THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDGeorge Edward ASLING (1846-1934)The ASLING-GODKIN Family in Victoria, AustraliaIntroductionHannah GODKIN and Edward ASLING emigrated from Nottingham to Victoria on board the small sailing ship "England", arriving in Port Phillip (Melbourne) on 17 July 1841. A few months after their arrival in Melbourne Hannah GODKIN married Edward ASLING at St James Church on 10 January 1842. They had four children: George Edward was their second child. George Edward ASLING (1846-1934)George was born 24 May 1846 at Brighton, Melbourne, where the family had recently settled on a farm. He was baptised on 1 October 1846 at Melbourne St James. George married Margaret NEVILLE on 27 Sept 1869 at Berwick. Margaret had been born on 4 July 1869 in Melbournje to James Neville and Bridget (RYAN).
After marriage George and Margaret moved to Dandenong where their 3 children were born:
Margaret ASLING became ill with a lung disease, probably TB and within 6 months she died on 13 February 1874 in Elsternwick, Melbourne. That left George a widower with 3 young children. Margaret was a part-owner in the farm, but without a Will George had to apply for a Letter of Administration for her estate.
George soon married Sarah Martha WEBB at Fitzroy on 24 Dec 1874 at Gertrude St, Fitzroy. Sarah appears to have been born in St Pancras London in 1854, probably to John WEBB and Mary Ann Amelia (BELCHER). After marriage but prior to 1881 George and Sarah moved to the property at Narre Warren that had belonged to George's father. George and Sarah had 7 children:
The farm at Narre Warren was named "Farnsfield".It was swampy and required drainage for which the Council paid. George became involved in local community activites, and was instrumental in acquiring the land and building a Mechanics Institute and Library that was opened in October 1888. Sarah Martha ASLING (née WEBB) died at Farnsfield on 20 January 1923. She was buried at Berwick Cemetery, plot Presb. 5-246-B on which there is a simple memorial. George Edward died at Farnsfield on 21 November 1934 and was also buried at Berwick Cemetery, plot Presb. 4-145-B. There is no headstone for George.
After his death, George's family decided to sell Farnsfield. It was advertied in 1935.
The Children of George and Margaret ASLINGEdward ASLING (1869-1961)Edward ASLING was the first child of George and Margaret, born 25 December 1869 at Dandenong. He married Elizabeth Ann MEADE on 2 May 1894 at Dandenong. They had 5 children:
The family moved to Narre Warren where by 1910 Edward had established an orchard of 15 acres (mostly apples. In 1926 Edward was charged with selling apples infected by codling moth for which he was fined £3. In 1946 electricity reached Narre Warren: Edward as the oldest resident was given the honour of switching it on. Edward ASLING died at Narre Warren North on 25 January 1961, aged 91. His wife Margaret (MEADE) had died in Narre Warren on 6 March 1941 aged 75.
Of the children of Edward and Elizabeth Ann ASLING George Edward ASLING (1895-1943): was born 28 March 1895 at Narre Warren, Victoria. He married Mary Alma HILL at Dandenong on 4 June 1927. They had 3 children: Dorothy Elizabeth (29 Jun 1928-); Margery Joan (1 Sep 1929-) and Patricia. George Edward ASLING died at Narre Warrern on 25 April 1943 after an illness lasting 6 years. He was aged 48. Mary Alma ASLING survived her husband by 52 years, dying at Narre Warren on 1 August 1995.
Margaret Alice ASLING (1897-1925): was born in 1897 at Narre Warren. She married Thomas Evan JONES in 1921. They had one son - Evan David JONES (18 Mar 1922 - 29 April 2003). Margaret died at their property "Landderwen" on 15 July 1925. Her husband Thomas later married Margaret's aunt (Alice ASLING - youngest daughter of George ASLING and Sarah WEBB). Thomas died in Dandenong on 16 June 1964 and is buried at Springvale Cemetery. His second wife Alice (ASLING) died ar Berwick on 7 September 1972. Their son Evan married Janet Mary McINNES in 1947. They had 4 children. Evan died at Mt Gambier on 29 April 2002.
