The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandElizabeth Ellen GOODLIFFE - 7th child son of John and Elizabeth GOODLIFFEElizabeth Ellen was born 9 April 1844 in the family home of Lambley Lodge near Belton in the County of Rutland. She was baptised at the local church of St Peter on 1 August 1847 along with several of her siblings.
Elizabeth Ellen married Charles Bryan WARD on 24 Dec 1868 at Braunston. Charles was a farmer of 47 acres at Launde Lodge, less than 5km (3 miles) NW of Belton. After marriage they lived at Launde Lodge.
Elizabeth and Charles had 6 children:
In the 1871 census, Elizabeth and Charles were living at Launde, Leicestershire. By 1881 they have moved west to a farm at Burrow Village, Somerby, a few miles west of Oakham. By 1891 they were farming further west again at Newton Harcourt with their five younger children. Their oldest - Edith Ellen - was visiting Cottnell's Farm in Middlesex at the time.
Charles WARD died at Newton Harcourt on 7 Nov 1896 and was buried at St Luke's Churchyard. After Charles had died, their son Charles Bernard remained on the farm at Main St, Newton Harcourt with his sister Lillie (Eliza). At the time of the 1901 census their mother Elizabeth Ellen was visiting her sister Annie (REYNOLDS) at Jubilee Lodge, Ridlington.
It would appear that after her husband had died in 1896, Elizabeth Ellen moved around, staying with various relatives and in-laws. In 1901 she was visiting her sister, in 1911 she was with her nephew and niece John and Annie REYNOLDS (the children of her sister Anna). In 1921 she was living with Frederick NORMAN, her widowed son-in-law.
There are no further records for Elizabeth Ellen WARD until her death on 29 February 1932. She was buried with her husband Charles at St Luke's Churchyard, Newton Harcourt. The Children of Elizabeth Ellen and Charles Bryan WARDEdith Ellen WARD (1870-1955)Edith Ellen was born 28 February 1870, probably at Launde Lodge or Burrow on the Hill, Leicester. She was recorded in the 1881 census with her parents at Burrow Village, but in 1891 she was a visitor (this is the most likely entry) at Cottnell's Farm, Enfield, Middlesex. There are no records for Edith until her marriage to Arthur EVANS in Mid-1900. The marriage was registered at Billesdon, a town lying just west of Launde. Arthur was a pawnbroker, born in Coventry in 1867. In 1901 they were living at 30 Wren St, Coventry and in 1911 at 22 Avondale Rd, Coventry..
As the 1911 census shows, Edith and Arthur WARD had two children:
At the time of the 1921 census Arthur and Edith were at Marine Mansions, Barmouth, presumably on holiday. They had left their two sons, Eric and Arthur at home at The Gatehouse, Stoke Park, Coventry.
Arthur EVANS died at his home, The Gatehouse, Stoke Park on 10 November 1926. He left an estate valued at £5,476.
It is not clear for how long Edith Ellen and her two sons remained at The Gatehouse, but by 1939 Edith and younger son Arthur were living at 7 Morningside, Coventry. They later moved to 15 Morningside, where Edith Ellen EVANS died on 7 May 1955. She had outlived her husband Arthur by 29 years. Probate, valued at £17,824 was granted to her son Eric Roy EVANS an accountant.
Of the Children of Edith Ellen and Arthur EVANSEric Ward EVANS (1901-1982) was born in Coventry on 29 April 1901. He became an accountant, being admitted as a chartered accountant in 1934. Eric married Cissie Madeline CARTLIDGE at St George's Church, Newcastle on 22 November 1934. Cissie was the third daugter of Lawrence and Elizabeth CARTLIDGE of Newcastle. Their engagement and wedding featured in the Coventry press.
Eric and Cissie had one child - Stephen Geoffrey EVANS - born in Coventry on 23 August 1938. The family was recorded at Ravenbank, Coventry in the 1939 Register.
Eric EVANS was appointed a magistrate in Coventry in 1951. He served in this position for 21 years. He was appointed aas chairman of the city Bench in 1971 and retired in 1972.
