Sarah Ann BOWCHER (1831-1881)

Sarah Ann was born 20 July 1831 at York St and baptised at St Marylebone on 17 August 1831. After her parents died in 1843 she and her sister Henrietta appear to have been living with their cousin Susanna GRIMES at 84 Gt Devon St, Newington, as shown in the 1851 census:

Sarah Ann married William Joseph SAUNDERS at St Paul Covent Garden on 17 January 1853. William stated he was a farmer from Rugeley, Staffordshire, as was his father Thomas Samuel.

Who was William Saunders? William had been born at Huyton, east of Liverpool, Lancashire in 1820 to Thomas and Elizabeth and had been baptised at the local St Michael's Church on 4 September 1820. His father was recorded as a groom. By 1851 William and his father had moved to a farm at Hazle Slade (now Hazel Slade), Hednesford, Rugeley, Staffordshire where they had established a successful horse training business. William's sister (Mary Ann) married the famous jockey Charles Marlow who is perhaps best remembered today for his association with Lord Eglington's horse The Flying Dutchman, on which he won the Derby, and St. Leger. In 1841 William and his father had 4 servants working in the horse training business, and by 1851 they had 12 ranging in age from 13 to 36.

1841 census for Thomas SAUNDERS and family, horse trainers at Hednesford, Staffordshire.

1851 census, William was now the head trainer.

1861 census, William was now the head trainer with 14 servants and stable boys.

William and Sarah had nine children. although three do not appear in the official records, only the census and baptisms:

By the time of the 1871 census the family had grown to nine children. By 1881 William and Sarah had only two children, Henrietta and Samuel, left at home. Samuel was the only son to remain in the horse training business.

1881 census.

Sarah Ann SAUNDERS (née BOWCHER) died at Hednesford in mid-1881. William Joseph SAUNDERS died there on 23 March 1884. In August 1884 their son Samuel was advertising for patronage to continue with the horse training business but this did not last long as he died in 1885, aged 24. By the time of the 1891 census the family had left Hazle Slade Farm.

The children of Sarah Ann and William SAUNDERS

William SAUNDERS (1854-?)

William was the oldest child of Sarah and William, born 1854 at the farm at Hazle Slade, Hednesford and baptised at Cannock St Luke on 11 January 1854. It is not clear what happened to William. He is recorded in the 1861 census but not any later so may have died. There are several William Saunders born in the Hednesford/Cannock/Rugeley around this time. There are three candidate marriage records for a William Saunders, but none are for the correct person: 1873 to Mary Wright at Hednesford, but William's father was John Saunders, a miner; 1877 to Clara Salt at Stoke on Trent, but father was John Saunders, a collier; and 1898 at Brereton St Michael to Bertha Craddock, but this William was born in Pelsall Staffordshire to John Saunders, coal miner.

Sarah Ann SAUNDERS (1855-1873)

Sarah was born 1855 at Hednesford and baptised at Cannock St Luke on 22 February 1855. She died there in October 1873, aged 18 and was buried at Cannock St Luke on 9 October 1873.

Henrietta SAUNDERS (1856-?)

Henrietta was born at Hednesford in late 1856 and baptised at Cannock on 4 September 1856. She was recorded with the family in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses at Hazle Slade, but after this date she vanishes from the records.

George SAUNDERS (1857-?)

George was born at Hednesford in late 1857 and baptised at Cannock St Luke on 29 December 1857. He was recorded with the family in the 1861 and 1871 censuses at Hazle Slade but after that vanishes from the records.

Mary SAUNDERS (1859-?)

Mary was born at Hednesford in 1859 and baptised at Cannock on 7 November 1859. She was recorded with the family in the 1861 and 1871 censuses at Hazle Slade farm.

1859 baptism for Mary SAUNDERS.

In 1881 she was visiting Mary GUMAN, a dressmaker in Aston, Warwickshire. Her parents died soon after, in 1884. In 1891 she was a servant in Handsworth, Staffordshre. She is absent from the 1901 census but reappears in 1911 as a maid for Mabel Taverner (née BUTT) in Nottingham. Mary is not recorded in the 1939 register so had probably died by this time. There are several possible death records for Mary. It would appear that Mary never married.

Samuel SAUNDERS (1861-1885)

Samuel was born at Hednesford in 1861 and baptised at St Lukes, Cannock on 24 February 1861. He was recorded in the 1871 and 1881 censuses at the Hazle Slade farm. He appears to be the only son who remained with the horse training business. After his parents in 1884 Samuel tried to retain the training business. He advertised later in 1884 for patronage from horse owners but it is unclear whether this happened. Regardless, the business did not survive as Samuel died at Hednesford in March 1885 and was buried at St Lukes, Cannock on 24 March 1885, aged 24.

Helen SAUNDERS (1862-1956)

Helen was born at Rugeley on 12 December 1862 and baptised at St Michaels, Brereton on 17 February 1863. (Why the move from St Lukes to St Michaels we will not know.) She was recorded in the 1871 census at the Hazle Slade farm, aged 8. In 1881 she was working as a governess for the Wood family at Brampton, Newcastle. She is absent from the 1891 census but by 1901 she was the housekeeper for Henry Hopkinson in Nottingham. In 1911 she was the sick nurse for Henry CANTELO, retired silk merchant in Nottingham.