Henry ASLING (1899-1921): along with his twin brother Charles was born 24 Feb 1899 at Narre Warren. Henry enlisted during the First World War on 17th August 1918 at the age of 19. He embarked aboard a Troop Ship for England with the 17th General Service Reinforcements, however it was recalled during to the Armistice. He became seriously ill with influenza and was placed in quarantine in Sydney. He was later diagnosed as also having TB, from which he died on 3 October 1921.
Charles ASLING (1899-1921): along with his twin brother Henry was born 24 Feb 1899 at Narre Warren. Charles also enlisted in the AIF and as with his brother was recalled to Australia due to the Armistice. Charles married Edna Knighton SMITH on 22 Jan 1927. They had 3 children: Audrey, Raymond and Lynette (8 Sep 1940-8 Mar 1941). Charles died at Northcote, on 12 Aug 1950. His wife Edna died on 25 Feb 1955. Both are commemorated at Fawhner Memorial Park. George William ASLING (1871-1952)George William (or William George) ASLING was in born in 1871 to George and Margaret. He married Agnes Mary HOBBS in 1902. They had 5 children:
In the electoral rolls from 1903 to 1909 William was working as a labourer in Narre Warren but in 1912 he is listed as a farmer at Narre Warren. By 1924 they had moved to Mooroolbark where William was a labourer again. in 1926 they had moved to Drouin where William and son William Neville were labourers. Later at Drouin William again tried farming. William and Agnes remained in the Drouin and Warragul area. William died at Warragul as the reuslt of an accident on 28 August 1952 and Agnes in 1961. They are interred at the Warragul Cemetery, plot COE-STN-172.
Of the children of William George and Agnes Mary ASLING William Neville ASLING (1903-1990): was born 1903 at Berwick, Victoria. In 1926 he was living in Drouin with his parents and working as a labourer. He married Nellie ADDICOTT in 1926. I appears they did not have any children. Around 1931 thery moved to Mildura. By the early 1950s they had moved to Warragul and William was working for the railways. William died at Warragul on 15 Dep 1990 aged 87. Nellie died at Frankston on 15 February 1993 aged 88. Allan John ASLING (1906-1989): was born 1906 at Berwick, Victoria. He took up farming at Drouin with his siblings. It appears Allan never married. He died at Drouin on 22 July 1989 and is commemorated at Warragul Cemetery.
Eric George ASLING (1908-1994): was born 24 Dec 1908 at Dandenong, Victoria. In 1931 he was living at Drouin with his parents and working as a labourer. Eric married Dorothy Mary BAKER in Warragul on 31 March 1934. Dorothy had been born on 17 June 1914 at Heckney Leicestershire to Daniel BAKER and Mary WOOD. Eric was now working as a drover. Eric and Dorothy had four children: Keith Francis, Noel, Ronald Eric and Ian. Eric George died at Warragul on 15 May 1994. His wife Dorothy died a few months later, on 16 October 1994, also at Warragul. Una Margaret ASLING (1912-1982): was born 1912 at Dandenong, Victoria. She lived with her mother and brother Allan at Drouin until her mother died in 1961 and then it appears she remained as housekeeper for Allan. Una died at Drouin on 11 August 1982.
Margaret Agnes ASLING (1873-1898)Margaret Anges ASLING was the third and last child of George and Margaret, born in 1873 at Dandenong. There is little more known abou her life. Margaret died at Dandenong (probably Narre Warren) on 1 August 1898.She was interred in the NEVILLE family plot at Dandenong Cemetery (her mother's family).
