John Herbert Goodliffe

John Herbert (sometimes known as "Bertie") was Edwin and Elizabeth's second son. He was born on the 28 June 1873 in Nottingham. By 1881 his parents Edwin and Elizabeth had separated and John (listed as Herbert aged 7) was living with Arthur (36) and Eliza (33) Clarke of 50 Arkwright St, Nottingham. Arthur was Elizabeth's older brother. He was a hairdresser. John Herbert did not follow his uncle or other siblings into hairdressing. Instead by 1891 he was an assistant pork butcher.

1891 census for John Herbert GOODLIFFE working as a pork butcher at 228 North Sherwood St, Nottingham.

Shortly after the 1891 census John Herbert left the butchery and tried his hand at being a professional musician. He married Elizabeth GLOVER on 4 October 1897 at the Nottingham Registry Office. John gave his age as 28 but was actually only 23 or 24. Elizabeth gave her age as 30 but was in fact 39, or about 17 years his elder. By the time of the 1901 census Elizabeth had returned to her correct age of 46.

Who was Elizabeth GLOVER?

Elizabeth Ann was born 18 December 1857 in Derby to Edward GREATOREX and Norah (SMITH).

Elizabeth married John Wilson GLOVER on 22 August 1872 in St Werburgh, Derby and they had four children: Mary Elizabeth GLOVER (1878-1879), James Edward GLOVER (1879), Francis Stephen GLOVER (1880) and Richard William GLOVER (1882). But Edward soon abandoned Elizabeth, allegedly living with a succession of women. Elizabeth petitioned for divorce on 30 June 1891; this was granted on 18 December 1891 and made final on 28 June 1892. Elizabeth then filed for maintenance and on 21 June 1895 was awarded 2/6 per week for each of the three surviving children. In the 1891 census Elizabeth (widowed) was living at 28 Curzon St, Nottingham with sons Frank (10), James (8) and Charles (5)

John and Elizabeth are widely reported to have had 2 children, but in the 1911 census Elizabeth recorded that she had 4 children but two had died. (These children are unlikely to be from her first marriage as she had 4 children of which 3 survived). There is a birth for a Berty GOODLIFFE (mother GREATOREX) in Nottingham in 1895, died 1896 but no other births that would fit the dates and names. Also there were no other Goodliffe-Greatorex marriages that could account for the birth of Bertie.

In 1901 John and Elizabeth were in Nottingham with son Alfred. They had Elizabeth's youngest son Frank (from her first marriage) with them. In 1911 John and Alfred were touring Wales with their musical act while Elizabeth was at 61 Annesley St, Nottingham with young Archie.

John Herbert GOODLIFFE and "Les Trippellos"

After abandoning the butcher's shop, John developed his musical career. He played the piano but soon became noted for his skill with the saxophone, billing himself as the "King of Saxophonists" or "Signor Trippellos" and his act as "Les Trippellos". He soon developed his act to include young performers, including his sons Ralph and Archie. But he ran foul of the law in this regard. In January 1909 he was fined 40 shillings under the Employment of Children Act 1903 for employing John Alfred (Ralph), a "boy aged 10 years and 10 months on the stage at 9.50 on the night of 20 December 1908". But this did not deter him. In early 1910 The Stage - a London newspaper - reported the introduction of Ralph Goodliffe, "a gifted juvenile musician". (John would go on to become "Jan Ralfini" the big band conductor and promoter).

Les Trippellos featured a number of juvenile performers, but by 1911 the main characters were John, his sons Ralph and Archie (Archie later became Archie André, another big band leader) and "Elsie" - Clara Elizabeth Hargreaves. Clara, Ralph and Archie feature in advertising and postcards from the time, with Clara playing cello, keyboards and an unusual glockenspiel.

Who were "Moppy" and "Tootleboom"?

Death of "Signor Trippellos" - John Herbert GOODLIFFE

Les Trippellos enjoyed success as a musical hall act through the early 1910s. They entertained the troops during the war advertising that they were not able to join the army as they were either too old or too young. But it all ended for John "Signor Trippellos" GOODLIFFE when he died on 18 December 1917 at West Ham Hospital, Ilford, London. He was aged only 44. The cause of death was "sub-phrenic abscess", an accumulation of infected fluid between the diaphragm, liver and spleen, sometime caused by a ruptured appendix. In his Will John left his estate to his two sons John and Archie. Specifically he left his professional business including the name "Les Trippellos" to his son John. His wife Elizabeth is not mentioned. He left his cash in the bank to Clara Elizabeth HARGREAVES of 254 Burley Rd, Leeds.

