The Tower of London

I started out early in the day to get to the Tower at opening time. Decided that the Underground was the ideal way to get there  from Charing Cross, but the management had decided that today was the ideal time to close that line for maintenance. So the bus it was, and a good choice too, taking me right to the Tower. No crowds, so no long queue at the ticket counters, and I was through the gates of the Tower within minutes of them opening. Being Sunday morning, the crowds were light and it was easy to walk around and take time to examine the place.

The Outer Walls

Looking back towards the main entrance, the Thames is over the wall on the left
First thing you see is the old entry and escape route, now firmly barred - Traitors Gate
Up on the wall beside the Thames.
A view from the wall to Tower Bridge
The reverse view back along the wall. Again the Thames is on the left, with Traitors Gate partly visible below the wall
Tower with sundial
Up close to the sundial. It is running a bit fast - the photo was taken at 10.24....
The old and the new - A female Beefeater beneath gas lamp, with the infamous "gherkin" in the background
The Dark Tower
and up close to the weather vane
The ubiquitous raven digging up the turf....
...and posing on a bronze cannon.

The inner towers

Beefeater quarters within the Tower,
and a closer view
The White Tower containing the Crown Jewels
A selection of flintlocks.....
...are artistically displayed
More flintlock pistols and rifles
and more rifles
The cavalry, beautifully carved horses created to display armour
The horses head-on.
This guy could sell used cars anywhere if he decided to retire ...
The view he was expounding on. Looking across the raven's lawn to the outer wall, beside the Thames
Another view of the Tower..

The Tower from the Thames

From Tower Bridge
The outer wall beside the Thames
From the ferry
Traitors Gate from the inside of the wall...
..and the outside of the wall,,,
and from the Thames.
