WILLIAM FROGGATT (1716-1786)

William FROGGATT was the oldest child of William FROGGATT and Mary (WOODHOUSE) of Clifton, near Ashbourne Derbyshire. He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 18 March 1716 (1717 in the modern calender). William married Prudence PALMER in 1739: they had seven children.

William FROGGATT (1716-1786)

William was born in Clifton, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire to William FROGGATT and his wife Mary (WOODHOUSE). He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 18 March 1716.

Marriage to Prudence PALMER

The first child of William and Prudence was baptised on 3 June 1738 at Norbury St Mary and buried there a few weeks later. The baptism notes the child was illegitimate - William did not marry the mother - Prudence PALMER - until 9 May 1739. There is no other information about Prudence. On her death in 1806 she was claimed to be aged 97, so was born in 1708. At that age Prudence would have been 30 when she had William. There are no furher records in Derbyshire that relate to Prudence.

William and Prudence then went on to have six more children, all baptised at Norbury St Mary.

William and Prudence remained in Norbury for the rest of their lives. William died there in October 1786 and was buried at Norbury St Mary on 13 October. Prudence outlived him by 19 years. She died in December 1805 aged 97 and was buried at Norbury St Mary on 10 December 1805.

The Children of William and Prudence FROGGATT

Thomas FROGGATT (1742 -1820)

Thomas FROGGATT was born in Clifton, Ashbourne in 1742 to William and Prudence. He was baptised at Norbury St Mary on 19 March 1742. He married Mary HARRISON at Etwall St Helen on 18 Sept 1762. Etwall is about 15 miles SE of Norbury. William was aged 20 but Mary (based on her age of 90 at death in 1821) would have been about 31.

Thomas and Mary had five children, all baptised at Norbury St Mary.

The Norbury church register entries are:

1763 baptism for Elizabeth FROGGATT at Norbury St Mary	1826 burial for Elizabeth (CLARK) at Norbury St Mary. Although her age is out by 2 years this is the only likely event.

The family appear to have lived at Roston, a farming locality less than a mile south of Norbury Church. Thomas FROGGATT died at Roston in 1820 and was buried at Norbury St Mary on 29 August 1820. Mary FROGGATT (nee HARRISON) died in 1821 and was buried at Norbury St Mary on 2 March 1821.

William FROGGATT (1749 - 1842)

William was baptised at Norbury St Mary on 11 February 1749 to William and Prudence FROGGATT. He married Elizabeth MELBOURNE at Norbury St Mary on 3 February 1779. Elizabeth was probably the daughter of James MELBOURNE and Elizabeth (SAUNDERS) and had been baptised at Duffield on 6 December 1755.

"William Froggatt labourer and Elizabeth MAULBOURN both of the Parish of Norbury in the County of Derby were married in the Church by Banns ... this third day of February 1779."

William and Elizabeth had nine children, all baptised at Norbury St Mary, although the presish records tell us that some of them were baptised privately.

William and Elizabeth lived the remainder of their lives at Roston. William was probably a farm labourer, but by the time of the 1841 census both were listed as "pauper". The listed ages, if correct would have William born around 1748 and Elizabeth around 1758 (the Duffield baptism was 1755). William died at Roston and was buried at Norbury St Mary on 25 March 1842. Elizabeth died in 1844 and was buried on 14 January 1844.

Mary FROGGATT (1759 - ?)

Mary was born in Norbury to William and Prudence FROGGATT and was baptised at Norwood St Mary on 12 August 1759. She married Anthony WOODHOUSE at Ashbourne St Oswald on 25 November 1784.

Anthony appears to have been born in Totley or Holmesfield near Sheffield and baptised there on 11 November 1744. After marriage Anthony and Mary lived in Totley, Holmesfield where they baptised a son - John - on 17 August 1788. There is a burial at Dronfield for an Anthony WOODHOUSE on 21 October 1789. This may be the correct person, if so it would explain why there are no more births for Mary and Anthony. Unfortunately Mary Woodhouse was a common name so it is not obvious what happened to Mary.
