The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, Rutland

Elizabeth Mary Ann RICHMOND (1841-1917)
Eldest daughter of Samuel Goodliff RICHMOND and Mary Ann TOWNLEY

Elizabeth Mary Ann was born in London 11 April 1841. Her birth was recorded as Mary Ann Elizabeth but she appears to have been known as Elizabeth (probably to avoid confusion with her mother).

In the 1841 census she was living at 44 York St, Westminster, London and in 1851 at 42 York St. By 1861 the family had moved to 309 Oxford St (St George Hanover Sq) where her father Samuel was a mangle maker

Elizabeth married Jonathan NEALE at St George Hanover Square, London on 7 July 1863. Jonathan was a Joiner, as was his father William NEALE. He was born in Leicester in 1840 but both he and his sister Catherine were working in London by 1863. Catherine married Elizabeth's brother George Goodliffe RICHMOND in 1869.

Elizabeth and Jonathan returned to live in Leicester where they had two children: William Richmond (1864) and Alfred George (1866).

Jonathan NEALE died in Leicester on 6 March 1871. He left a Will, naming Elizabeth as the executrix. He is buried in a family plot at Welford Rd Cemetery, Leicester. Of note, another person buried in this cemetery is Thomas COOK, travel entrepreneur, with whom the GOODLIFFE, ANDREWS, RICHMOND and EYRE families were closely associated. Thomas COOK is commemorated on the gate to the Barrowden Baptist Chapel which many of these families attended.

After Jonathan died, Elizabeth stayed in Leicester. In the 1871 census she has only son Alfred with her. Older son William Richmond Neale was living with his uncle, George Goodliff RICHMOND in London.

1871 census for Elizabeth NEALE at 9 South Gate St, Leicester.

Elizabeth married George ANDREWS, a provision merchant from Leicestershire, on 28 October 1873 at Christ Church, Bexley. George was 31, a bachelor and Elizabeth was a widow aged 32.

Who was George ANDREWS? The marriage shows his father was George ANDREWS, deceased. George and Elizabeth had one child, George Richmond Eyre ANDREWS. The name gives us a clue to George's family. Elizabeth's great-uncle, James GOODLIFFE, married Elizabeth Caroline ANDREWS at Morcott and Barrowden Chapel in 1817. Elizabeth Caroline's parents were Exton ANDREWS and Mary EYRE. Thus George's father, George, was Elizabeth Caroline ANDREWS' brother. But George's parents are elusive. By 1851, George was living with his uncle Benjamin ANDREWS at Somerby, Leicestershire. He was recorded as "son-in-law" implying Benjamin had married his brother's widow (which he had not done). In 1861 and 1871 he was "nephew" which is correct.

1851 census for George, living with Benjamin ANDREWS at Somerby.

1861 census for George, living with Benjamin ANDREWS at Somerby.

1871 census for George, living with Benjamin ANDREWS at Somerby.

George ANDREWS married Elizabeth NEALE, the widow in 1873. They had one son, George Richmond Eyre ANDREWS born 1874 in Somerby, implying George and Elizabeth took over the grocer's shop from Benjamin. Both Benjamin and his wife Jane died in 1875. They did not have any children of their own. Probate of Benjamin's Will was granted to George, the nephew, sole executor.

By 1881 George and Elizabeth had left Somerby. Their son George Richmond was boarding with Elizabeth's sister, Louisa Ellen (CORNER) at Bexley Heath. I think George and Elizabeth were living in Buxton, Derbyshire, boarding with the local grocer.

The 1891 census is problematic. George and Elizabeth, with son George, appear to have moved to Kent, where George was trying his hand at farming. Although this is an unlikely change, the census information, including ages and son George being born in Somerby, is all correct. in 1901 George and Elizabeth had moved into town at Whitstable and in 1911 had moved around the corner into Ivy Cottage.

Ivy House was a large property at the start of Church St, Whitstable. It was demolished and redeveloped as Ivy House Rd after the last of the family died there in 1960.

