Agnes ABERCROMBIE (1825-1909)

Archibald ABERCROMBIE and Agnes ROBERTSON had seven children. This is the story of their oldest child - Agnes. You can return to Archibald's story here, or use the link at the bottom of this page.

Agnes ABERCROMBIE - William EADIE

Agnes ABERCROMBIE was born around 1825 in Glasgow to Archibald and Agnes. She does not appear to be in the birth records so we do not have an exact date, only her age from the census records. Agnes married William EADIE in Glasgow on 31 December 1850. William was a warehouseman, born about 1824 in Cambuslang, Glasgow to John and Margaret EADIE. In the 1851 census William and Agnes were living at 128 Great Hamilton St, Glasgow, whereas Agnes' mother (Agnes) was at 76 Great Hamilton St. This street no longer exists, parts becoming London Rd, but there are old photographs of it.

Agnes and her spinster daughters remained at Avondale Tce, being there in 1901, but she now has a grandchild. Agnes died there on 27 January 1909.

The Children of Agnes ABERCROMBIE and William EADIE

Agnes EADIE: Agnes was born 31 August 1851 in Glasgow. She lived with her mother all her life, never marrying. After her mother died in 1909 Agnes and her spinster sisters Eliza and Wilhelmina remained at 248 Paisley Rd West.

1911 census for Agnes EADIE and sisters.

Margaret EADIE: Margaret was born 13 Mar 1854 in Glasgow. She is not in the 1861 census with the family, as she had died of Scarlet Fever on 22 Dec 1858 at 184 Hospital St, Glasgow.

1858 death record for Margaret EADIE.

Eliza Abercrombie EADIE: Eliza was born 1857 in Tradeston, Glasgow. She lived with her mother and sisters all her life, never marrying. After her mother died in 1909 Eliza remained at 248 Paisley Rd West, dying there in 7 December 1920.

John WYLIE EADIE: John was born 27 January 1862 in Tradeston, Glasgow. He became a marine engineer. He married Catherine (Kate) Scott GILMOUR in 1883 at Govan, Glasgow. In 1890 he was recorded on the electoral roll at 26 Watt St, Glasgow, close to where his parents were living in Paisley St West.

1890 electoral roll for John W. EADIE.

John Wylie and Catherine (Kate) had six children, although there is some confusion: it appears Janet was recorded as Jennie on some occasions:

Janet 12 Jan 1884
Agnes 1 Nov 1885
Rachel G. 1890
Mary G. 1891
William 1895
Catherine 1895

Jennie EADIE does not appear in the birth records, although it is possible for her to have been born in late 1884/early 1885.

1885 birth record for Agnes EADIE.

In 1891 Kate with her three daughters was living at 141 Paisley Rd. John was absent, possibly at sea. in 1901 Kate was living at Manse Rd Dunoon, John was again absent.

1901 census for Agnes EADIE.

John Wylie EADIE died at Mary St, Dunoon on 12 November 1909 of Bright's Disease (failure of kidneys).

1909 death record for John Wylie EADIE.

Catherine remained in Dunoon. In 1911 she was a boarding house proprietor. She had children William and Catherine G. with her. The other people listed on the census are I think, visitors/boarders.
Catherine EADIE/GILMOUR died in Dunoon on 16 May 1940, aged 78. The informant was her granddaughter Jean GIBSON.

Jane EADIE: Jane was born 27 February 1864 in Tradeston, Glasgow. She can be found in the census through to 1891, but after her father died in 1900 she disappears. There is a death in 1949 for a Jane EADIE but this was the daughter of John and Margaret Eadie of Falkirk.

Williamina EADIE: Born 27 January 1862 in Tradeston, Glasgow. Her name caused confusion as she was recorded later as Wilhelmina and sometimes Wilhelmine (her death record indicates she changed her name to this version). She did not marry. In the 1938 electoral roll, she was living with her sister Agnes and their niece Rachel Gilmour EADIE at 24 Camphill Ave, Pollok, Glasgow. Wilhelmine died at this address on 6 April 1939. The informant was her niece Rachel.
