. There were no children from the relationship, but it did not last. Lorna filed for divorce which was granted. Gordon TOMLIN then married Beryl Victoria ALEXANDER in 1942 (but she filed for divorced in about 1950). Lorna then married Frank William DENNISON in 1943. Frank had been born in Canada in 1912. There were no children from this marriage either. Fank William DENNISON died at Monbulk, Vic on 4 June 1986. Lorna Crowley SUTTON/TOMLIN/DENNISON died at Fern Tree Gully on 14 August 1988. Elva Crowley SUTTON (1914-1979): was born in 1914 at Berwick, Vic. She married George Arthur Sinclair TAYLOR in 1944. George appears to have been the "boy next door", living at 30 Alma St Melbourne when Elva was living with her mother at 28 Alma St. Around1960 Elca and George moved to 117 Erskine St, Melbourne where they remained. Elva died 7 July 1979 and George in 1985. Norman CROWLEY (1881-1953)Norman was born at Dandenong on 18 June 1881. He became a farmer with his brother John, but joined the Army on 2 April 1916 and was posted to the 2nd Pioneer Battalion. By November 1916 he was in France involved in railway construction and tunnelling. He returned to Australia in 1920. In 1923 Norman married Charlotte WIDLAKE. [Charlotte was a widow, whose husband William Henry WIDLAKE had died in 1919 at Dandenong. William had married Charlotte HANN at Yeovil, Somerset, England in 1910, William being a greengroccer in Bristol. William had arrived in Melbourne on the "Essex" early in 1913 and Charlotte had followed him on the "Norseman" later in 1913. They had farmed at Mt Waverley, near Dandenong where they had one child - Elsie May WIDLAKE born in 1917.] After marriage, Norman and Charlotte farmed at at Dalmore, near Koo-Wee-Rup where they had one son - Norman. In 1934 their barley crop was ruined by drought and a plague of crickets, so they moved to a dairy farm at Bullarto Rd, Clyde. Around 1949 they retired and moved to A'Becketts Rd, Narre Warren North. Norman died at Alfred Hospital Melbourne on 29 May 1953. In 1963 Charlotte was still living at A'Becketts Rd. She died in 1964.
David CROWLEY (1884-1940)David was born 1884 born at Dandenong. He worked with his brothers on various farms. It appears that David did not marry, although there is marriage record for a David CROWLEY marryimg Bridget Agnes O'BRIEN in 1913. David died at Cranbourne on 16 May 1940 and is buried at Berwick Cemetery.
Bessie CROWLEY (1888-1952)Bessie Crowley was born in 1888 in Dandenong. In 1920 she married Eric Roy Addison soon after he was divorced (on 10 Feb 1920). He married his first wife, Alma Louisa SIMPSON, in 1915 in Korumburra. He was a rabbit trapper and used to be away from home for long intervals and objected to his wife’s conduct. Eric later became a fencing contractor. They did not have any children. By 1942 Bessie and Eric were living apart. Bessie died 20 February 1952 at Fitzroy, Melbourne. Eric ADDISON died in 1958.
