Hyde Park Corner

Hyde Park Corner has become the home to various war memorials. As it is quite close to Buckingham Palace, just a short walk up Constitution Hill, I thought I should visit the place, especially to view the New Zealand memorial. From there, I could cross the road to Hyde Park itself. So first the memorials.

The Wellington Arch in the middle of Hyde Park Corner. It must be one of the few places in the world where the traffic lights control horse traffic....
The Australian War Memorial. It a a massive structure of polished and engraved diorite, with the name of every place in Australia represented. It is a very clever piece of art, but rather boring and traditional.
A close-up view of one of the panels.
Diagonally across the park from the Australian Memorial is the New Zealand one. At first glance it is a collection of posts, reminiscent of a ransacked stockade or pa site....
..but close up is is a clever alignment of crosses....
.. that march over the hill.
Each cross is engraved. The silver fern...
the WWI Maori Pioneer Battalion

and lastly, The Ode.

I walked across to Hyde Park itself and strolled around some of the grounds. It is a large park, with a large lake in the centre. Despite the bright sunshine there was a cool wind blowing so I was not tempted to walk too far.

Horses and riders nearing the main gates.
The squirrels knew all about tourists.
The Achilles Statue just inside the main gates.
One of many flower beds.