George ANDREWS died at Ivy House in June 1915 and was buried at All Saints, Whitstable on 12 June. Elizabeth Mary Ann ANDREWS (née RICHMOND) died at Ivy House in March 1917 and was buried at All Saints on 10 March 1917.

The Children of Elizabeth RICHMOND and Jonathan NEALE

William Richmond NEALE was born in 1864 at Leicester and was baptised at Leicester St Martin on 30 December 1866 at the same time as his younger brother. The curate noted William was 2 3/4 years old at the baptism.

Baptism for William Richmond and Alfred George NEALE at Leicester St Martin.

His father died in early 1871 and by the time of the census William was living with his uncle George Goodliff RICHMOND in London. By 1881 William and his brother Alfred were living at 244 The Grove, Hammersmirth, London. The census record is unclear - they are at 244 The Grove with a servant and a visitor - but are listed as "son-in-law". It is not clear to whom. Similarly in 1891 the brothers are together living at Westmore Green, Tatsfield, Surrey. William is a "visitor" but Alfred is "partner" - but to whom? William is a civil service telegraph operator.

1891 census for William and Alfred NEALE at Hammersmith.

William NEALE married Florence Jane JUTSON on 23 November 1891 at St John Baptist, Kentish Town, Kent.

William and Florence did not have any children. In 1901 they were at 19 Clock House Rd, Beckenham. They had William's cousin Harold CORNER with them. In 1911 they had moved to 52 Clock House Rd, where William died on 7 December 1920.

Florence Jane appears to be in the 1939 census at Wandsworth London (this may not be her). Florence died 4 February 1947 at The District Hospital Whitstable, late of Richmond Crest, Church St, Whitstable.

Alfred George NEALE was born in 1866 in Leicester and was baptised at Leicester St Martin on 30 December 1866 at the same time as his older brother William. In 1891 Alfred was a "partner" with a farmer at Tatsfield, Surrey. After the 1891 census Alfred george seems to disappear. There are several Alfred G records but none at correct. There is a marriage for an Alfred to Margaret Annie HOLLIS in Leicester, but the marriage record shows Alfred's father was a William Henry. There is an Alfred George in prison in 1911 but this is not the correct Alfred either.

The Children of Elizabeth RICHMOND/NEALE and George ANDREWS

George Richmond Eyre ANDREWS was born 22 October 1874 at the grocer's shop, Somerby, Melton Mowbray. He married his cousin Florence Kate RICHMOND in mid-1899. They had only one child - George Richmond Alfred ANDREWS, born 1901 in Lewisham. In 1901 they were living at 130 Killearn Rd, Lewisham and in 1911 at 92 Birkhill Rd, Catford, which is about 3 streets to the south.

By 1939 George and Florence had moved to Ivy House, Church St, Whitstable. George was now a cashier with the Whitstable District Council.

George died at Ivy House, Whitstable on 29 June 1948 and Florence died there on 7 July 1956. Some time after they died Ivy House was sold and the property redeveloped. Based on probate data, the property was valued at about £1500.

Their son George Richmond Alfred ANDREWS went on to marry Barbara Grace BARWELL at St Alphege, Seasalter, Whitstable on 11 April 1923. It appears that Barbara was usually known as Grace or Gracie.

1923 marriage for George ANDREWS.

George and Grace had only one child, Flora Barbara Richmond ANDREWS, born late 1923. By 1939 Grace was living with her parents at Bromley, but George was elsewhere.

At some point, George and Grace separated. When George (senior) died at Ivy House in 1948, a separate bouquet of flowers was from "Flora and Mummy". Eventually George and Grace were divorced and Grace married Harold TAPLIN in 1947 in Hove. George Richmond Alfred ANDREWS died at Ivy House, Whitstable on 28 August 1960 and was buried in the nearby church of All Saints, plot III/S5. Grace died in 1985 near Hove. Their daughter Flora married Edward BROWN in Liverpool in 1947. She died at Brighton & Hove in 2009.
