THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARDHarriet Sophia OVERBURY and the OVERBURY Family - connections to the FROGGATT and CANTELO familiesThe OVERBURY ConnectionMy grandfather - William FROGGATT - left his family in Sandiacre Derbyshire in 1885 for a life in Australia and New Zealand. He returned, briefly, in 1907 just before his ailing mother was placed into care. At that time his mother (Sarah née GOODLIFFE) and his sister (Elizabeth Helen now married to Frederick William HOPE) were living in Darlington, Yorkshire. Apparently, they offered to give the family heirlooms of jewellery, family seal etc to William's daughter Alice, if William would allow Alice to travel to England and receive a "proper" education. William refused - and the family "silver" was lost although William did inherit half of the money. Where did the silver go? Might it have passed to the Hope, Cantelo or Overbury families? William FROGGATT's mother died in Darlington in 1909 and his sister Elizabeth in 1921. Frederick HOPE then married Kate Marguerite CANTELO, whose mother was Ellen MILNER. Ellen's sister Annie married John Foster OVERBURY, completing the family circle (see family tree below). Kate HOPE outlived Frederick HOPE by many years and would have inherited all his estate, including the FROGGATT estate. Can we trace the FROGGATT items through the Wills of the family?. The informant on the death of Kate Marguerite HOPE was Harriet Sophia OVERBURY. Harriet was the daughter of Annie MILNER and John Foster OVERBURY. Harriet worked as a nurse and never married. There are several lines of connection between the families, starting in around 1860 when William FROGGATT and John Foster OVERBURY were neighbours at Standard Hill, Nottingham. The connections between the FROGGATT, CANTELO, MILNER and OVERBURY families are shown in this family tree:
The OVERBURY Family starting with John Foster OVERBURYJohn Foster OVERBURY was born in 1845 at 47-48 Houndsditch St, St Botolph's, East London to Thomas OVERBURY and Harriet (STANGER). Thomas and Harriet had eight children. John Foster married Annie MILNER in Nottingham in 1870. By 1871 they had moved to Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland where John was a sub-editor and reporter. He and Annie had nine children. Death of AnnieAnnie OVERBURY died 26 April 1902 at Wakefield. John subsequently married Marian HANCOCK on 2 July 1904 at Christ Church, Staleybridge, Cheshire. Marian was a "certified school teacher" who had been born 16 June 1861 at Liskeard, Cornwall.
Death of John Foster OVERBURYJohn OVERBURY died 26 December 1930 at Rose Bank, Brailsford, Derbyshire according to the probate record. By 1939 Marian was a widow living at 44 Otley Rd, Headingley, Leeds.
Marian remained living at 44 Otley Rd, Leeds. At some point after 1939 she was joined there by her daughter Mignonne. Marian died at 44 Otley Rd on 21 June 1945. Her daughter Mignonne had died two years earlier.
In her Will, Marian left:
Mignonne HOISIEWho was Mignonne? In 1891 Marian was teaching at Grimsby, a port on the North Sea frequented by overseas vessels. In 1893 Marian gave birth to a daughter, Mignonne Wilmot HOISIE, born 1 June 1893 at Hulland, Derbyshire. Mignonne was baptised privately at Christ Church Hulland Derbyshire on 20 February 1893 (this is from a transcription - I think this month or year is wrong). The father was identified on the birth certificate as Carl HOISIE a sea-man and the mother as Marian HOISIE formerly HANCOCK. As far as I can find, they never married. The baptism transcription shows Carl as a "mate at sea" and with no permanent address. The birth was registered at Brailsford, near Ashbourne in Derbyshire. It appears that Mignonne did not remain long with her mother. In 1901 she was "boarding" with George and Harriet BOAM, farmers at Hulland Ward. She was reunited with her mother by 1911 at Wakefield. Mignonne attended Wakefield Girls High School and later became a secondary school teacher. In 1917 she was teaching at Penistone High School. By 1921 she was teaching at the Boys Modern School, Leeds, and boarding at The outlook Club, 8 Cavendish Rd (now part of the University of Leeds). Later, in the 1939 Register, Mignonne was boarding with Kenneth and Isabella HOOD at Summerhill, Crossbeck Rd, Ilkley Yorkshire. Mignonne never married and died 5 August 1943 at 44 Otley Rd, Leeds, where she had been living with her mother. In her Will, Mignonne left:
Vera and Sydney GRIX were the children of Frederick Charles GRIX and Elizabeth (BOAM). Elizabeth BOAM was the daughter of George and Harriet BOAM who had looked after Mignonne in her early years at Hulland Ward.
