THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARD

ANNE FROGGATT (1835 - 1866)

Anne FROGGATT was born in Edward Street, just off Brewhouse Yard, Nottingham in 1835 to William FROGGATT and Elizabeth (BOWLER). She was baptised at Nottingham St Nicholas on 18 June 1835. At that time William was working as a servant. Ann married Henry CANTELO in 1856 and they had three children. Ann died in 1866 and Henry then married Ellen MILNER and had two more children. Although four of these five children reached adulthood, none had children themselves. Thus the family lines from Anne FROGGATT and Henry CANTELO both died out.

Anne married Henry Cantelo on 25 August 1856 at Nottingham St Nicholas. Her address was Standard Hill, and his was Sneinton. Henry was a Clerk and his Father, Henry, was "Manager of factory in Calais". The witnesses were William Froggatt and Elizabeth Froggatt, Anne's parents. William was now a Timber Merchant, working for Youle's Timber Yard beside The Castle at Nottingham.

marriage of Ann Froggatt to William CANTELO at Nottingham St Nicholas in 1835. Note that all four parties to the marriage could write their own names.
Who was Henry Cantelo?

Henry was baptised in Radford St Peter, Nottingham on 24 Feb 1828, the son of Henry and Ann CANTELO. Henry (senior) and Ann had two more children in Radford (Esther, 21 Feb 1830 and Eliza 7 Oct 1832) before Ann died and Henry married Lucy FELLOWS on 4 Oct 1836.
In 1841 Henry and Lucy are living at Forest Terrace, Hyson Green, Nottingham. Henry was a Frame Smith.
In 1851 Henry, Lucy and Esther are absent, but Henry (junior) is a visitor with William Marriott at South St, Sneinton working as a silk warehouseman. This suggests Henry (senior) had moved to Calais by this date.
Henry (senior) was born in Newport on the Isle of Wight in 1799. He took the family to Calais in about 1840, returned to England, living with Henry (junior) in 1881 and dying in Nottingham in 1894 aged 93 years.

1861 census

In the 1861 census, Anne and Henry were living at Spaniel Row, adjacent to the Old Market Square in the centre of Nottingham with son Henry William and a servant. Henry was now a Silk Dealer. Their daughter Annie was "boarding" with James and Mary ATKIN in Carlton, Notts. Although the census record appears to show Annie as 3 years old, there is the word "Mo" after the 3. This would be correct as Annie was born in late 1860. I do not know if there was any relationship between the Cantelo and Atkin families.:

Deaths of Sarah and Anne

Sarah Louisa, born in 1863, died in early February 1866 (Mar qtr, Radford 7b/142) and was buried at Nottingham General Cemetery on 8 February 1866 in grave 8743.
She was followed a few months later by her mother Anne, who died in early July 1866 (Sep qtr, Radford 7b/101) and was buried with her daughter Sarah. Their grave is adjacent to that of Anne's father William FROGGATT who also died in 1866.

Just prior to the death of his wife Anne, Henry and George SHARP (of Sharp and Cantelo) acquired the lease on 2 silk factories at Orchard St, New Radford. Document M4467/1 in the Nottingham Archives records the lease for 100 pound/year and dated 5/6/1866.

In 1871, Henry, a widower, was living with his two children at 52 Portland Rd, Nottingham:

In the1911 census Henry and daughter have moved to 332 Mansfield Rd. Henry died at 332 Mansfield Rd on 19 December 1912. His estate, valued at over £17,000 was distrubuted amongst his children and Milner relations.

How was Henry's estate divided?

  • First, the Trustees - Henry William Cantelo and William McCriath - received £100 each;
  • His unmarried daughters from his second wife - Edith Ellen and Kate Marguerite - received £150 each (they were aged 34 and 30 repectively;
  • £400 to various Milner relatives of his second wife;
  • wine, liquors and consumable stores to his two unmarried daughters ;
  • all personal estate (furniture etc) to be held in trust for the use of his two unmarried daughters;
  • the last unmarried daughter to retain possession of the personal estate. Kate married in 1924 so this personal estate went to Edith Ellen who by then was living in Bridlington ut died there in 1926;
  • to liquidate all remaining property and to pay one quarter each to Henry William Cantelo and Anne Elizabeth Cox, the children of his first wife Ann FROGGATT;
  • to invest the remaining two quarters for the benefit of his two daughters (Edith and Kate) and to pay them half each of the annual income from the investment for life, then the investments to be paid to any offspring of the daughters;
  • But, Edith died in 1926 without marrying so her share of the investment would have been paid to Henry William and Anne Elizabeth;
  • Now only the last half of the investment remained, the income being paid to Kate until her death in 1953, at which time the investment was to be split equally between Henry William and Anne Elizabeth;
  • but both Henry and Anne were dead (1931 and 1938 respectively) and neither had any children. (I think after Edith Ellen had died in 1926 the Trustees would have wound up the estate and split the remaining fund between the three parties - Kate, henry and Anne).

