THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARD:Joseph Froggatt (1845-1917)Joseph was born in 1845 to William FROGGATT and Elizabeth (BOWLER):
Joseph was born in mid-1845 in Nottingham. He married Elizabeth Jane POUNDS at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham on 2 July 1867. The parish record is faded and almost impossible to read, but one of the witnesses was William Clark, Joseph’s new brother-in-law. Joseph and Elizabeth had four children, all born in Nottingham:
1871 census: 44 Glebe Hill Cottages. Joseph was working as a Poor Rates Collector The 1881 census finds the family at 27 Glebe St, together with a servant, Annie Allan. Joseph was still a Poor Rates Collector. Joseph's wife Elizabeth died on 4 January 1888. Marriage to Mary Flewitt The following year Joseph married Mary FLEWITT at Nottingham St. Andrew on 9 May 1889. They had twin sons Harold and Frank, baptised 25 December 1891 but both died before the end of that year. 1891 census: 29 Woodborough Rd, Nottingham 1901 census: Joseph, Mary and his youngest daughter Florence were living at 63 Church Drive, Nottingham. 1911 Census: Sometime after 1901, Joseph and Mary moved out of Nottingham to 4 Owthorpe Grove, Arnold, where they were in the 1911 census: Joseph died on 8 March 1917 aged 72. Mary died on 29 January 1940 aged 86. Joseph, Elizabeth Jane (his first wife) and Mary (his second wife) are buried together in the old Nottingham cemetery known as Rock Cemetery.
THE LAST FROGGATT OF BREWHOUSE YARDThe Froggatt family relationship with Brewhouse Yard came to an end with the death of Joseph Froggatt in 1917. This closed the history on four generations and 17 children who had lived or been born at BHY. Of those 17 children, 9 survived to adulthood but only 4 were male and who had offspring to continue the Froggatt name. Two of these were the youngest born at BHY (William and Joseph). William's 2 surviving sons (William and James) emigrated to Australia with only William having children (14 in total) leaving Joseph's son Harry Joseph Froggatt as the sole remaining Brewhouse Yard descendent bearing the FROGGATT name in England. Harry had one son, Bernard Harry, who also married but had only a daughter, ending the Froggatt line in England. William, however, had 14 children in Australia and New Zealand but only 5 were sons who reached adulthood. The oldest, Frank, was adopted early in his life and become known as Frank HUME the other 4 had 7 sons between them. The Children of Joseph and Elizabeth FROGGATTElizabeth FroggattElizabeth was born in Nottingham in 1872. She is in the 1881 and 1891 census with her parents. Elizabeth married Ernest JARVILLE at Nottingham St Andrews, on 13 August 1895. They were living at 82 Burford Rd. Ernest was an accounts clerk. They had two children:
1891 census: Ernest married Elizabeth in 1895, so is still living with his parents: 1901 census: 82 Burford St, Hyson Green 1911 census: 73 Mona Rd, West Bridgford - just east of the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground Ernest JARVILLE died at 91 Kings Road, Melton Mowbray on 9 December 1930. He was buried at Melton Mowbray on 12 December 1930. Administration of his Will was passed to Elizabeth, his widow. Value of estate was £1865/4/5.
Elizabeth died on 26 July 1939. She was living at The Cottage Stonesby, Liecestershire (near Melton Mowbray). Administration of her Will went to Doris Sikes (wife of Robert Parke Sikes) - Ernest and Elizabeth's older daughter. Value of estate was £418/2/4.
Doris JARVILLE married Robert Parke SIKES in Melton Mowbray in 1927. They appear not to have had any children.
Robert SIKES died in Melton Mowbray in 1968 aged 72. Doris died in Jun 1972 aged 75. Gladys JARVILLE did not marry. In the 1929 electoral roll the family was living at the White Lion Hotel. By 1939 Gladys had moved to Grimsby. She is in the 1939 Register living at 59 Wellowgate, Grimsby. Her occupation was cafe manageress and her date of birth is given as 12 May 06 which is clearly wrong. Her birth was registered in the June quarter 1897 and she is in the 1911 census. She died in Grimsby on 15 October 1946 aged 49. She was buried on 18 October 1946 at Scartho Rd Cemetery, Grimsby, plot 103/F/1. Her address was 59 Wellowgate, Grimsby. Probate was granted to Harold HOWDEN, Solicitor and James Laws Cinema Manager, value was £1182/2/1.
