The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandStephen - 4th Son of Simmons MOULD and Anna CULPINStephen MOULD 1858-1930
Stephen MOULD was born in Wood Newton in 1858 to Simmons and Anna MOULD and baptised there on 21 November 1858.
Stephen was recorded in the 1861 and 1871 censuses with his family at Woodnewton. By 1881 he had been apprenticed to an ironmonger in Nottingham. Stephen and his brother William were boarding at 17 Wellington St, Nottingham, with Abigail THORPE, grocer.
Stephen married Emma Lavinia GOLLINGS in summer 1884. Emma had been born in 1860 to Robert GOLLINGS and Elizabeth (TUPLIN) farmers at Stilton Rd, Woodstone, Hunts. By 1881 the family was farming at Fletton Lodge, London Rd, Fletton, Hunts. Stephen and Emma had 5 children:
By 1891, Stephen and Emma were living at Leatherhead, Surrey, where Stephen had set up an ironmonger's shop and also selling glass and china.
Stephen and Emma remained living at Leatherhead. Around 1894 they moved into a new terrace house at 10 Queen Anne's Terrace and lived there for the rest of their lives. The house was built in 1894 according to the plaque on the wall.
Stephen MOULD died at 10 Queen Anne's Tce on 25 November 1930. Probate was granted to his two older sons, Arthur and Herbert. Emma remained at Queen Anne's Tce. In 1939 she was living with her daughter Constance (now estranged from husband Harold GAMBRELL). Emma died there in early 1946.
The Children of Stephen MOULD and Emma Lavinia GOLLINGSArthur MOULD 1885-1938Arthur was born in 1885 at Leatherhead and was recorded in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with his parents. Arthur became an ironmonger. He married Annie Eva HARRISON at Guildford St Mary on 4 Aug 1913.
Arthur and Emma had 3 children:
There is nothing further in the records until Arthur's death on 10 March 1938 at Allendale, London Rd, Guildford, Surrey. In 1939 Annie with daughters Phyllis and Doris were at Allendale.
Annie died in early 1977, presumably at Allendale. Of the three children:
Herbert Stephen MOULD 1887-1952Herbert Stephen was born in 1887 at Leatherhead and was recorded in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with his parents. He followed in the family business as an ironmonger. Herbert married Laura Lilian BROOKER at Ashtead St Giles and St George on 23 June 1920. Herbert and Laura did not have any children.
Herbert and Laura lived most of the rest of their lives in Ashtead. In 1939 they were living at Parkside Cottage, Epsom Rd. This is a substantial property on the corner of Epsom Rd and Park Lane.
Herbert Stephen died on 24 February 1952 at Leatherhead Cottage Hospital, from Tiny Cottage Needham, near Harleston, Norfolk. He was buried on 27 February 1952 in the churchyard at Ashtead St Giles and St George.
Laura Lilian (BROOKER) died 27 May 1974 at Batemans Burwash, Norfolk. Bateman's was the home of Rudyard Kipling. Robert Gollings MOULD 1889-1954Robert Gollings was born 2 April 1889 at Leatherhead. He is recorded in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses with the family. He also followed the family business to become an ironmonger. Robert married Julia Kathleen HEFFER in mid 1915.
Robert was called up for military service in 1916. He applied for a temporary exemption on the grounds that he employed 22 men, 2 boys and 3 females, many of whom had left for miiltary service. (It was not mentioned that he and Julia had just lost their first child, born and died in early 1916.) He was granted an exemption to 30 June 1916. Robert joined the Navy on 11 July 1916, . He left the Navy on 30 November 1917 to join the RAF. He rose to become an Aircraftsman I on 3 August 1917, then was transferred to the reserves on 27 Feb 1919 and discharged 30 April 1920. Robert and Julia had 3 children:
In 1939 Robert, Julia Joan and Barbara were living at Foxton, Leatherhead Rd, Ashtead. Robert was still an ironmonger and Joan was a shorthand typist.
Robert died 25 December 1954 at Foxton Lodge, Leatherhead Rd, Ashtead, Surrey. In the 1960 electoral roll, Julia was living at 18 Leatherhead Rd with Anthony H BILLINGTON. Her daughter Joan (now Joan ROWE) was at 10 Leatherhead Rd. Joan died at Cedar Lodge, Leatherhead Rd on 6 March 1976. The children of Robert and Julia: Constance Lavinia MOULD 1892-1969Constance Lavinia MOULD was born 27 December 1892 at Leatherhead. She is in the 1901 and 1911 censuses with her parents at Leatherhead. Constance married Harold Thomas Edmunds GAMBRELL in 1926. They did not have any children. At some point in time, probably around 1936, based on electoral rolls, Harold GAMBRELL departed and went to live at 129 Foxley Lane, Coulsdon, Surrey. Constance remaied with her mother at 10 Queen Anne's Tce, Leatherhead. Soon after Harold GAMBRELL departed, Constance's cousin, Joan HAYES moved in with harold as his wife and was styling herself as "Mrs H. GAMBRELL". Clearly this did not sit well with Constance. On 5 January 1939, Constance's uncle (and Joan's father) William Josiah HAYES died at the General Hospital, Northampton. His passing was well recorded in the local papers. Perhaps too well, as Mrs Constance Lavinia GAMBRELL (née MOULD) subsequently wrote to the paper to correct a small error in their report. SHE was Mrs H. GAMBRELL, a niece to William's wife Sarah, and she did NOT attend the funeral. The Mrs H. Gambrell reported in the paper was actually Miss Joan HAYES, William's daughter and thus Constance's cousin. What the letter did not reveal was that Miss Joan HAYES was now living with the same Mr GAMBRELL as his wife and was styling herself as "Mrs H. GAMBRELL" - so the reporter was technically correct. (Harold and Joan did eventually marry, in 1969 soon after Constance died, and when Joan was aged 60.)
Constance Lavinia MOULD died late 1969 at Leatherhead. Last updated: 11/12/2020 |
