James was born at Wirksworth in 1770 to James FROGGATT and Ellen PEACH. He was baptised on 12 Sept 1770 at Wirksworth, Derbyshire:

Baptism for James FROGGATT son of James FROGGATT at Wirksworth.

Between 1775 and 1794 the family moved to Brewhouse Yard in Nottingham. Here James married Mary LOWE on 5 October 1801 at Nottingham St Nicholas.

Marriage of James FROGGATT to Mary LOWE at Nottingham St Nicholas.

Both James and Mary lived in Brewhouse Yard, and they appear to have continued to reside there with James' father (James senior and second wife Ann) until James' death in 1808 and Ann's in 1814. Note that the Land Tax continued to be paid to Cornelius LAUNDER by a James Froggatt until at least 1818, which presumably was James (junior).

James and Mary had six children, only two of whom survived to adulthood.

Name Date of Baptism Date of Death
James 17 July 1802 27 July 1802
John 19 Nov 1803 8 Dec 1811
James 20 May 1805 22 July 1840
William 16 Sept 1807 5 May 1866
Edward 28 Jan 1810 25 Jun 1816
Mary 27 March 1812 20 Aug 1824

James' occupation at the time of marriage is unknown. However in Hodson’s Directory of 1814 and Pigot’s of 1815 James Froggatt is listed as a Wharfinger, of Brewhouse Yard. This is the last record for James until his death on 2/1/1824. A Wharfinger was usually a person who managed a wharf. We know that there was an extensive set of wharves – The Duke's Wharves – opposite Brewhouse Yard, so perhaps James managed one of these.

Map of Nottingham: Note the additional buildings at Brewhouse Yard compared to the earlier map and the proximity to The Duke’s Wharfs where James Froggatt would have worked as a Wharfinger.

Mary, widow of James, is the only Froggatt remaining at Brewhouse Yard in the 1841 Census (indexed as TROGETT). She was a “charwoman”, aged 65 (noting ages were rounded down so born between 1772 and 1776 in Nottinghamshire). Living with her was Mary HUDSON a pauper. The 1841 census records 10 dwellings in Brewhouse Yard. Most have several families living in each but Mary (and Mary) occupy a complete dwelling to themselves.

After the 1841 census Mary disappears. She is not in the 1851 census at Brewhouse Yard or elsewhere. By 1841 only Mary's son William (and his family with Elizabeth BOWLER) remained alive. She was not with them in 1851 so presumably she had died but there are no deaths in Nottingham (or elsewhere) that match her age. The death record of Mary Froggatt Nottingham Sep qtr 1848 is not her as this Mary was aged 15 months.

The Children of James and Mary FROGGATT

JAMES FROGGATT (1805 - 1840)

James was born at Brewhouse Yard and baptised on 20 May 1805 in Nottingham St Nicholas. He married Mary HOPKIN at Nottingham St Nicholas on Christmas Day 25 December 1833. Mary had been born to John HOPKIN and Ann (MALBON) on 10 September 1803 and was baptised at the Broad St Baptist Chapel on 19 September 1806.

Register of birth and baptism for Mary HOPKIN at Broad St Baptist Chapel, Nottingham.

1833 marriage of James FROGGATT and Mary HOPKIN at Nottingham St Nicholas.

The witnesses to the marriage were James' younger brother William, and Ann HOPKIN who was probably Mary's mother.

James died at Nottingham General Hospital and was buried at on 22 July 1840 at Nottingham St Nicholas. The cause of death is not stated nor is his usual place of residence.

I have not located a definite birth record for any children for James and Mary.

What happened to Mary his widow? In the 1841 census Mary FROGGATT was living at Edward St, Nottingham and working as a lace maker. Edward St ran off Castle Rd, just north of Isabella St and close to Brewhouse Yard where the Froggatt family had resided. Mary's brother-in-law William FROGGATT and his family were also living in Edward St in 1841, suggesting both brothers had moved there from Brewhouse Yard after they had married.

1841 census for Mary FROGGATT in Edward St, Nottingham.

Also living with Mary FROGGATT in 1841 was a John HOPKIN aged 13, so born around 1827. There were several John HOPKIN(S) born in Nottingham around this time but only one baptism fits the facts. Although not certain, this John was probably the John Henry HOPKIN born to Mary HOPKIN and baptised at Nottingham St Mary on 27 November 1827. Mary was unmarried. If this is the Mary who later married James FROGGATT she would have been aged about 24 at the time.

1827 baptism for John HOPKIN.

In 1844 there is a marriage for Mary FROGGATT to James ELLIOT (son of Samuel Elliott, frame work knitter, deceased) on 16 July 1844 at St Mary's Church, their residence at time of marriage for both being Malin Hill (near High Pavement). John worked for the gas company. The witnesses were John Hopkin and Ann Hopkin. Mary's parents were John, a tailor and Anne so presumably the witnesses were Mary's parents. John Hopkin is listed in Pigot's 1830 Directory as Tailor and Habit Maker, 2 Warser Gate.

1844 marriage for Mary FROGGATT to James ELLIOTT.

Mary and new husband James ELLIOTT are in the 1851 census at Victoria St, Nottingham. Or are they?

There is a James and Mary ELLIOTT in the 1851-1881 censuses in Nottingham. James worked for the local gas company in various roles. In all censuses Mary was born in Papplewick which is some miles north of Nottingham. In these censuses they have a "son" or later "son-in-law" William RICHMOND with them. William was the (illegitimate) son of Mary RICHMOND, born 30 Mary 1845. Clearly this was not Mary FROGGATT/HOPKIN.

1845 birth record for William RICHMOND

1851 census for James and Mary ELLIOTT. (Note that Mary was Mary RICHMOND and Harriett was James' daughter from his first marriage and William was Mary's son.)

1861 census forJames and Mary ELLIOTT

1871 census for James and Mary ELLIOTT

1881 census forJames and Mary ELLIOTT

So what happened to Mary HOPKIN/FROGGATT/ELLIOTT? There is a marriage for a James ELLIOTT to Mary RICHMOND in Nottingham, Sep qtr 1848 (15/792) and this would be the James and Mary in the later censuses so Mary Froggatt must have died. Indeed there is a death record for Mary ELLIOTT on 9 November 1844, aged 41. Her address in Malin HIll is the same as her marriage 4 months earlier.

1844 death of Mary ELLIOTT.

William FROGGATT (1807 – 1866)

William was born 16 September 1807 at Brewhouse Yard. (The 1851 census lists this location as his place of birth). He married Elizabeth BOWLER at Nottingham St Peter in 1832. They had 7 children.

The story of William and Elizabeth continues here.
