24 May 2025: Day 4

Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park

Introduction

Kangaroo Island is renowned for its wildlife, especially its koal population (estimated t 80,000 before the 2020 fite) and its endemic kangaroo, found only on the island. The Wildlife Centre was set up to care for injured and orphaned wildlife but has expanded in new premises to house a wide range of Australian and other forms of wildlife. It is one of the few places where you can get close to a kangaroo and even pat a koala. These animals have been raised in captivity so are not allowed to be released into the wild population - they have become too trusting.

Early morning at Kingscote and the pelicans were out for a feed.

Seal Bay

As its name suggests, Seal Bay is the home of a New Zealand fur seal population. At the time of our visit there were only a few mothers with nursing calves, some on the beach and some hidden in the bushes on the steep hillside.