Cissie Madeline EVANS died at her home, 31 Beechwood Ave, on 10 July 1980. Eric Ward EVANS died at the same address on 10 February 1982. They left a combined estate valued at about £150,000
Arthur Roy EVANS (1902-1981) was born in Coventry on 30 November 1902. He married Florence Gwendoline HOWELLS on 7 June 1928 at St Margaret's Church, Stoke, Coventry. In the 1939 Register they were living with Arthur's mother Edith at 7 Morningside Coventry.
Arthur Roy EVANS died at 7 Morningside, Coventry on 12 October 1981. Eliza Ann (Lillie) WARD (1873-?1922)Eliza Ann WARD was born at Burrow on the Hill, Leicester in 1873. She was recorded with the family in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. In 1901 she was living with her brother Charles on a farm at Newton Harcourt, Leicester, and in 1911 she was living with her cousin Clara COLLIER in Liverpool. It is not clear what happened to Eliza after 1911, but the death record for an Eliza A WARD in June 1922 at Leicester may be her.
Charles Bernard WARD (1876-1957)Charles Bernard WARD was born in Burrow on the Hill, Leicestershire on 20 May 1876, together with his twin brother Joseph William WARD. By 1901 he was working as a farmer at Newton Harcourt, Leicester with his sister Eliza (Lillie). Charles married Lucy DEACON in late 1902. Lucy had been born at Mt Bosworth, Leicester in 1873 to Thomas DEACON and Hannah (CHRISTIAN). After marriage Charles and Lucy lived on the farm at Newton Harcourt. By 1911 they had had six children, but the oldest, William had died soon after birth.
Charles and Lucy had 7 children:
By 1921 Charles and family were living at Oakland Terrace, New Queniborough, where he was working as a farm bailiff. (By a strange coincidence Oakland Terrace is now known as New Zealand Lane). By 1939 he and Lucy, with daughter Ruth were living at 40 Queen St, Oadby. Charles was now working as a farm labourer.
Charles Bernard WARD died at Leicester in 1957. Of the Children of Charles and Lucy WARD:William WARD (1903-1903): William was born and died in mid-1903 at Newton Harcourt, Leicester. Phyllis May WARD (1904-1949): was born in Newton Harcourt on 27 August 1904. She was recorded in the 1911 and 1921 censuses with her family. Phyllis married Robert Howard BRIGGS on 3 October 1936 at Oadly St Peter, Leicester. Robert was the son of WA BRIGGS, a local JP and magistrate. Robert was a farmer, but in 1939 he was worling as the farm bailiff at Oak's Farm, Willey Rd, west of Hucknall, Nottingham.
Phyllis May BRIGGS died at Oak's Farm on 7 October 1949 and was buried at Greasley St Mary on 11 October 1949.
Kathleen Deacon WARD (1905-1992): was born in Newton Harcourt on 3 August 1905. She was recorded with her family in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. Kathleen married William Thomas BROOKS in 1936. William was born in 16 July 1913, the son of William John BROOKS and Sarah Emma LEONARD. William (senior) was a carpenter; William (junior) was a handicraft teacher.
After 1939 there is very little information about this family. William Thomas BROOKS died in 1983. The death entry with this date matches William's date of birth from the 1939 Register. It appears that Kathleen died in the Beeches Nursing Home on 5 September 1992. Her brother Tom would be Thomas Bernard WARD. No other family is mentioned in the obituary.
Ruth Ellen WARD (1908-1968): was born in Newton Harcourt on 22 July 1908. She was recorded with her parents in the 1911 and 1921 censuses and in the 1939 Register. (The 1939 Register notes she was "crippled". No infirmity was recorded in 1911 so thismust have occured later in her life.) Ruth did not marry. She died in 1968. Charles Bryan WARD (1909-1997): was born in Newton Harcourt on 20 August 1909. He was recorded with the family in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. Charles married Florence Ethel TURTON at Oadby Church on 19 August 1939. A month later the 1939 Register was taken (29 September 1939).
Charles and Florence had one child - Derek (1943), before Florence died in 1956. Charles then married Marie Joyce WALLACE in 1957. Charles Bryan WARD died in 1997. His second wife, Marie, died in Leicester in 2015. Both are commemorated on the WARD grave at Newtown Harcourt St Luke.
