22 May 2025: Day 2

Auckland to Adelaide to Kangaroo Island

Introduction

The flight to Adelaide left early - 0830 - so we stayed the night at the Heartland Hotel in Auckland and used their shuttle to travel the short distance to the terminal. The flight to Adelaide took only 5 hours so we arrived at 1055 local time. The taxi dropped us at the bus depot where we stored our bags in a locker, then went looking for the tram to the beach at Glenelg. The tram rumbled through central Adelaide then through the suburbs, arriving at the terminus at Glenelg. A quick look at the beach (it was a bit windy) then a local cafe for lunch. The tram took us back to Adelaide and the central markets.

A short wait and our bus to Cape Jervis arrived. The bus trip is 2.5 hours and went via various suburbs and towns, including Flinders University and Normanville before arriving at the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis. The ferry was waiting for us so after parking our luggage in the ferry trolley and getting our boarding passes we boarded and were off to Kangaroo Island. It was pitch black when we arrived at Penneshaw Kangaroo, the rental car depot had been relocated due to terminal and road reconstruction but eventually we found the office and obtained the keys. After a long discussion about driving at night and not hitting the bouncy wildlife we headed off to our hotel at Kingscote. The 40 minute drive took 70 minutes in the dark; we travelled at a speed where had a chance of dodging the kangaroos. We arrived safely at the Ozone Hotel at about 1950hr and managed to talk the dining room into staying open for our dinner.