The Children of Henry CANTELO and Anne FROGGATT

Henry William CANTELO (1857-1931)

Henry William was born in Radford in 1857. He entered the Silk business like his father. He was still living with his father in the 1901 census, aged 43.

Henry married Maria Hilda BEDFORD in Chesterton, Cambridgeshire in 1903 (Mar qtr 3b/605). Henry was aged 46 and Maria 51. Henry and Maria did not have any children.

The Gentlewoman 11 April 1903.

After marriage Henry and Maria moved east to Great Yarmouth. In the 1905 electoral roll they was living at 5 Camperdown Place, but by 1911 they were at 11 St George's Rd, Norfolk. Henry was a "retired raw silk merchant". They do not appear to be in the 1921 census.

Maria (Hilda - the name changed at some stage) died in Norfolk on 27 August 1913 at the Norfolk Asylum, where she had been admitted on 27 June. Henry then moved to a new property at Lily Broad Villa, Rollesby in 1913. He died at this adddress on 10 March 1931.

Anne Elizabeth (Annie) CANTELO (1860-1938)

Anne Elizabeth CANTELO was born in late 1860 in Nottingham. By 1881 Anne was boarding in London as a musical student with Joseph M. Jones (organist and composer) of 154 Finborough Rd, London:

Annie appears to have followed a family interest in music, her grandfather's family being well known singers in Bath in the mid-1700s and a relative "Mademoiselle Cantelo" was a respected classical singer in Nottingham:

Marriage to Harry COX

Annie Cantelo married Harry Cox, a photographer on 18 January 1890 at Nottingham St Nicholas.

1890 of Henry COX to Anne CANTELO at Nottingham St Nicholas.
Henry William Cox,

(also known as Harry) was born Nottingham in 1858, son of Alfred Wilson COX (artist and photographer) and Ellen Elizabeth PRATT. Initially, Henry William joined the family firm in St James's Street. In 1883 he moved to Birmingham to open his own studio although this venture only lasted for a few years. He then appears to have returned to Nottingham - possibly again working for the family business. Afterwards, he practised independently from his residence in Park Row, but this arrangement did not last for long. It has been said that he had an interest in photo-ceramics and if this is correct, he may well have been associated with the Midland Photo Keramic Company when they were at Beastmarket Hill in 1894-95. He acted as manager for the firm of Frederick Karoly & Co. in 1898-99.

1891 to 1921 censuses - Harry was employed making electric switches; Annie was a musician (piano).

1901 census - 49 Park Row

1911 census - Hucknell Lane, Bulwell

1911 census - 9 Park Valley, Nottingham.

After 1921, Harry and Annie seem to disappear from the records. They do not appear to be recorded in the 1939 Register (they would have been about 79 years old) and there are no obvious death records for them.

Sarah Louisa CANTELO (1863-1866)

Sarah Louisa was born in Nottingham in late 1863. She died on 3 February 1866 and was buried on 8 February 1866 in the Nottingham General Cemetery, grave 8743, adjacent to the Froggatt and Clark graves.

Children of Henry CANTELO and Ellen MILNER

Edith Ellen CANTELO (1879-1926)

Edith was born in Nottingham in late 1879. She remained with her parents for many years, nursing her father right to his death in 1912. She was an accomplished pianist and was noted for her concerts and for accompanying soloists. She appears to have moved from Nottingham to Bridlington, Yorkshire some time after 1914, but she is not found in the 1921 census so may have been overseas with her sister Kate at the time. Edith had visited Bridlington in the past, newspapers tell us she brought her father here in July 1910 and 1912; they stayed in a hotel at 7 The Cresent. There are several newspaper articles about her concerts up to 1925 in Nottingham and later in Bridlington. Some time before her death in 1926 Edith boarded at the St Leonard Hotel in York St, Bridlington. The hotel had views of the sea but was demolished a few years ago.