Thomas Bernard WARD (1910-1993): was born in Newton Harcourt on 8 December 1910 and was recorded with his family in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. Thomas married Nancy R MERRALL in 1936. Nancy was the daughter of Edward MERRALL and Ann Jane (BROWN), born 25 December 1910 in Leicester. Thomas and Nancy had one child - Christine (1937). At the time of the 1939 Register Thomas was working as a cashier and boarding at Mountsorrel Lane, Rothley, while Nancy and baby Christine were staying with her parents at Leicester.
After 1939 Thomas, Nancy and Christine moved to 15 The Rise, Rothley. Nancy Rosary WARD died that this address on 15 December 1989 (10 days short of her 79th birthday). Thomas Bernard WARD died at the same address on 13 February 1993.
John Goodliffe WARD (1911-1942): was born in Newton Harcourt on 26 December 1911. He married Kathleen Maud CLAYTON in 1936. They had one son - John Barry WARD (1936). John Goodliffe died at the Royal Infirmary, Leicester on 9 October 1942.
John's widow - Kathleen - later married Edward Kenneth PAYNE, in Leicester in 1945. Edward died in 1982, so Kathleen married Sydney George FORD in 1984 in Barnstaple, Devon. Kathleen died at 18 Chichester Park, Woolacombe, Devon on 9 Decemebr 1990 and was buried at Mortehoe Cemetery, Devon.
Joseph William WARD (1876-1960)Joseph William was born at Burrow on the Hill on 20 May 1876. He was recorded with his family in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. BY 1901 Jospeh was working as a boot and she warehouseman, boarding with Mrs Belton at 43 East Rd, Leicester. In 1903 Joseph married Florence Edith HEIGHTON. Florence was born in Leicester in 1873 to John and Ellen HEIGHTON. In 1901 Florence was working in a boot and cloch(e) room in Leicester. By 1911 Joseph had become a dairyman, working in a dairy factory, either processing milk for sale or making butter or cheese.
Joseph and Florence had five children, all girls:
There is a newspaper story about a Joseph William and Florence Edith WARD in 1917. This may be the correct family, in which case Joseph would have been aged 41.
After this foray into property management, Joseph and Florence moved to Kings Bromley where Joseph continued as a dairyman, working for Edwards Creamery Ltd. The creamery was adjacent to the Trent and Mersey Canal, close to the site now occupied by the Kings Bromley marina.
The 1921 census and the 1939 Register find Joseph at Kings Bromley, first as a dairyman and then as a credit draper and newsagent. (A credit draper sold drapery on credit and then was responible for collecting the debts.)
Joseph again appeared in court in 1941, this time for a driving offence. His address was given as Old School House, King's Bromley.
The next newspaper report is for the death of Florence Edith WARD, who died in Burton General Hospital on 22 April after a fall at her home, Old School House, King's Bromley on 13 April 1960. A few months later Joseph William WARD died at the same address.
Of the Children of Joseph William and Florence Edith WARDDoris May WARD (1904-1994) was born in Leicester in 1904. In the 1921 census Doris was living at home but working as a "pupil teacher" for the Staffordshire Education Committee at King's Bromley. Doris married George Vincent LEES at Holy Cross Church, Lichfield on 22 April 1930. George LEES had been born at Cowley Hill Farm, Hamstall Ridware, Rugeley on 22 April 1904 to Charles LEES and Louisa Catherine (WELLS), "chees" farnmers.
George and Doris had five children:
After marriage George continued farming at Brook Hay Farm, Alrewas in conjunction with his brother Arthur. The brothers appeared in court in 1931 for importing sheep from Scotland that were later found to have the sheep scab disease. In 1933 George was still at Brook Hay Farm, when he hit a bicyclist, but by 1939 George and Doris had moved to Church Farm, Barton under Needwood where George was now working as "farmer's haulage contractor". The 1939 Register shows the two older girls and three other closed records but the birth records show George and Doris had only four children by this date (Patricia, Margaret, Charles and Avice). The fifth closed record is probably a domestic servant.
