THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDAlice Hannah ASLING (1850-1932)The ASLING-GODKIN Family in Victoria, AustraliaIntroductionHannah GODKIN and Edward ASLING emigrated from Nottingham to Victoria on board the small sailing ship "England", arriving in Port Phillip (Melbourne) on 17 July 1841. A few months after their arrival in Melbourne Hannah GODKIN married Edward ASLING at St James Church on 10 January 1842. They had four children: Jane Helen was their third child. Alice Hannah ASLING (1850-1932)Alice was born 26 November 1850 at Brighton, Melbourne, where the family had recently settled. Alice married Samuel Edward WINTER in 1870 in Melbourne. Samuel had been born in Brighton, Melbourne on 10 July 1849 to Samuel Edward WINTER and Mary HORSWOOD. He was baptised in Brighton on 26 August 1849.
The HORSWOOD name suggests Samuel's mother Mary was related to the William HORSWOOD who had married Alice's oldest sister (Elizabeth Maria ASLING) in Melbourne in 1863. Indeed there are many family trees that have Mary as the oldest sister of William HORSWOOD. However Mary was born in Nottingham around 1815 and William was born in 1831, making this connection unlikely.
After marriage Alice and Samuel moved to Narre Warren and farmed one of the blocks owned by Alice's father Edward ASLING. They had 6 children:
Alice and Samuel remained at Narre Warren but Samuel became a general works contractor to the local council. It appears he underquoted for his work as he was declared bankrupt in 1874, the causes being undercosting and the sale of a horse that later proved lame. Samuel later contrated to the Council again for general works. He also was awarded a mail contract which he operated from around 1912 to 1926. Samuel died at Powlett St, Melbourne East on 31 July 1926. Alice Hannah remained at Narre Warren North, dying there on 2 March 1932. Both are buried at Dandenong Cemetery.
The Children of Samuel and Alice WINTERSamuel Edward WINTER (1872-1954)Samuel Edward WINTER (the third generation with this name) was born in 1872 at Brighton, Melbourne. He married Emmeline (also Emily) Mary SHORTHOUSE in 1904. Samuel worked as a tram driver. In 1905 they were living at 6 Church St, Abbortsford, Melbourne.. They had 1 child:
In 1931 Samuel, Emily and Albert were living at 8 Church St. Samuel was a "gripman" (tram driver) and Albert was a salesman.Emmeline Mary WINTER died at 8 Church St, Abbortsford on 29 October 1938. By 1954 Samuel had moved to 49 Victoria Rd, but son Albert was elsewhere. Samuel Edward WINTER died at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne on 15 October 1954. Of the son of Samuel and Emmeline WINTER Albert WINTER (1905-1988) was born 18 January 1905 (although his birth record does not appear in the Victoria Birth Register). Albert worked as a salesman until he enlisted in the Australian Army, his enrolment giving his date of birth as 18 January 1905 and his next of kin as Samuel WINTER. After the war, Albert returned to living with his father, now at 19 Victoria Rd, Northcote. Albert was now a "clerk". It appears that Albert never married. He moved to Bendigo, where he died in 1988. Charles Robert WINTER (1874-1933)Charles Robert was born at Berwick in 1874. He lived all of his life at Narre Warren North, working as a farmer and local contractor. He did not marry. Charles died at a private hospital in Dendenong on 4 November 1933 and interred at the Dandenong Cemetery with his parents Samuel and Alice (see their headstone above).

Aubrey married Zoe Blanche Kay SOUPER at Temora, NSW in 1945. The newspapers tell us Zoe was a bank teller at Temora and Aubrey was a RAAF chaplain.
In 1948 Aubrey obtained his first parish, at Bacchus Marsh (between Melbourne and Ballarat). In 1953 Aubrey married Patricia Gayer WILSON. It is not clear what happened to Zoe, but she married Robert Edward LOCKARD in 1948 in Mosman, Sydney, suggesting they divorced in that year.