Who was Clara Elizabeth HARGREAVES?

In 1917 the Will of John GOODLIFFE left his cash in the bank to Clara HARGREAVES.Who was she and why did she inherit the money? Clara was born 15 May 1890 in Leeds to Thomas and Louisa HARGREAVES. Thomas was a butcher. By 1901 the family had moved to Headingly and Clara was recorded as "Lizzie". By 1911 Clara had become a musician, working for John Goodliffe as part of Les Trippellos. Her stage name was "Elsie" and she played the cello and glockenspiel. The 1911 census finds her living with John Goodliffe and his son Archie while on tour in Aberdare, Wales (see above census record and the photos of Les Trippellos).

1890 baptism for Clara HARGREAVES at Park Chapel, Leeds.

1901 census for Clara "Lizzie" HARGREAVES at 370 Kirkstall Rd, Leeds.

Some time soon after 1901 Clara joined John Goodliffe and his Les Trippellos Troupe of juvenile musicians. Promotional photos and postcards show her playing cello and glockenspiel. In the 1911 census Clara was living with John Goodliffe while they were on tour at Aberdare, Wales. The census was taken on 2 April 1911. A few weeks earlier, on 3 March 1911, Clara HARGREAVES had given birth to a child - Herbert Goodliffe HARGREAVES - at 68 Railway Tce, Rugby in Warwickshire. A father was not named on the birth registration but as she was living with John at the time and with a middle name of Goodliffe it is most probable that John was the father. The house at 68 Railway Tce was occupied by Arthur Margetts, a baker, and his wife Violet. Four weeks after the birth of Herbert the Marketts had 2 new boarders, both involved in the theatre.

By 1921 Hester Miller had moved to 61 James St Rugby to live with her daughter Alice. Herbert HARGREAVES was now at 10 Alfred St, living with Herbert MILLER and his family, Herbert being Hester's son.

When John GOODLIFFE (aka "Signor Trippellos") died in December 1917 the informant to his death was his sister-in-law Susan Goodliffe, rather than Clara Hargreaves. It appears that Clara (aka "Elsie") had already left John and the Trippellos. From November 1916 through to November 1918 there are regular newspaper reports and advertising for the Acland-Gwynne Trio, of which Clara was a part. The others being Leon T ACLAND and Mollie GWYNNE. Acland and Gwynne are credited with writing several published music pieces for piano and voice. There are no further newspaper items about Clara after November 1918. By the time of the 1921 census Clara appears to have been back in Leeds living with her aunt.

Now settled back in Yorkshire, Clara married Edward BOOT at Pontefract, Yorksire in September quarter 1921. It is no surprise that Edward was also a musician - a violinist, but by 1921 was also a widower. Edward had married Lucy Bell CHAPMAN in Harrowgate St Marks on 16 October 1906. They had three children before Lucy died in 1913 (Kathleen Mary, 1908; Edward Basil, 1910; and Nora, 1911 ).

By 1939 Edward and Clara appear to have given up the music business as their main occupations. Edward had become a grocer and Clara was a shop assistant.

Edward died at Harrowgate General Hospital on 18 Feb 1957, late of 1 Low Lane, Darley, Harrowgate. Clara apparently lived on at 1 Low Lane for many years. She died at 15 Station Vew, Harrowgate on 15 September 1986 aged 96.

What became of Herbert Goodliffe HARGREAVES?

Within a month of his birth in March 1911, Herbert was living with the MILLER family in Rugby, Warwickshire. He was recorded there in the 1911 and 1921 censuses. Herbert married Winifred Blanche GREENWOOD on 26 August 1935 at Doncaster. In 1939 they were living at 61 Broadway, Wakefield. Herbert was a piano teacher.

1939 Register for Herbert and Winifred HARGREAVES. Where was their young daughter Sylvia?.

Herbert and Winifred HARGREAVES had two daughters: Sylvia Mary (2 Mar 1937 - 8 Nov 2018) who married Victor John CADWALADR in 1957, they had three children, and Hazel Christine (10 Feb 1947 - 4 Apr 2004) who did not marry.

Both Winifred and Herbert died young. Winifred died 17 Dec 1956 at 18 Halton Rd, Wakefield aged only 49. Herbert Goodliffe HARGREAVES died the following year on 3 October 1957 at Southmoor Hospital, Hemsworth, (today a dementia facility) aged 46. Neither left a Will but on application probate for both people was granted to Sylvia Mary CADWALADR - their older daughter.