The Children of George Edward ASLING and his second wife Sarah Martha WEBBFrederick John ASLING (1877-1964)Frederick John ASLING was the first son of George and Sarah, born 8 April 1877 at Dandenong. He married Bertha ADAMS in 1904. They had two children:
Frederick was a gardener. He lived at Narre Warren all of his live, dying there on 9 January 1964.His wife Bertha had died at Narre Warren on 19 June 1959. Both are buried at Box Hill Cemetery, Melbourne, plot CoE-139-0043. Of the children of Frederick John and Bertha ASLING Alice ASLING (1908-2002): was born 1908 at Doncaster, Victoria. She married David Picton PALMER in 1937. David had been born in 1908 to Arthur PALMER nad Eunice (EVANS). David and Alice had four children: Janet, Linda, Eileen and Valerie. David died on 20 January 1971. Alice died 15 April 2002 and was buried at Springvale Cemetery, Dandenong. Leslie Frank ASLING (1912-1990): was born 7 March 1912 at Berwick, Victoria. In the 1934-1937 electoral rolls Leslie was recorded as a school teacher living at Narre Warren. He married Jean Florence SHEARER on 19 June 1940. By 1942 Leslie and Jean were living at Ferny Creek (a few km north of Narre Warren) working as a fruiterer. Leslie and Jean had a daughter Suzanne (1941-2014). By 1946 Leslie was now a public service clerk but living alone in central Melbourne. He remained there until he died on 16 August 1990, and was interred at Springvale Cemetery, Dandenong. Meanwhile In 1946 Jean and her daughter Suzanne were living at the ASLING family farm "Farnsfield" on Heatherton Rd. Jean and Suzanne were still recorded on Heatherton Rd in 1977. In 1980 they were living at 997 Heatherton Rd. Jean died 17 August 2002. Suzanne never married and died 25 January 2014.
Henry (Harry) ASLING (1878-1950)Henry ASLING was born 21 December 1878 in Narre Warren, Dandenong and baptised at Narre Warren on 19 January 1879. He married Elizabeth Ann TIMMINS in 1906. Elizabeth was born in 1881 in Hotham Vic to Edward TIMMINS and Sarah Elizabeth (SPICE). They had four children:
After marriage Henry (now known as Harry) and Elizabeth moved to Doncaster where he was a labourer. Around 1914 they moved back to Narre Warren where Harry tried farming. His home was threatened by bushfire in 1945.
In 1947 Harry’s property in Logan Park Rd, Narre Warren North was bought by the State Rivers and Water Commission who controlled the nearby Lysterfield Reservoir. Harry auctioned off all his farming assets. but continued farming in the district. Harry ASLING died on 12 December 1950 at Gilmore St, Belgrave South. Elizabeth continued living at Narre Warren until her death on 28 July 1960 at Belgrave South. Both were interred at Berwick Cemetery but there is no headstone.
Of the Children of Harry and Elizabeth ASLING Arthur Roy ASLING (1908-1987) was born in Doncaster Victoria in 1908. In the 1931 electoral roll Arthur was a labourer living in Lysterfield. Arthur married Phyllis May LOVERIDGE in 1935. They had 3 children: Brian, Nola and Naomi. By 1942 they had moved to Belgrave South where they remained. Arthur died in June 1987 and was buried on 19 June at Springvale Cemetery. Phylluis died 21 August 2008. Mavis Jean ASLING (1910-1960) was born in Doncaster Victoria in 1910. Mavis married Douglas McKENZIE in 1936. They had 2 children: Donald and Patricia. Mavis died 24 June1960 and was interred at Berwick Ccemetery. Douglas died 28 March 1977 at Heidelberg.
Jack ASLING (1913-1980) was born in Doncaster Victoria on 7 March 1913. He married Jean MURRAY in 1944. They appear to had had only 1 child - Nancy. jack worked as a labourer and drainer. In 1968 they were living at 9 High St, Ferntree Gully. Jack and Jean subsequently moved to Dunolly, Bendigo where Jack died on 4 Feb 1980 and Jean in 1995. Ronald Francis ASLING (1918-1964) was born in Dandenong Victoria on 25 Jan 1918. He married May Gwen A'VARD on 27 Sep 1939 at Dandenong St James. Ronald was working as a labourer and May was living in Emerald. They had 7 children. In 1954 through to 1963 they were living at Caroline Cres, Emerald. Ronald died 19 June 1964 at Fitzroy. Gwen May died on 27 Oct 2013.
