THE FROGGATT FAMILY OF BREWHOUSE YARD:Earlier Generations in Clifton, Ashbourne & Norbury, DerbyshireHumphrey FROGGATT (1719-1786)Humphrey FROGGATT was the third child of William FROGGATT and Mary (WOODHOUSE) of Clifton, near Ashbourne Derbyshire, born in 1719. He married Mary BOLTON in 1736; they had 10 children. This is his family.
(Note: you can read through each page, or you can follow the links for the people in the tree for more information on each one. There is a link at the bottom of each page to bring you back here!) Humphrey FROGGATT (1719-1786)Humphrey was born in Clifton, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire to William FROGGATT and his wife Mary (WOODHOUSE). He was baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 5 April 1719. He married Mary BOULTON at Norbury St Mary on 14 February 1736. Humphrey was "of ye parish of Ashbourne" at the time.
Humphrey and Mary had 10 children. Most were recorded as having been baptised privately and then the certified event was entered into the Register of Norbury St Mary. This would suggest the baptism was conducted by a dissenting minister, such as Wesleyan.
Humphrey and Mary lived all their lives at Clifton, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Mary died in Clifton and was buried on 26 November 1784 at Norbury St Mary. Two years later, Humphrey died and was buried on 22 March 1786 at Norbury St Mary.
The Children of Humphrey and Mary FROGGATTMargaret FROGGATT (1739-1792)Margaret was born in 1739 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. She was baptised privately on 10 Jun 1739, probably by a travelling Wesleyan minister. The event was entered into the register at Norbury St Mary. Margaret married Joseph ARCHER at Shirley St Michael, near Ashbourne on 5 July 1762. Joseph was a "sojourner" - a person who was travelling so he had not disclosed his home parish. There is a baptism for a Joseph ARCHER at Stanton by Bridge, Derbyshire in 1741 to Joseph and Mary ARCHER but this Joseph married Sarah, was living in Stanton by Bridge in 1801 (according to a census taken by the church on 1 March 1801) and died there in 1807.
Joseph and Margaret ARCHER appear to have had three children - all born and baptised at Ipstones St Leonard near Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire:
Margaret ARCHER (née FROGGATT) died at Ipstones and was buried on 12 July 1792 at St Leonards. She was noted as a pauper, so the parish paid the burial costs. Unfortunately the burial record does not give any indication that Margaret was the wife of Joseph, as it does for other entries. At face value this suggests Joseph had died prior to Margaret (but his burial is not in the Ipstones register), or she was living alone. Nothing is known about Joseph. His baptism and burial are not in the parish records, unless he came from far beyond Derbyshire.
Ann FROGGATT (1744/45-1802)Ann was born in late 1744 or early 1745 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. She was baptised privately on 20 February 1744 (1745 in the modern calender), probably by a Wesleyan minister. The event was entered into the register at Norbury St Mary. Ann married William TWIGG on 23 October 1775 at Norbury St Mary.
Who was William TWIGG? There are several baptisms for a William TWIGG in Derbyshire and elsewhere; also several marriages for a William and Ann. After their marriage in 1775 William and Ann TWIGG are hard to find. There do not appear to be any children, unless baptised in non-conformist churches and not entered into the local church. There is a death for an Ann TWIGG in Matlock in 1802, wife of William TWIGG but this could be the Ann GREGORY who married a William TWIGG in Matlock. George FROGGATT (1747-1802)George was born in late 1747 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised privately on 3 October 1747 and the event was entered into the register at Norbury St Mary. Although there are marriages for a George in Norbury or Ashbourne in 1765 and 1769 these are likely to be for other George FROGGATTs, also this George would likely have been too young for these events. There is a marriage for a George FROGGATT at Sudbury (9 miles south of Ashbourne) in 1775 to Ann BENNET and this is likely to be him as this George was from the parish of Norbury and he would have been 28 by this time. Ann had been baptised in Sudbury on 18 July 1746 to John and Ellen BENNET.
George and Ann initially lived in Sudbury where they had two children, John and Hannah. They left there about 1778 but it is not clear where they went as further baptisms do not show up in the records until 1785 when they baptised Ellen and then Elizabeth in Tutbury, Staffordshire.
George and Ann appear to have remained in Tutbury for the rest of their lives as both died there and were buried at Tutbury St Mary.
