The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandSarah Jane - Youngest daughter of Simmons MOULD and Anna CULPINSarah Jane MOULD 1869-1946Sarah Jane was born in Woodnewton on 13 Sept 1869. She lived there with the family until 1896 when she married William Josiah HAYES. William was a grocer and draper, born in 1869 in Elston, Hunts. to John Hall HAYES and Sarah (STRICKLAND).
After their marriage Sarah and William set up a drapery shop at the small village of Bozeat, a few miles east of Northampton. By 1901 they daughter Dorothy May with them, as well as William's mother. By 1911 they had four daughters.
Some time after 1911 William, Sarah and their daughters Dorothy and Norma took over the post office in London Rd, Bozeat. William Sarah and Dorothy lived in this building for the rest of their lives. Today the post office had moved to other premises, but the original building remains.
William Josiah HAYES died at the General Hospital, Northampton on 5 January 1939. His passing was well recorded in the local papers. Perhaps too well, as one of the family - Mrs Constance Lavinia GAMBRELL (née MOULD, married to Harold GAMBRELL) subsequently wrote to the paper to correct a small error. SHE was Mrs H. GAMBRELL, a niece to William's wife Sarah, and NOT invited to the funeral, whereas the Mrs H. Gambrell reported in the paper was actually Miss Joan HAYES, William's daughter and Constance's cousin. What the letter did not reveal was that Miss Joan HAYES was now living with the same Mr GAMBRELL as his wife and was styling herself as "Mrs H. GAMBRELL" - so the reporter was technically correct. (Harold and Joan did eventually marry, in 1969 soon after Constance died, and when Joan was aged 60.)
Sarah the widow and two of her daughters remained at Bozeat, taking over the post office. Jane died at Bozeat on 10 March 1946.
The children of Sarah Jane MOULD and William HAYESDorothy May HAYESDorothy May was born 16 May 1897 at Bozeat. She appears to have lived all of her life in the village, taking over the Post Office in 1939 after her father died. Some time after her sister Norma died in 1982 she moved into the Mt Pleasant Retirement Home at Finger Post Lane, Norley, near Liverpool, where she died 28 Oct 1989 aged 92. Norma Mould HAYESNorma Mould was born 1 May 1901 at Bozeat. She lived with her sister Dorothy all of her live at Bozeat, dying at 70 London Rd, Bozeat (the Post Office) on 28 August 1982. Her estate was valued at £25,000. Mabel Strickson HAYESMabel Strickland was born 1903 in Bozeat. She married William BICKEL in 1929 with the event recorded at Wellingborough. William BICKEL was proably born in the United States around 1899 and travelled to England in 1928. The shipping record claims he was an "engineer". Soon after marriage the couple were living in Wales. They had one child - Jenifer (sic) May BICKEL born in Wales in 1931 (Swansea Dec 1931 11a/1416).
After that the family vanish. Perhaps William took the family back to the USA but there are no records clearly linked to this family. There is a death for a Mabel BICKEL in Surrey in 1962 but there was another Mabel BICKEL, married to Albert BICKEL also born 1903 and recorded in the 1939 register in Surrey. Joan Sarah HAYESJoan Sarah was born 24 August 1909 at Bozeat. She was listed with her family in the 1911 census. At some point in time, probably between 1937 and 1938 she moved to 129 Foxley Lane, Coulsdon, Surrey with Harold Thomas GAMBRELL and styled herself as Mrs GAMBRELL. Harold had married Joan's cousin Constance Lavinia MOULD in 1926 and until this time had lived at 10 Queen Anne's Terrace, Leatherhead, Surrey. In the 1939 Register Joan "Gambrell" is listed as "Statistical Assistant" to Harold. It appears Joan and Harold continued to live together. Harold's wife Constance died in late 1969, allowing Harold and Joan to marry, which they did almost immediately in late 1969. Harold died on 30 April 1980 at 4 Benson Close, Bransgore, Christchurch, Bournemouth. Joan died in 1989 (Mar quarter Poole 23/858). Little more is available about Joan and Harold apart from a photograph on an Ancestry tree.
