The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandSamuel Goodliff RICHMOND (1814-1871) - Eldest son of Elizabeth GOODLIFFE and Samuel RICHMONDSamuel Goodliff (always without the last 'e') was born 22 May 1814 at Barowden in the County of Rutland. He was the first child of Elizabeth and Samuel RICHMOND. His birth was later recorded in the records of the Morcott and Barrowden Baptist Chapel on 1 December 1817 along with her siblings.
Samuel was born 22 May 1814 at Barrowden. He married Mary Ann TOWNLEY in Thrapston on 24 May 1839. Samuel was 25 and working in London as a wheelwright. Mary claimed she was 20 but was actually 3 weeks short of her 20th birthday.
Samuel and Mary had three children, all born in London, before Mary died and was buried at Brompton Cemetery, London on 30 November 1861, plot South Wall 18.3/303. Samuel then married Martha FROST but does not appear to have had any more children. After Samuel died, Martha married Isaac BEARD.
The three children of Samuel and Mary were:
In the 1841 census they were living at 44 York St, Westminster, London and in 1851 at 42 York St: In 1861 they had moved to 309 Oxford St (St George Hanover Sq) where he was a mangle maker, although there is some confusion over names and ages : Mary Ann died in London in November 1861 (Dec qtr St Geo Han Sq 1a/452). She was buried at Brompton Cemetery, London on 30 November 1861 grave SW/18.3/303. After Mary's death, Samuel remained at 309 Oxford St, London. He married Martha BEARD (née FROST) on 19 August 1863 at St George Hanover Square. Samuel was 49 and Martha 37. Samuel died at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight on 6 February 1871. His Will was proved by his son George of 309 Oxford St, London. Although George was still at Oxford St, Samuel and Martha had moved to Bexley where it appears they had bought a block of houses. Hence Samuel being a "gentleman" and the executors including a "house agent". In the 1871 census, Martha was living at Bexley Heath and was a "house and landed proprietor". It is interesting that despite this being in Kent, the nearby properties were named "Richmond Villas", "Rutland Villas" and "Barrowden Villas", suggesting these were all owned by Samuel and Martha. Martha remained in Bexley. I cannot find her in the 1891 census but she was not at Barrowden Villa. By 1901 she had moved to 32 Crook Log.
Martha died at Bexley on 1 August 1903 and was buried at Bexley Heath Cemetery on 5 August 1903, plot 2042. The three children of Samuel Goodliff and Mary Ann RICHMONDElizabeth Mary Ann RICHMONDElizabeth Mary Ann was born in London 11 April 1841. Her birth was recorded as Mary Ann Elizabeth but she appears to have been known as Elizabeth (probably to avoid confusion with her mother). Elizabeth married Jonathan NEALE at St George Hanover Square, London on 7 July 1863. Jonathan was a Joiner, as was his father William NEALE. Elizabeth and Jonathan lived in Leicester where they had two children: William Richmond (1864) and Alfred George (1866). George married Catherine NEALE in Leicester on 23 February 1869. Both were aged 21. Catherine was Jonathan's younger sister; he had married Elizabeth RICHMOND in 1863 (brother and sister married sister and brother). The wedding record is notable for the number of witnesses who signed. There were the two fathers (William NEALE and Samuel RICHMOND) and the younger sisters (Ada, Elizabeth & Abigail NEALE and Louisa RICHMOND). George and Catherine had three children Florence Kate (Dec 1869), George Goodliffe Neale (Dec 1870-Jun 1871) and Ellen Elizabeth (Dec 1872).