After 1939 we know George and Doris stayed on at Church Farm. In 1941 George, now delivering coal, was convicted of cruelty to a dog. George Vincent LEES died at the Andressey Hospital, Burton upon Trent on 22 August 1972. His wife Doris was living at 14 The Grange King's Bromley at the time. Doris May LEES died at King's Bromley (presumably 14 The Grange) on 3 December 1994.
Irene Florence WARD (1905-1992) was born in Leicester on 18 September 1905 to Joseph and Florence WARD. She was recorded with her parents in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. Irene married Charles Henry William Gifford INGE at All Saints Church, King's Bromley on 24 June 1931. Charles INGE was a surveyor and estate agent, as was his father. They lived at Broom Leasoe Cottage, beside the Coventry Canal at Whittington.
Charles was elected to the local county council, a role he held for 16 years. Both he and Irene were elected to the Parish Council for Whittington. In later years they moved to Wren Park, Darnford Rd, Whittington. Charles died at this address in 1 November 1969. Irene Florence INGE died att his address on 16 Decembner 1992.
Ellen Beatrice WARD (1906-?) was born in 1906 in Leicester. She was recorded in the 1911 census with the family at Compton Rd, Leicester. She is not with the family in the 1921 census nor with her parents in the 1939 Register. This may be her, with her uncle and aunt in the 1921 census.
After 1921 Ellen Beatrice WARD disappears from the records. I cannot find a death or marriage for her. She does not appear to be in the 1939 Register, under any name. What happened? Edith Marion WARD (1908-?) was born in Compton Rd, Leicester in 1908. She was recorded with her family in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. As with her sister Ellen, Edith seems to disappear from the records after 1921. Mary Eveline WARD (1909-?) was born in Leicester in 1909. She was recorded in the 1911 and 1921 censuses with her family. After 1921 she disappears from the records. Florence May WARD (1878-1896)Florence May was born at Burrow on the Hill on 12 May 1878. She was recorded with her family in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. On 5 September 1881 when she was just over 3 years old Florence was enrolled at school at Burrow on the Hill. She left six months later in March 1882 when the family left the district to go to Newton Harcourt .
The family moved to Newton Harcourt in 1882. Her father Charles Bryan WARD died at Newton Harcourt on 7 November 1896. Florence May WARD died a week later on 14 May 1896 aged 18 years. Both are buried at St Luke's churchyard, Newton Harcourt. Eveline Beatrice WARD (1879-1948)Eveline Beatrice WARD was born at Burrow on the Hill on 27 November 1879 to Charles and Elizabeth WARD. Shew as recorded with them in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. By 1901 Eveline was living in Pailsey, Scotland, where she had met George Lindsay FRASER, a timber salesman. On 30 December 1901 Eveline married George FRASER at St Luke's Church, Newton Harcourt. George had been born in Paisley, Scotland on 19 September 1871 to James Roy FRASER (a musician) and Margaret NAIRN. After marriage George and Eveline lived in Scotland, where they had six children:
By the time of the 1911 census George and Eveline were living at "Woodbine", Bridge of Weir, Scotland where George was still working as a Timber Broker. By this date two sons - Charles Ward and ian Bernand - had died. The Electoral Registers also tell us that he owned 61 and 63 Trefoil Ave, Glasgow by this date.
In 1921 the family was scattered. Eveline was still at "Woodbine" in Bridge of Weir, George and sons were staying at the Southwick Timbermill at Kirkgunzeon and the two daughters, aged 13 and 11, were visitors with the Taylor family, farmers., at Kirkgunzeon. By the time of the 1929 register of voters, the four children had left home. George and Eveline were living at 93 Hope St, Glasgow. In 1930 they were at 61 Grant St, Glasgow. The valuation rolls show George now had an office Glasgow. The 1935-1938 rolls show Eveline's home address as 93 Hope St but claiming voter rights as proprietor of 61 Trefoil Ave, Galsgow. In the 1939 roll her home address was 2 Princes Terrace. The 1940 valuation Roll shows Eveline as the proprietor of both 61 and 63 Trefoil Ave, Glasgow, realising £265/15 per year (about £12,500 in 2024 terms).