Of the Children of George and Ann FROGGATT: John FROGGATT (1776-1845) was born in Sudbury Derbyshire in 1776 and baptised at Sudbury All Saints Church on 2 August 1776. John married Mary SMITH at Tutbury St Mary, Staffordshire on 24 December 1803. The records show only one child for John and Mary - Sarah FROGGATT born 16 Octotber 1804 and baptised at the Independent Chapel Tutbury on 18 November 1804. After this event John and Mary seem to vanish from the records. There are no more baptisms that can be attributed to this couple. They probably moved from Tutbury but their daughter married in Tutbury in 1831. They appear to be in the 1841 census at Hatton, Marston on Dove, a few miles away from Tutbury where they were working as cotton spinners.
Mary FROGGATT died at Hatton (presumably) in March quarter 1844 aged 65 and John in December quarter 1845 aged 68, both events being recorded at Burton on Trent. Their daughter Sarah married Joseph ELTON at Tutbury on 9 Mary 1831. Joseph had been born in Tutbury on 7 October 1814 and was baptised at Tutbury Independent Chapel on 18 November 1804 - in the same ceremony as his future wife Sarah. They had 6 children. In the 1841 census Joseph and Sarah were living at High St, Tutbury where Joseph was a wheelwright. They remained at High St Tutbury until Sarah died there in July 1874. She was buried at Tutbury St Mary on 5 July 1874. Joseph later moved to Monk St, Tutbury where he was joined by his son Joseph, also a wheelwright who had been widowed in . Joseph (snr) died at Barton on Trent in February 1889 and was buried at Tutbury St Mary on 22 February 1889. Sarah was buried at Tutbury St Mary on 5 July 1874. Joseph (snr) died at Barton on Trent in February 1889 and was buried at Tutbury St Mary on 22 February 1889.
Hannah FROGGATT (1778-1840) was born in Sudbury Derbyshire in 1778 and baptised at Sudbury All Saints Church on 7 June 1778. Although I am not certain, it appears Hannah probably married Joseph HOOSE at St Mary's Church, Marston on Dove, Derbyshire on 17 October 1796.
Joseph and Hannah HOOSE lived at Hilton, near Marston on Dove. They had seven children:
Hannah HOOSE (née FROGGATT) died at Hinton and was buried at St Mary's, Marston on Dove on 18 October 1840. Joseph remained at Hinton, as recorded in the 1841 census. He died at Hinton in 1842 and was buried at St Mary's on 12 March 1842.
Ellen FROGGATT (1785-1855) was born in Tutbury, Staffordshire in 1785 and baptised at Tutbury St Mary on 27 March 1785. She married William THORLEY (possibly at Tutbury) on 25 December 1806. They had three children that I can find: Sarah (1813), Hannah (1816) and Elizabeth (1822). Humphrey FROGGATT (1750-1805)Humphrey was born in mid-1750 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised on 10 June 1750 at Norbury St Mary. (The parish record does not show it to be a private baptism). Humphrey apperas to have married Mary YATES in 1775 at Ellastone, Staffordshire but soon returned to the Clifton area where they had six children. Mary died in 1792. Humphrey then married a Mary FROGGATT in Ashbourne in 1794 (Mary was probably a cousin but I cannot identify which Mary she is). They had three children. Humphrey died in Ashbourne in 1805. There is more about Humphrey and his family hereJohn FROGGATT (1752-1820)John was born in late 1752 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised privately on 26 December 1762 and the event was entered into the register at Norbury St Mary. John married Mary CLARK at Ashbourne St Oswald on 28 January 1788. John and Mary had four children before Mary died in October 1793, a few months after the birth of their youngest son John.
The four children of John and Mary were:
The year after Mary (CLARK) died, John married Mary MAKIN at Ashbourne St Oswald on 25 Aug 1794. John was aged about 42 and Mary about 41 and was recorded as a spinster. John and Mary (MAKIN) appear to have had only one child - Hannah - born 25 May 1795 (writing is difficult to read) at Compton and baptised at Ashbourne St Oswald on 31 May 1795. But Mary (MAKIN) died at Compton in August and was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 14 August 1795, aged 42. Their daughter Hannah died a few weeks later and was buried 4 September 1795, aged 3 months. John FROGGATT lived on at Ashbourne, dying at Church St in 1820. He was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 26 July 1820. Robert FROGGATT (1761- 1825)Robert was born in late 1761 in Clifton to Humphrey and Mary. He was baptised privately on 6 Dec 1761 and the event was entered into the register at Norbury St Mary. It is not certain what happened to Robert. He may have noved away from Ashbourne looking for work, but it is more liely that he died at Compton in 1772 and was buried at Ashbourne St Oswald on 6 Sept 1772.
