The Goodliffe Family of NottinghamArchibald Ralph GOODLIFFE - first son of Edwin Daniel and Elizabeth GOODLIFFE
Archibald was born on 9 December 1871 at 37 Alfred St South, Nottingham. In the 1881 census he was living with his mother, Elizabeth at 7 Oliver Tce, Nottingham. His father was estranged from Elizabeth and living in London. By 1891 Archie was working as a lace designer and living in a boarding house at 27 Bilbie St, Nottingham.
Archie married Susan Sanson HEARD on 17 April 1892 in Nottingham. Susan was born 6 October 1870 at Nottingham to Joseph HEARD and Harriett SANSON. Harriet was unmarried at that date, but she did marry Joseph on 7 October 1872 at St Marks, Nottingham.
According to the 1911 census Archie and Susan had 8 children, three of whom had died by 1911. The eight are:
In 1901 Archibald Ralph Goodliffe was married and living at 253 St Anns Well Rd . He was a hairdresser and tobacconist working from home. In 1911 they were living at 11 Sycamore Rd, Nottingham, they were still at this address in 1939. Susan Sansom GOODLIFFE died at 11 Sycamore Rd, Nottingham on 5 August 1946. After her death Archie moved to live with his son Harold at 391 Blue Bell Hill, Nottingham. Archie died there on 4 December 1948.
The children of Archibald and Susan GOODLIFFEHarold GOODLIFFE (1893-1970)Harold was born 25 October 1893 in Nottingham. In 1911 he was living at home, aged 17 and a law clerk. But his passion was music and the piano. In a later interview he recalled: "at 18 he set sail in the liner Campania. The liner was to take him seven times to New York, twice to South America and on Mediterranean cruises. Goody ended his life afloat and came back to Nottingham and the silent movies when pianists were always in demand. He became a familiar figure in Nottingham “picture houses” just before the war, supplying the music that set the mood." Harold (known as "Goody" or "Hal") married Maud SAGAR in Worsborough Dale, Yorkshire on 25 January 1914. His occupation was "musician" so presumably he was performing in Yorkshire at the time.
Harold and Maud had three children:
With World War One Goody joined the army. Newspapers later reported he had joined the Royal Dragoons, but actually joined the Royal Fusiliers, 24th Battalion D Company as Private 3244. When his son Ralph was born on 18 Sept 1915 his occupation was Bandsman (professional musician). He claimed he spent two years in the trenches, was gassed and wounded, and returned to England. He did serve in France, entering the theatre on 25 November 1915. After his return to Britain he was posted to the Labour Corps (as No. 459747) where he entertained the troops in a Forces’ pierrot company (a stock pantomine character that originated in Italy) - hence the photograph of him in costume. He was discharged from the Army on 10 April 1919. After a career as a pianist he retired to 391 Blue Bell Hill Rd, Nottingham, citing the rise of jazz, which he could not tolerate.
In 1921 Maud and children (Annie, Ralph and Rita) were visiting Maud's parents at 52 Park Rd, Worsborough Bridge, Yorkshire. Harold is not recorded in the 1921 census. In 1939 Harold, Maud and their two daughters were at Blue Bell Hill.
Harold died at Blue Bell Hill on 8 January 1970. After Harold's death his wife Maud went to live in Yorkshire close to their daughter Rita. She died on 12 October 1985 at "Hollygarth" 17 Holly Grove, Thorpe Willoughby, Yorkshire.
Walter Arnold GOODLIFFE (1895-1973)Walter was born 21 May 1895 in Nottingham. In 1911 he was living at home and working as a hairdresser's assistant. Later he establilshed his own business at 39 St Ann's Well Rd, Nottingham. Walter married Rebecca BROWN on 21 January 1917 at Nottingham St Ann. Rebecca had been born on 14 January 1890 in Nottingham to George BROWN and Jemima (BIGLEY). In 1921 Walter and Rebecca were living at 65 St Ann's Well Rd, Nottingham. Walter and Rebecca had one daughter - Doris, born 12 May 1923 in Nottingham. In 1939 Walter, Rebecca and Doris were living at 39 St Ann's Well Rd, Nottingham. Doris married Harry Denis William RICHARDS in 1947 in Nottingham and they had one daughter. Rebecca GOODLIFFE died in Nottingham in 1970. Walter died at 292 Wollaton Vale, Nottingham on 19 January 1973. Doris their daughter died in Rushcliffe, Nottingham in 1978. Annie GOODLIFFE (1896-1986)Annie was born 19 September 1896 in Nottingham. In 1911 and 1921 she was living at home. Annie married Ernest Charles TAYLOR in Cambridge in 1923. Ernest was born 12 November 1896 in Cambridge to Charles TAYLOR and Elizabeth (WILSON). Annie and Ernest had one child - Derek Charles TAYLOR born 29 November 1926 in London. (NOTE: Most trees on Ancestry wrongly name this child as Derek John TAYLOR, and give his birth as 2 August 1924. Derek John's parents were Bertie TAYLOR and Iris JOLLIFFE.) In 1939 Annie and Ernest with one child were living at 74 Willow St, Romford, Essex. Ernest TAYLOR died in Romford in 1945. Annie survied him by 41 years, dying in Havering, London in 1986. Their son Derek married Freda Elizabeth MANSON in Romford in 1952. Freda died in Gloucester on 2 November 2011 and Derek died there on 2 January 2018.
Herbert GOODLIFFE (1900-1958)Herbert was born 9 January 1900 in Nottingham. He followed his father into the hairdressing business but was also a keen watercolour artist. Herbert enlisted in the Army and was wounded in the right thigh. He was awarded a 20% pension for life. Herbert married Florence Gertrude BATES in Nottingham in 1926. They had one daughter - Pamela Mary born 8 April 1931. Pamela married Andrew McLAUGHLIN in 1954 and had two children. Pamela died at Hemel Hampstead on 6 October 2003.
Herbert died at 27 Nottingham Rd, Melton Mowbray Leicester on 27 June 1958. His wife Florence remained at this address for some time after his death but later moved back to Nottingham. She died at 116 Musters Rd, West Bridgford on 27 September 1985. Charles GOODLIFFE (1904-1963)Charles was born 6 February 1904 in Nottingham. He became a dental "mechanic" or technician making false teeth and other implants. Charles married Eva MITCHELL at St Anns Church, Nottingham on 25 September 1930.
