They lived at Lambley Lodge, which Simpson had taken over from his father, John in 1864. Simpson and Sarah had six children:

In the 1871 census the family was at Lambley Lodge - Simpson, Sarah, Sarah (2) and unnamed (6 days - Mary Martha), with Simpson's Mother Elizabeth and Mary J Goodliffe (Simpson's sister), visitor, born Lambley Lodge.

In 1881 Simpson was a farmer of 250 acres, with wife Sarah and children Sarah, Mary, Clara and Ruth.

In 1891 at Lambley Lodge were Simpson, Sarah, children Mary and Arnold, and Simpson's brother William Frederick (retired manufacturer, aged 55).

In 1901 Simpson, Sarah and son Arnold were at Lambley Lodge.

In 1904 Simpson retired from farming, sold off his stock and leased Lambley Lodge to William Hornsby. He and Sarah moved into Corby Cottage in Belton where they were living with daughter Mary at the time of the 1911 census.

Soon after the 1911 census Sarah moved into Leicester, presumably to 6 Haynes Rd with her daughter. Sarah GOODLIFFE died in Leicester on 7 September 1911. She does not appear to have been buried at Belton St Peters and she is not mentioned on Simpson's headstone at St Peters.

Grantham Journal 16 September 1911.

After Sarah died, Simpson remained living with his daughter Mary at the cottage in Belton. The 1921 electoral roll shows he still owned land (Lambley Lodge) but was living in Belton, confirmed by the 1921 census.

Sarah Jane GOODLIFFE (1868-1938)

Sarah Jane was born at Lambley Lodge in late 1868. She was recorded there in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. In 1891 Sarah was working in a milliner's shop and boarding at 3 High St, Leicester.

Sarah Jane married Thomas WOOD in 1896. Thomas was a surveyor's assistant, born in Brighton in 1868 but, like Sarah, was working in Leicester by 1891. Thomas and Sarah had two children - twins - born in Sep 1898. One died at birth (not named but birth and death registered in Leicester), the other named Rose Emily who died in early 1899. In 1901 and 1911 Sarah and Thomas were living at 6 Haynes Rd, Leicester.

Sarah and Thomas remained living at 6 Haynes St, Leicester. Thomas died there on 26 April 1925 and Sarah Jane on 1 June 1938. In her Will, Sarah left her estate of nearly £2,000 to her two remaining siblings, brother Arnold Frederick and her sister Clara EliZa (COLLIER).

Mary Martha GOODLIFFE (1871-1937)

Mary Martha was born at Lambley Lodge in 1871. She lived with her father nearly all of her life, being recorded in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1911 censuses there. In 1901 she was living in Nottingham as a "Lady's Companion" to Johanna GOODLIFFE (n&eacte;e HASSAN), the widow of William GOODLIFFE. Although the census record shows Johanna as Mary's aunt, Mary was in fact William's first cousin once removed.

1901 census

Mary Martha did not marry. After living with Johanna in Nottingham Mary returned to look after her father Simpson at Belton, where she was recorded in the 1921 census. Her father Simpson left Lambley Lodge to her and her two siblings, but only Martha remained in Belton, being recorded there in the Electoral Roll for 1925 after Simpson had died. By the 1931 Roll she had moved to Leicester to live at 6 Haynes Rd with her sisters Sarah Jane WOOD and Clara Eliza COLLIER.

Mary Martha died at the Nursing Home, Scraptoft Lane, Leicester on 22 August 1937.

Clara Eliza GOODLIFFE (1873-1943)

Clara Eliza was born at Lambley Lodge in 1873 to Simpson and Sarah GOODLIFFE. She was recorded at Lambley Lodge in the 1881 census. By 1891 Clara was working as a drapery saleswoman in Nottingham, residing at 8 Clumber St. By 1901 she had moved to Norton, Derby, working as a drapery assistant.

Clara Eliza married Frank COLLIER on 31 March 1902 at Belton, Rutland, probably in the Baptist Chapel. Frank had been born in Flint, Wales in 1875.

Grantham Journal 5 April 1902.

Clara and Frank had two children:

By 1929 they had moved to "The Pines", Heswall, across the Mersey River on the Wirral.

Arnold Frederick GOODLIFFE (1884-1947)

Arnold Frederick was born at Lambley Lodge in mid-1884. Unlike his older siblings he does not appear to have been baptised at Belton St Peter. By 1901 Arnold had moved to Leicester to live with his sister Sarah Jane. Arnold was now a wireless operator. In September 1915 Arnold was appointed to the Post Office as a Certified Wireless Operator. By 1921 Arnold had moved to London, living at Flat 10 118 Long Acre, Covent Garden, with a Mrs Jessie Catherine KENNEDY (widow). He was still at this address with Jessie in the 1939 Register.

Who was Jessie Catherine KENNEDY?

Jessie had been born Jessie Catherine HART on 12 January 1863 at Poona, Bombay to Major Eugene Donald HART and his wife Caroline. She had married Major William KENNEDY on 8 March 1881 at Mhow, Bengal India. Jessie was only 17 year old. Jessie and William had one son - Charles William Edward, born Mhow India on 26 March 1882. Charles enlisted in the British Army at Mhow on 2 March 1898, joining the famous 17th Duke of Cornwall's Own Lancers (of Charge of the Light Brigade fame). Charles was in "C" Squadron and saw service in the Boer War in South Africa. On 17 Sept 1901 the 17th Lancers were attacked at Modderfontein by General Smuts and many were killed. Charles was wounded but died the next day. He is commemorated on a plaque at Aldershot, Hampshire.

In 1911 Jessie and William had retired to London and were living at Flat 10, 118 Long Acre, Covent Garden. Major Kennedy died in 1915 in London. Jessie remained at Flat 10, 118 Long Acre, with Arnold Goodliffe having moved in by the time the 1921 electoral roll was compiled.]

Despite living in London for many years, Arnold did not forget his family roots at Lambley Lodge Belton. In 1938 he donated £50 to the Belton Baptist Church for the installation of lighting. In the 1939 register Arnold and Jessie were still living at 118 Long Acre.

Jessie Catherine Kennedy died at St Stephens Hospital, Chelsea in December 1942, and was buried at Brompton Cemetery, Chelsea on 12 December 1942.

.

After Jessie died, Arnold moved to 23 Oakhill Gardens, Woodford Green. In 1947 he entered The Hospital Hammersmith where he died on 13 May 1947. Administration of his Will went to his niece Frances Lilian LEFTLEY.