Arthur ASLING (1881-1932)Arthur ASLING was born 29 January 1881 at Narre Warren, Dandenong and baptised 20 February 1881 at Narre Warren. In 1905 Arthur was working at Narre Warren aws a labourer but by 1914 was a farmer. Arthur married Florence Ethel SEYMOUR in 1925. Arthur was aged 44 and Florence was 38. They did not have any children. Arthur took over the Asling family farm of "Farnsfield" at some stage. He died there suddenly on 5 May 1932 and was buried at Berwick Cemetery. Florence later moved into Melbourne and died at Essendon on 20 January 1972.
Ada ASLING (1884-1971)Ada ASLING was born in 1884 at Narre Warren, Dandenong. On 9 November 1911 she married Louis Wilhelm SCHNEIDER at St John's Church, Narre Warren.
Ada and Louis had 2 children: Leonard Francis (1912-1980) and John Louis (1916-1986). Louis and Ada farmed at Narre Warren on the property named "St Leonards". Louis died suddenly while out driving in his car on 3 January 1953. He was interred at Berwick Cemetery. Ada remained in Narre Warren, dying there in February 1971. She was interred at Berwick Cemetery 19 February 1971.
Of the Children of Louis and Ada SCHNEIDER Leonard Francis SCHNEIDER (1912-1980) was born in Narre Warren in 1912. He becam a farmer at Narre Warren. He married Nancy McDonald BROOME some time between 1963 and 1968, at that time Nancy was living with her mother Olive at 26 Burnett St, Mitcham, but she was originally from Emerald. After 1968 Leonard and Nancy moved to a farm at Londrigan, east of Wangaratta.They did not have any children. Leonard died at Wangaratta Hospital on 23 August 1980 and was buried at Eldorado Cemetery. Nancy died 4 July 2019 at Wangaratta. The obituary in The Age reads "Schneider, Nancy. 20/3/1926 - 4/7/2019. A gregarious, sociable lady passed away among family and friends in the early hours of Thursday. Much loved Wife of Len (dec), Sister of Phyllis and Geoff, Aunt of Anne, Kim, Karen and Jennifer (dec), Great Aunt of Katie and Benjamin, Great Great Aunt of Maggie."
John (Jack) Louis SCHNEIDER (1918-1986) was born in Narre Warren in 1916. He too became a farmer at Narre Warren. John married Ellen Elizabeth (Nell) WILTSHIRE in 1942. After retuning from the army in 1945 John and Nell moved to the family farm of St Leonards at Narre Warren. They had one son - Peter William. Later John and Nell moved to a farm at Packenham and later still they moved to Helidon, west of Brisbane, Queensland. Nell died on 17 August 1986 and John died 4 weeks later on 21 September 1986. Both are buried at Helidon Cemetery, Queensland.
Jane ASLING (1885-1962)Jane ASLING was born 13 July 1885 at Narre Warren, Dandenong and baptised at Narre Warren St John's on 23 Sept 1885. She married William Byfield GREEN, a salesman and draper, in 1918. In 1926 they were living at 15 Burke Rd, Malvern East; they were still at this address in 1954. They appear not to have had any children. Jane GREEN died 18 July 1962 at Melbourne. William Byfield GREEN died 18 August 1962 at East Malvern and was cremated at Springvale Cemetery. Alice ASLING (1889-1972)Alice ASLING was born in 1889 at Narre Warren, Dandenong. She married Thomas Evan Jones in 1928: Alice was aged 38 and Thomas was 30. Thomas had been widowed in 1925 when his wife Margaret Alice JONES had died. Margaret was the daughter of Edward ASLING and Margaret NEVILLE so was Alice's neice. Thomas JONES continued to farm at Narre Warren until his death on 16 June 1964. Alice died at Berwick on 7 Sep 1972, aged 84. Both are burued at Springvale Cemetery, Berwick.