Harry Joseph FroggattHarry Joseph was born 8 December 1874. In the 1881 census he is aged 6 and living with his parents at 27 Glebe St, Nottingham. In the 1891 census Harry Joseph was a Chemist Apprentice and in 1901 was working in Willesden, Middlesex as Chemist's Assistant. He was a photographer when he married Caroline Mary Whyman in Sneinton, Nottingham on 26 December 1906. They had one child - Bernard Harry FROGGATT born 19 July 1908 in Hendon and baptised 28 August 1908 at All Souls Church, Harlesden, Middlesex: Harry, Caroline and Bernard were at 88 Furness St, Willesden in 1911: At some later time they moved closer to London, where Harry was a rubber goods dealer. However, at some point the marriage failed. In the 1939 National Register Harry Joseph is living at 94 Hampden Rd, Hornsey, Middlesex with a "M FROGGATT". Harry was recorded as "married" and "M" as "single". This entry was later amended, apparently on 21 May 1949 to read Mabel COOKE. Mabel was born 12 July 1894 so was twenty years Harry's junior. In 1939 Harry was aged 65 and Mabel 45.
Not far from Harry, at 32 Chevening Rd, Willesden, lived his wife Caroline and son Bernard Harry. Bernard was aged 31 and was now a bookkeeper and Air Raid Warden. Caroline died in 1953(mar qtr Barnet 5a/1033). Harry died at 16 Cleveland Ave, Chiswick, in West London on 11 November 1956, aged 81. The informant was "M COOKE". Harry Joseph left a Will, dated 13 April 1955. In this he left all his estate to Mabel Cooke, of 16 Cleveland Ave, Chiswick, and if she died prior, to the Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals, the RSPCA, and Our Dumb Friends League. He did not leave any estate for his only child Bernard Harry FROGGATT. Mabel did outlive Harry Joseph, and duly inherited £28-11-4........ (View page 1, page 2, page3 of Will, or the whole Will as a pdf file). Perhaps that was why the Will was not contested. Bernard Harry Froggatt,
In 1964 Bernard and Eileen moved to 89 Turner Rd, Harrow, London. Eileen's parents also moved at this time from 4 Kempe St to 16 Tiverton Rd, which is only a few houses around the corner from 89 Turner Rd.
Bernard and Eileen had only one child - Brenda E. FROGGATT, born in 1946 in Pancras, London. Florence FroggattFlorence's birth was registered in Nottingham in the December quarter 1876 at Glebe St, Nottingham. According to the 1939 Register she was born 8 October 1877. Clearly this date is wrong. In the 1901 census she is aged 24, a haberdashery assistant, and living with her parents at 63 Church St, Nottingham. There is a marriage for a Florence Froggatt to Thomas WARNER in Nottingham in 1903 (Sep qtr, 7b/448). This may be her. In the 1911 census they are recorded at 9 Ladysmith St, Nottingham. Tom was working as a lace warehouseman. Tom and Florence do not appear to have had any children. In the 1939 Register, both are living at 57 Highfield Rd, West Bridgford, Nottingham.
Thomas WARNER died in Nottingham General Hospital on 17 January 1952. His address at the time of death was 57 Highfield Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. Administration of his Will went to Florence, valued at £248/2/3. Florence WARNER died in Nottingham General Hospital on 10 June 1954, aged 77.Her address at the time of death was also 57 Highfield Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. Administration of her Will went to Harry Joseph FROGGATT (her brother), valued at £2268/3/4, an increase of £2,000 over her inheritance from Tom. Assuming Harry inherited his sister's estate, he managed to reduce its value to £28 in just over 2 years.