Edith CANTELO died on 6 January 1926 at Lloyd Hospital, Bridlington, East Yorkshire, late of St Leonards Hotel, York Rd, Bridlington. Cause of death was "chronic gastric ulcer". The informant was her sister Kate (now Kate HOPE) of 18 Langholm Cres, Darlington.

Katherine Marguerite CANTELO (1883-1953)

Katherine was born in Nottingham on 18 June 1883. She was living with her parents in the 1901 census, aged 17. In 1911 however, she was a patient at the oddly named "Nordrach sur Mendip" on the Mendip Hills near Blagdon in Somerset.

Nordrach was built in about 1860 and was known as Willoughby's Farm. In 1899 two English doctors who had been successfully treated for TB at the Nordrach Sanatorium in the Black Forest decided to pool their resources and open their own sanatorium in Somerset. Their regime in Germany had involved wholesome food, pasteurised milk and plenty of fresh air. Willoughby's Farm was reopened as the Nordrach Sanatorium. And apparently demand for its services was so high, even at £20 per week, that the doctors decided to open its doors even before they had finished altering the house. The patients lived both in the house and in the many villas dotted around the grounds.

There is a detailed story about the sanatorium here.

After surviving TB and Nordrach House, Kate returned to Nottingham, living at 2 Clarendon St. She was now an accomplished pianist, performing in local concerts (not to be confused with her half-sister Annie Elizabeth CANTELO who was also an accomplished pianist). In July 1914 Kate and her sister Edith went on a vacation to the Black Forest, Germany, organised by Thomas Cook. Whilst there war was declared by Germany and the four young women were held in custody for some time before being aloowed to return to England.

I cannot find Kate CANTELO or her sister Edith in the 1921 census. They may have been overseas, undeterred by their experiences in Germany in 1914.

After Elizabeth died, Frederick married Katherine Marguerite CANTELO on 3 March 1924 at Darlington. Kate was 41 and Frederick was 55. Kate and the CANTELO family were known to the Froggatt family in Nottingham. Kate's father - Henry CANTELO - had first married Anne FROGGATT in Nottingham in 1856. They had three children before Anne died in 1866. Henry later married Ellen MILNER and they had two daughters - Edith and Kate.

Frederick Willian HOPE died on 18 July 1926 at 18 Langholm Cres, Darlington. In his Will he left all his estate to Kate.

After Frederick's death Kate later moved to Richmond, Yorkshire (1939 Register) and later again to Cross Gates in Leeds. She died at St James Hospital Leeds on 7 February 1953 and was cremated at Cottingley Hall Crematorium. The informant at death was her cousin Harriet OVERBURY.

Kate left a detailed Will. She appointed her friend Catherine PATTISON as Executrix.

  • to Catherine PATTISON - £20 and all her smallware and other items;
  • to Winifred INCH of Darlington in memory of her sister - £20;
  • to Rose BURRELL of Darlington - £10 and her diamond cluster ring;
  • to Constance BROWNE of Clacton on Sea - £5 and her fumed oak book trough;
  • to Sylvia Hepworth of Wakefield - £5 and her oil painting;
  • to Harriet OVERBURY - her antique workbox;
  • to Helen English - her ivory tea caddy;
  • to Margaret AKEROYD - her casserrole and a painting;
  • to Beatrice ARMSTRONG - wooden tea caddy that once belonged to Miss JEFFS;
  • All remaining property to be sold and the proceeds split between her cousins Rachel MILNER and Harriet OVERBURY if living (which they were).

The disposition of Kate's estate is of interest as she would have inherited all of the FROGGATT of Sandiacre heirlooms via her late husband Frederick HOPE. Frederick's first wife - Elizabeth Helen FROGGATT was the only member of the FROGGATT family to remain in England; her two brothers William and James emigrated to New Zealand. We know from correspondence that Elizabeth had various FROGGATT items of jewellery, furniture and the Froggatt family seal. Unfortunately it would appear likely that any items she had retained would have been sold on her death, unless they went to either Rachel MILNER or Harriet OVERBURY. In either case, read on about the OVERBURY family...

Who were the OVERBURY family and how did they relate to the FROGGATT and CANTELO families?

Harriet Sophia OVERBURY was the informant on the death of Kate Marguerite HOPE. She was the daughter of Annie MILNER and John Foster OVERBURY. Harriet worked as a nurse and never married. There are several lines of connection between the families, starting in around 1860 when William FROGGATT and John Foster OVERBURY were neighbours at Standard Hill, Nottingham.