George Lindsay FRASER died in Glasgow on 1 November 1936 following an operation to remove a carcinoma. His daughter Margaret was the informant on the death certificate.
It is not clear whether Eveline was still living in Glasgow at the time of George's death. Eveline Beatrice FRASER died in Leeds on 14 October 1948. Of the Children of George Lindsay and Eveline Beatrice FRASERGeorge Lindsay FRASER (1903-?): was born 17 February 1903 in Partick, Glasgow. By 1921 he was working with his father as an "assistant timber merchant" in Scotland. But his father died in 1936 and it appears he did not continue in the timber trade. By the time of the 1939 Register George was in London, working as a driver. He appears to have remained in London into the 1940s and then vanishes.
James Roy FRASER (1904-1967): was born in Glasgow on 14 December 1904. In 1921 he was with his father and brother in Kirkgunzeon working as an assistant timber merchant. By 1928 he was in Sweden where he formed a relationship with Karin Maria Victoria OSTER. They had a child - Bert Einar OSTER - born 4 September 1928 in Stockholm. But James did not stay in Sweden. It appears he returned to Britain where he enlisted in the Scots Guards in 1932. He rose to the rank of Warrant Officer Class II before being offered an emergency commission in 1941 when he became a CSM (Company Sargeant Major). He was pensioned out of the Scots Guards in 1943 Whilst still in the Scots Guards, James married Phyllis Ethel PARTRIDGE on 8 June 1943. Both were residing at Nigg Station, a remote locality north of Inverness in the Logie Easter District.. The ceremony appears to have taken place at Calrossie House, on the station. Phyllis was aged 31 and had recently obtained a divorce from Charles Vernon YOUNG. James and Phylllis had two sons - James Roy FRASER (23 January 1945-2017) and Richard Alistair (1948). It is not clear what James did after the Army but his marriage to Phyllis ended on 9 May 1952 when she obtained a divorce. His adddress at the time was Daltroy Camp, Pitlochry. We know little more about James until he wrote to the Scots Guards in 1961 asking if they could return his birth certificate. It appears he gave the wrong date of birth on enlisting in 1932 (15 December 1907), making himself 3 years younger. But this caught up with him when he had to wait an extra three years before he could obtain an increase in the Army pension. His address at the time was Scottish Special Housing Association, Greenfield Depot, Burnbank, Hamilton, Larnackshire
James Roy FRASER died of a heart attack on 14 October 1967, on Bardyke's Farm, Blantyre, southeast of Glasgow. He ex-wife Phyllis died in Inverness in 1997.
Eveline Ward FRASER (1908-1981): was born in Bridge of Weir, Scotland on 15 June 1908. She was recorded in the 1911 and 1921 censuses with her mother in Scotland. A few years later Eveline moved to London where she remained for the rest of her life. The 1936 electoral roll shows Eveline living at Kenilworth Hotel, 94-97 Great Russell St. The 1939 Register finds her at 43 Porchester Sq, but her occupation is unreadable. In the 1946 to 1948 rolls she was at 208 Walm Lane, Willesden. In 1950 to 1959 the address was 97 Anson Rd, Willesden. Then in 1964 she moved to 4A Victor Villas, Chiswick Common Rd.
Eveline Ward FRASER died at 4A Victor Villas, Chiswick Common Rd, London on 18 October 1981. She left an estate of £25,000. Margaret Ellen FRASER (1910-2004): was born 10 February 1910 in Bridge of Weir, Scotland. She was recorded with the family in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. By 1939 Margaret was living at 2 Regent St, Stoke on Trent and working as a "commercial demonstrator" but later became a portrait artist.
Margaret Ellen FRASER married Francis Joseph FRASER in Leeds in 1940. They had three children. Joseph LEE died in Leeds on 11 Juoy 1975. Margaret Ellen LEE died in Leeds on 20 September 2004. Both are interred in Killingbeck Catholic Cemetery, Leeds. Also recorded here is teir son Francis Joseph LEE who died 20 March 2006.
