The Goodliffe Family of Lambley Lodge, RutlandSasmuel Goodliff RICHMOND (1842-1883) Older son of Thomas Richmond and Mary Culpin KERFOOT
Samuel Goodliff RICHMOND was born in late 1842 at Kings Cliffe, and was baptised at All Saints, Kings Cliffe on 25 March 1845. In the 1851 census he and his brother Thomas were living with their grandmother at Kings Cliffe. He remained with his grandmother in 1861, working as an ag. labourer: Soon after the 1861 census Samuel must have moved to London. It appears he went to live with his uncle George Strickland RICHMOND who was working as a cab driver in Chelsea. George had married Margaret POWELL, from Wales, in 1854. It was not long before Samuel married Margaret's sister, Jane POWELL on 11 March 1865, in St Lukes, Chelsea, London. George RICHMOND was the witness at the wedding. In the 1861 census George and Margaret were living at 2a Pond Place Chelsea, and this was Samuel and Jane's residence at the time of marriage. Jane had been born in South Wales in 1842 and Margaret in 1827 to David Powell and Mary (nee Williams):
Samuel and Jane had three children born in London - Sarah Jane, George Goodliff and Rebecca Louisa. The three children were baptised at Lambeth St Thomas on 26 June 1870.
In the 1871 census they were all living at 25 Oakleigh St, Lambeth, London. Samuel was still a carpenter: On 13 April 1872 the family boarded the ship "Queen of Nations" at Plymouth bound for Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The ship was a wooden clipper, 845 tons, built in Aberdeen in 1861. On this voyage she had 322 people onboard. She was wrecked on the coast just north of Wollongong, NSW on 31 May 1881.
After arrival in Melbourne Samuel and Jane had two more children, so the family was:
We know little about the family in Melbourne. Their daughter Rebecca Louisa died in Melbourne in 1876, aged 6 years. Samuel died at 45 Elizabeth St North, Melbourne on 3 Jun 1883. The newspaper reports him as Mangle maker, late 308 Oxford St London. This was the address and occupation of his late uncle Samuel Goodliff RICHMOND, who died in London in 1871.
A few years later, on 7 April 1887 Jane married Thomas REECE. Jane died on 11 April 1912 at her son-in-law's residence 17 Brighton Rd, St Kilda. The newspaper report is difficult to read but it mentions Jane's son-in-law Mr E NANKIVILL, 17 Brighton Rd, mother of George G RICHMOND of Dinsdale St, Albert Park and Mrs C. WENDT, of Waverley St, Richmond, aged 72 years:
The Children of Samuel Goodliff RICHMOND and Jane POWELLGeorge Goodliff RICHMONDGeorge Goodliff RICHMOND was born in London in 1867, the first child of Samuel and Jane RICHMOND. The family emigrated to Melbourne Australia in 1872. George married Ellen EDWARDS in Melbourne in 1890. They had two children: Leslie George born 5 November 1862 and Edwin Goodliff RICHMOND born 1895. We do not know much more about George. He died in Victoria on 29 May 1949. The probate index records him as a mill employee. I cannot find a death for Ellen. The children of George and Ellen: Leslie George RICHMONDLeslie George RICHMOND was born in Carlton, Melbourne on 5 November 1892, the older son of George Goodliff RICHMOND and Ellen EDWARDS. Despite his father being a carpenter and mange-maker, Leslie went into music and excelled as a pianist, organist and composer. He joined Hugh & Edith HUXHAM to form "The Serenaders" a talented song-dance-comedy group that toured Australia in the 1920s. Les RICHMOND married Selena DEAN in Melbourne in 1918 and they had one child - Lesley Lora Margot RICHMOND, born 2 April 1928. There is more about Leslie's life and family here.Edwin Goodliff RICHMONDEdwin Goodliff was born in 1895 in Melbourne. He enlisted in the Army in 1916, becoming an aircraft mechanic. He served overseas but was invalided out in 1918 suffering from dyspepsia. It appears that Edwin never married. He died in Albert Park, Melbourne on 30 October 1966. Florence Sarah Margaret RICHMONDFlorence Sarah RICHMOND was born in Hotham, Melbourne on 7 July 1875. She married Edwin NANKIVELL in 1895 in Victoria. They had three children: Edwin Goodliff (1896-1957), Jack Edward (1905-1973), Florence Stella Perl (1911-?) and Kenneth George (1914-1945 died in New Guinea on active service). Her husband died at 246 Grange Rd Ormond on 19 AUgust 1951. Alice Victoria RICHMONDAlice RICHMOND was born 13 September 1879 at Hotham, Melbourne. She married Charles Frederick WENDT in 1905. Charles appeared in court in June 1906 charged with leaving his wife without adequate means of support. He was ordered to pay 5 shillings per week. They appear to have been reconsiled as they went on to have four children: Frederick Andrew (1909-1973), Edna Alice Jane (1911), Iris Norma (1914) and Freda Irene (1917). Alice died in Victoria in 1963. Return to Thomas Richmond page Last updated: 07/11/2020 |