(In a quirk of history, Henry Cantelo had married my great-great Aunt, Anne FROGGATT in 1856. They had three children but Anne died in 1866. Henry then married Ellen MILNER and they had two children, including Edith Ellen who is in the 1911 census with Henry. Ellen died in 1909.) Henry died at 322 Mansfield Rd on 12 December 1912, presumably with Helen Saunders in attendence.

There are no more records for Helen until the 1939 register. Assuming we have the correct person, Helen has now retired to 18 Fleetwood Rd, Leicester. The facts are consistent - Helen Saunders, single, born 12 December 1862 (she was baptised 17 February 1863).

1901 census for Helen SAUNDERS at Nottingham.

1911 census for Helen SAUNDERS at Nottingham.

1939 census for Helen SAUNDERS at Nottingham.

If we have the correct Helen in 1939, then it appears she died at Hillcrest, 2 Swain St,Leicester (late of 18 Fleetwood Rd) on 15 January 1956, aged 93.

Jesse (Jessy, Jessie) SAUNDERS (1865-?)

Jessie was born at Hednesford in 1865 and baptised at St Michaels, Brereton on 17 August 1865. She was baptised and her birth registered under Jessy, but appears in the 1871 census as Jesse and later as Jessie. In 1871 she was with her family at Hednesford, but in 1881 she and her sister Ruth were at a school in Aston, Birmingham. The 1891 census is problematic. Jessie was recorded at 16 Sheep St, Rugby working at a stationer's shop. Name, age and place of birth match but she is shown as the daughter of Martha Read - I think the enumerator made a mistake. By 1901 she was in Leicester, as the companion to Helen Moore. In 1911 she was a visitor to Samuel and Sarah Walker at 14 Wiverton Rd, Nottingham, close to where her sister Helen was living.

1891 census for Jesse at 16 Sheep St, Rugby..

1901 census for Jessie SAUNDERS at 38 Springfield Rd, Leicester.

1911 census for Jessie SAUNDERS at 14 Wiverton Rd, Nottingham.

After 1911 Jessie disappears. It would seem unlikely that she married (she was aged 46 in 1911) and she is not in the 1939 register.

Ruth SAUNDERS (1868-1948)

Ruth was born at Hednesford on 14 May 1868 and baptised at St Michaels, Brereton on 13 June 1868. By 1881 she was at school with her older sister Jessie in Aston, Birmingham. In 1887 she was appointed to the Post Office in Lichfield as a clerk and telegraphist. In 1891 she was boarding at 17 Bird St, Lichfield and in 1901 was boarding at 41 St John St.

1887 appointment of Ruth to the Post Office as a clerk.

1891 census for Jesse at 17 Bird St, Lichfield.

1901 census for Jessie SAUNDERS at 41 St John St, Lichfield.

Ruth married Richard Arthur PRATT at Lichfield in mid-1901. Richard was a draper with his own shop in Langley, Staffordshire. They had four children, but one, a twin, died just after birth: Hilda (1902), Dorothy (1902-1902), Maud Ruth (Dec 1903) and Leslie William (Mar 1910).

1911 census for Ruth and Richard PRATT and family at 4 Station Rd, Langley .

1939 census for Ruth and Richard PRATT at 197 Westminster Rd, Birmingham.

Richard PRATT died at the Western Rd Infirmary, Birmingham on 23 February 1945, late of 195 Westminster Rd, Handsworth, Birmingham. Probate was granted to Hilda and Leslie Pratt, two of his children rather than Ruth his wife. I cannot find a definitive death for Ruth. The death in Dec 1948 registered at Bilston, Staffordshire may be her. The age of 80 is consistent.

1945 probate for Richard PRATT.

The children of Ruth and Richard PRATT:
Hilda PRATT was born in 27 March 1902 and registered at West Bromwich. She is in the 1911 census with the family at Langley, Worc. Hilda did not marry. She is named in the 1945 probate for her father Arthur so was still alive and a spinster. The most likely record in the 1939 register for Hilda is her working as a hotel assistant at the George Hotel, Load St, Bewdley, Worcestershire.

1939 census for Hilda PRATT at the George Hotel, Bewdley.

The George Hotel, Bewdley.

Headstone at St Leonard's Churchyard, Ribbesford, Worcs.

Maud Ruth PRATT was born in late 1903 and was with the family at Langley in 1911. After that Maud is difficult to find. She may have married but a marriage record is not obvious. She dies not appear in the 1939 register and she was not named in her father's 1945 probate.

Leslie William PRATT was born 12 December 1909 in Wolverhampton. We can be confident of this being the correct person as he was enrolled at St Peter's Collegiate School (Infants) at Wolverhampton on 14 August 1914. His father's name was Richard and home address was 244 Staveley Rd. Leslie wasrecorded with the family at Langley in 1911. Leslie married Gertrude Lucie HUMPHRIES in Birmingham in 1938. They had two children, one born 1939 the other in 1945. In the 1939 register Leslie William PRATT and family were living at 27 Green Drive, Wolverhampton.Leslie was working for a life assurance company. Leslie enlisted in the Army during the war, as he was a Private in the Army in 1945 when he was named as an executor of his father's Will.

Leslie William died in Wolverhampton on 15 December 1967, aged 58. His wife Gertrude died on 25 February 1985, aged 71. Both were buried at Bushbury Crematorium, Wolverhampton.
