THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARD:Earlier Generations in Clifton, Ashbourne & Norbury, DerbyshireHumphrey FROGGATT (1750-1805)Humphrey FROGGATT was the sixth child of Humphrey FROGGATT and Mary (BOLTON) of Clifton, near Ashbourne Derbyshire. He had six children from his first wife mary YATES and four more from his second wife Mary FROGGATT (possibly his cousin). This is the story of Humphrey's life, with links to the lives of his children.
(Note: you can read through each page, or you can follow the links for the people in the tree for more information on each one. There is a link at the bottom of each page to bring you back here!) Humphrey FROGGATT (1750-1805)Humphrey was born in mid-1750 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised on 10 June 1750 at Norbury St Mary. (The parish record does not show it to be a private baptism).
Humphrey appears to have married Mary YATES on 4 July 1775 at Ellastone, Staffordshire (there is no image of the parish register available). They soon returned to the Clifton, Ashbourne area where they had six children.
Death of Mary FROGGATTOn 8 June 1792 Humphrey baptised his son John at Ashbourne St Oswald; John had been born on 20 May 1792. On that same day he also buried his wife Mary (YATES).
Marriage to Mary FROGGATTThe death of Mary left Humphrey a widower with 4 children aged between 16 and 4 so it is not surprising that Humphrey soon found a new wife. He married Mary FROGGATT at Ashbourne St Oswald on 12 November 1794. Undoubtedly this Mary was a relative, but it is not obvious which one.
Humphrey and his new wife Mary had four children, all baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald. The parish register shows they lived in Green Lane, a country lane that runs southeast from Norbury and is about 10 miles from Ashbourne.
Humphrey died at Bridge Gate, Ashbourne and was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 20 July 1805. It is not clear what happened to Mary FROGGATT.
The Children of Humphrey FROGGATT and Mary (YATES)Thomas FROGGATT (1776-?)Thomas was born in 1776 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Norbury St Mary on 26 December 1776. Constructing Thomas' life is not easy as Thomas FROGGATT was a common name throughout all the various Froggatt families in Derbyshire and also in Sheffield and Yorkshire. The problem was compounded at the time by the need for many young people to venture away from the local area for work. I cannot be sure what happened to this Thomas FROGGATT. Some family trees have him marrying Esther GOODALL based on the burial and headstone for a Thomas and Esther at Ashbourne St Oswald. The problem with this is the age of Thomas at death - the burial register has him aged 51 and the headstone 55, so born around 1759-1763. Although there is a discrepency, the ages are consistent enough to make it very unlikely that the 1814 burial was of the Thomas born in 1776 (and thus aged only 38). We can also rule out Thomas (1776) marrying Sarah SALT in Mayfield in 1802 as Thomas' signature on this marriage is identical to the signature for the Thomas who married Esther GOODALL two years later. The occupation of Thomas was the same for both marriages (cotton spinner). On the balance of evidence I conclude the Thomas who married Esther GOODALL was NOT the Thomas born to Humphrey and Mary in 1776. That means we do not know what became of Thomas, born 1776. Hannah FROGGATT (1780-?)Hannah was born in 1780 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. She was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 14 May 1780. She married John DAY at Ashbourne St Oswald on 1 Oct 1802. The marriage was by licence, issued at Burton on 30 Sep 1802. They were married the next day at Ashbourne. The distance from Buxton to Ashbourne is about 19 miles. It is not clear what happened to Hannah and John after marriage. It appears they moved to Tutbury, Staffordshire (for work I presume). At Tutbury there are parish records for a burial and births for children with Hannah and John as parents. I cannot find a baptism for Hannah DAY who was buried at Tutbury on 19 April 1803. Either she was born soon after Hannah and John married, or she was a twin of her sister Ann but died before being baptised. After the baptism of Elizabeth the family appear to have moved from Tutbury but it is not clear where they went.
Benjamin FROGGATT (1785-1862)Benjamin was born on 1 May 1785 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 22 May 1785. Benjamin married Sarah EYRE at Stoke on Trent on 7 April 1817. Sarah had been born in Radborough, Derbyshire in 1795 to Samuel and Sarah EYRE. Benjamin and Sarah had three children. There is more about the lives of Benjamin, Sarah and their children hereElizabeth FROGGATT (1788-?)Elizabeth was born on 24 Jan 1788 in Clifton Lane Ashbourne to Humphrey and Mary and baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 6 Feb 1788. It is not clear what happened to Elizabeth after this. The Children of Humphrey FROGGATT and Mary (FROGGATT)Humphrey FROGGATT (1797-1888)Humphrey was born on 24 Oct 1797 at Green Lane in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary (FROGGATT). He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 5 Nov 1797. Humphrey married Sarah SCOTHERN at Ashbourne St Oswald on 24 Dec 1821. At that time Humphrey was a cotton spinner.
By 1851 Humphrey and Sarah were living at Bollington Rd, Bollington, Cheshire where Humphrey was now a labourer. They were accompanied by his son Richard and his family and a James FROGGATT who I think was a nephew. Humphrey and Sarah later went back to the cotton industry, working there until Sarah died in 1878 and Humphrey in 1888. Sarah FROGGATT died in Macclesfield in 1878 and Humphrey in 1888. The Son of Humphrey and Sarah FROGGATT Richard FROGGATT 1823-1900 was born in Ashbourne on 7 Nov 1823 and baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 28 December 1823. The family moved to Cheshire to work in the cotton industry. Richard married Sarah HOWARTH at Bollington in 1845. They had nine children. Richard worked in the cotton industry as a "warper". Sarah died around 1890. Richard then married Sarah SUTCLIFFE (a spinster aged 48) on 2 Sep 1893 at Littleborough Holy Trinity. They did not have any children. Richard died at 10 Bamford St, Littleborough on 19 Jun 1900. He left a Will valued at around £400. Sarah died at Rochdale in 1907. Ellen FROGGATT (1800-1816)Ellen was born on 17 Feb 1800 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. She was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 16 March 1800. Sadly, Ellen died at Bridge Gate, Ashbourne and was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 1 Sep 1816. William FROGGATT (1802-?)William was born on 4 Oct 1802 at Green Lane, Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 14 Nov 1802. William probably married Lydia LUDLAM at Prestbury, Cheshire on 24 May 1833 as Banns were read for this couple at Ashbourne St Oswald on the preceeding Sundays. This MAY be the William born Clifton in 1802. Prestbury lies close to Bollington where William's siblings moved to work in the cotton trade so it is likely to be the right William. Unfortunately Lydia died in 1839, being buried at the Prestbury Chapelry of Bollington on 1 June 1839. It appears that William and Lydia had one child - John - born and died in early 1839. He does not appear to have been baptised. After Lydia's death William is hard to locate with certainty. There are too many Wiliam FROGGATTs born around 1802. John FROGGATT (1805-1888)John was born on 2 March 1805 at Green Lane, Ashbourne to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 24 March 1805. It is most lilely that John married Mary Ann HANDLEY at Ashbourne St Oswald on 28 Jun 1824. The element of doubt in this marriage is that John would have been aged 19 at the time. John and Mary had six children, all baptised at Matlock St Giles: There is more about the life of John and Mary Ann HEREBack to Froggatt Family History Last updated: 6 January 2023 |