John's wife - Elizabeth GOODLIFFE

John's wife - Elizabeth Ann GREATOREX/GLOVER/GOODLIFFE - is not mentioned in John's Will and was not the informant at his death. But despite being 16 years his elder, Elizabeth outlived John by 28 years. Seven years after John died, Elizabeth married George BRATHERTON on 18 October 1924 at Lancaster. George was aged 60 and Elizabeth was 59. But George died in June 1927 at Lancaster, leaving Elizabeth a widow for the third time. By 1939 she was living with her son James and his family in Nottingham. Elizabeth died on 7 February 1945 in Nottingham. She had been residing at 11 Tennyson St, Radford but died at Vale Brook Lodge, 700 Hucknall Rd, Nottingham.

The Children of John Herbert and Elizabeth GOODLIFFE

John Alfred GOODLIFFE aka "Jan RALFINI" (1898-1976)

John Alfred was born in Brighton, Sussex on 8 March 1898, presumably while his father John was performing his music hall act there. John married Jean Annie Anderson CHRISTIE at the Lambeth London Registry Office on 25 January 1917. They had four children before Jan left her for Gladys HUBY. He had four children with Gladys before leaving her for Harriet Collie MILLAR (aka Terry GOODLIFFE).

Archie GOODLIFFE (1901-1954)

Archie was born on 2 April 1901 at 193 Mansfield Rd, Nottingham and presumably named after his uncle, Archie (Archibald Ralph). It appears that he soon joined his father and older brother on stage, but in 1911 was at home with his mother. By 1912 he was travelling the country with his father, as there are school admissions for him at Aberfarenny and Ebbw Vale, Wales (15 April 1912 to 19 April 1912); Croft Terrace, Jarrow; Sunderland, Durham (20 October 1913 to 24 October 1913); Lancaster North ("left to London, here on a visit"); Shirebrook Derbyshire (1 December 1913 to 5 Dec 1913). By 1921 Archie was aged 20 and now working as a musician on his own at the Palace Theatre. In the 1921 census he was boarding with Mrs Mary Jane Hodgson and her son Tom (a hairdresser), at 3 Junction St Carlisle.

3 - 7 Junction St, Carlisle - it is still a men's hairdresser today.

Archie became an accomplished musician like his father and brother. He was known variously as Archie Goodliffe, Andre Goodliffe and Archie Andre and even Archie Ralfini. The newspapers reported on him in 1929 ( 'The Era' 09/01/1929): " Cinema M.D.’S Struggle for Success: Archie Ralfini, brother of Jan Ralfini —who, by the way, opens this week at the Hammersmith Palais de Danse — has just taken over the musical directorship of the Rialto Super Cinema. Birmingham, and has scored an immediate success with his very close synchronisation to the pictures and his musical interludes, both of which he makes a special feature. Mr. Ralfini and his brother are the sons and only remaining relations of the famous Signor Trippello, the saxophone virtuoso 20 years ago. It was with his father that Archie first gained his experience when he was a child and a member of his father’s Music Hall show, known as ‘Les Trippellos’, playing drums, glockenspiel, tubular bells and the violin."

Archie GOODLIFFE married Henrietta HEPTONSTALL in Selby, West Yorkshire on 16 December 1924. Henrietta had been born in Selby on 12 April 1902 to James Edward HEPTONSTALL (a butcher) and Elizabeth (CARLEE). Archie and Henrietta (RIta in the 1939 register) had one son - Gordon GOODLIFFE, born 15 February 1925 at 11 Hilda St, Selby. (Note the birth date in the 1939 register is wrong.)

Archie, wife Henrietta and their young son Gordon.

In about 1933 Archie and his wife Henrietta parted ways. In the 1939 register Archie was boarding in Acton, London. Henrietta and Gordon were living at 141 Randolph Ave, Paddington, London. Henrietta was recorded as "Rita" but this was later changed to Henrietta and surname "BUCKINGHAM" was changed to GOODLIFFE and later still to "ALDERMAN".

