The Children of Margaret Henrietta and Thomas GODDEN
Clarence Porter GODDEN
Clarence Porter GODDEN was born 3 August 1864 at Clarenceville, Quebec. (This is also the location given on his death record as
supplied by his wife Marion, but note that some records suggest he was born in Clarenville, on the island of St Pierre and Miquelon,
Newfoundland. There are no other family records for this remote location so Quebec is most likely.)
His name possibly reflects the town of his birth. His middle name of
Porter comes from the surname of his mother's half-sister Jane Porter.
Clarence Porter married Marion Horton CUMINES at Trinity Church, Welland, Ontario on 9 June 1897 in what appears to have been
a notable society event. The ceremony was performed by Clarence's father (Rev Thomas GODDEN) and his brother (Rev Keith GODDEN M.A.). After
the ceremony the couple departed by train to Toronto for a reception at their home.
From an early age Clarence worked as a clerk in a hardware store, later owning his own store. He moved to Toronto where, by the time of his marriage, he was living
at 9 Harbord St (now part of the Univeristy of Toronto) and working at 169 King St East.
Clarence and Marion had 4 children, two of whom died in infancy. The name of their 3rd child is clearly ELLEN on the birth record and on the
the 1921 census, but she appears to have been known as Helen in later life.

Seeking information about his grandfather Danieth KEITH. John Keith became an ordained minister, as was his father Thomas, his father-in-law and his great-grandfather (Daniel KEITH). This succesion of
ministers apparently impressed John, as did his academic success in gaining an M.A.degree as he is widely referred to as the Rev. John
Godden M.A. His grand-father the Rev. Dr Daniel KEITH D.D. had spent time in Canada and had returned to Britain where he was awarded his
Doctor in Divinity
degree from St Andrews Univerity in 1809. Apparently John Keith had inheritied the degree testimonial but wanted to know more about its
circumstances. So, on 31 May 1901, from his home in Acton, Ontario
Rev John Godden wrote to the Registrar of St Andrews University in Scotland asking him
to verify that Daniel Keith was indeed awarded the D.D degree. He was supported in his quest by Rev. William Clark D.D., Professor of Mental
and Moral Phillosophy at Trinity University, Toronto (where John Keith obtained his M.A.). His letter follows:
|
Acton, Ont(ario) Canada May31/01 The Registrar of St Andrew's University. Dear Sir
I am desirous of ascertaining a very important piece of information, namely a claim to our family connections in Scotland
|
|
or England as the case may be and I take the liberty of asking you if you will be good
enough to help me find them out through the information I can lay before you. I am a clergyman of the Church of England,
ordained in Toronto by the present bishop in 1889, being at the time 23 yrs of age and having served six years in that
Diocese, I then came
|
|
over to this, the Diocese of Niagara and in this little town (Acton) I have lived for over six years. My
name in full is Rev. John Keith Godden m.a. a graduate of Trinity University, Toronto. On Wed. last I called to
see Rev. Wm Clark D.D. Prof of Mental and Moral Philosophy at Trinity University, and he advised me to write you
on the subject, though neither of us know your name, but he thought that by writing to you you would look up the
|
|
register of the University and find the name of my Great-Grandfather and so
open up a means by which we may ascertain the names of some of the family now living in the old country.
My great-grandfather's name was Rev Daniel Keith a Presbyterian clergyman. who took his D.D.degree
by examination at St Andrews University in 1809, of which university he was previous -ly a graduate, and at the time of taking the D.D.
degree was Head master at Kent House Hammersmith.
|
|
I have in my possession the testimonial of his D.D. degree with the seal of the
University attached, made of some composition, on which is impressed the figure of St Andrew, crucified, and this
seal encased in a small tin box.
The said Rev Daniel Keith had a school in Quebec, and entertained the Duke of Kent when he visited Canada.
No doubt it was after this he was appointed Head- master at Kent House Hammersmith, and most
|
|
likely called the school after the Duke of Kent. He was married in Three
Rivers, Quebec, to Jane Macpherson:- their daughter was Mary (Keith) who married John Blackwood a notary public of Montreal, whose
daughter Margaret Henrietta married Rev Thomas Godden my mother and father respectively, the said Rev. Daniel Keith
lived and died at Hammersmith.
Now if you would be good enough to look up the university register, in
|
|
regard to the degree of the Rev. daniel Keith and could give me any
clues as to the family I would be very much obliged to you I am Yours sincerely J.K. Godden
|
John Keith died 19 March 1913 at the hospital in Hamilton Ontario, Canada. He had been admitted with appendicitis.
Nina is in the 1921 census living at Haldimand, with her young son John Herbert and her mother Fanny ROSS.
1921 Census |
After the 1921 census Nina Mary GODDEN disappears from the records. Her son John Herbert GODDEN turns up in the voter lists at
Dryden, Ontario working in the timber mill. He had married Margaret Dorothy GIBSON in 1949 at Fort William (Thunder Bay). It appears that he died in 1998.