Clearly Archie and Henrietta later divorced (30 June 1943 in London). Archie married Barbara Louise HARLEY on 18 June 1945 in Cambridge. Barbara was a dancer born in Staines, London on 4 October 1916, so was 15 years younger than Archie. Archie and Barbara had two children.
Archie GOODLIFFE died on 17 September 1954 at Moseley Birmingham. Barbara outlived Archie by 25 years. She moved to Burrows Park, Braunston to live with her son Ivor, where she died 15 Sept 1979.
Meanwhite Henrietta HEPTONSTALL later married Walter George ALDERMAN in 1953 in Claro, Yorkshire. She died in Oxford in 1991.

Gordon (Peter) GOODLIFFE - son of Archie and Henrietta - was born 15 February 1925 at 11 Hilda St, Selby, Yorkshire (he appears to have added the name "Peter" later in life). The family soon moved to London where as a young boy he played parts in various film productions. In 1939 he and his mother were living at 141 Randolph Ave, Paddington London where Gordon was "learning photography". He and his mother moved to Selby, Yorkshire and then to Harrowgate where he became a photographer working with James Newell COCKCROFT (born 1888 in Bradford). . He joined the Ministry of Defence during he war and on D-Day (6 June 1944) landed in France. On his return to Harrowgate in 1945 he married Dorothy Hannah COCKCROFT, the daughter of his photographic business partner. The business was dissolved in 1953. Gordon and Dorothy had three children. Gordon moved to Oxford where in 1965 he married Rosemary MYERS and they had two children. Gordon taught photography at Oxford Brookes University, retiring in 1986. He died in Oxford on 31 May 2009.

Gordon Goodliffe

(As written by Gordon Goodliffe and shared by Michael Thomas on Ancestry.)

"Gordon was the only child of Archie Goodliffe and Henrietta Heptonstall. About the age of 5 the family moved to London where his Father playing at the Carlton Cinema, Essex Street, London. The Carlton Cinema opened in 1930 with Harold Lloyd’s first talkie, “Welcome Danger”. It had a colourful Egyptian style façade, is an exotic landmark and has been a bingo hall since the 1970s. In about 1932 Gordon lived at 33 Villiers Street, near Charing Cross Station. He was at St Martins School in Trafalgar Square and during this time had parts in Film productions; Rembrandt, Things to Come and a number of small productions. This enterprise meant that Gordon did spend some time playing truant from school - at his mother’s desire.

Gordon’s father departed when he was about 9 years old. After this the family moved to several locations in London finally moving to Brunswick Street; from where they were bombed out and departed to his Grandparents house in Selby. Gordon’s Grandfather was a Master Butcher. At some point Henrietta Goodliffe obtained a job in Harrogate and Gordon followed her when she found a place to live. Harrogate is where Gordon worked for the Ministry Of Aircraft Production; M A P, as a photographer; working on details of the first jet aeroplane. He followed this by volunteering for service in the R.A.M.C. and made the D-day landing; attached to the 2 F D S (RAMC) at Juno Beach; just in front of Graye-su-Mer; 8am 6th June 1944. After Bruxelles Gordon was transferred to India from 1945 to April 1947 when he was demobbed and returned to Harrogate. He departed the R.A.M.C. as Staff Sergeant; Radiographer. His marriage to Dorothy was between the French-India engagements in 1945.

In Harrogate Gordon opened a Photographic studio undertaking all types of works but certainly a lot of weddings. In 1959 Gordon went to London to seek a better photographic opportunity which unfortunately didn’t come to fruition so he took a position at Cambridge’s “Labgear” as an electronic Engineer/Designer. In the September he landed a position in Oxford; The College of Art and Technology. He later grew in to the elated position at Oxford Brookes University. During his engagement he continued to undertake private work via Sir William Crawford’s Advertising Agent, London. A few of the projects undertaken were the Motor Show, Boat Show and Farm Show as well as 6 short films for the Yorkshire based Croda International.

In 1965 in Oxford Gordon married for a second time, to Rosemary Myers and had two further children, Jonathan M and Judy. While in Oxford Gordon did some private work for the Sunday Times. The most interesting event was when he caused a D-Notice to be put on the Sunday Times [formal request to the press not to publish as item due to national security concerns] in relation to photographs of the secret swing-wing aircraft. Gordon took early retirement around 1986, with the position of Senior Lecturer in charges of Photography and Cinematic studies; all under the name of “Visual Studies”. He took two Sabbatical’s during his career, the first being in Texas, USA and the second being Sicily. Sicily became a long involvement; over five years or so and where many photographs were made and he met some very loyal and helpful people. Gordon drove around most of Sicily, especially the Madonie where he ran a summer workshop every July for four years. He returned ten years later, at their pressing request, for a final workshop."
