Henry Arnold was the third son of Thomas and Elizabeth Goodliffe. He was born at Lambley Lodge, Belton on 25 March 1837. Henry's birth together with those of his siblings was recorded at the Morcott and Barrowden Baptist Church, Rutland around 1837. Henry and siblings were later baptised at Belton St Peter on 1 August 1847.

In the 1841 and 1851 censuses Henry Arnold was living at Lambley Lodge with the family, where his father John was a grazier.

Marriage to Elizabeth LAWSON

Henry Arnold married Elizabeth LAWSON in Nottingham in late 1860.

Henry became a grocer in Nottingham, initially at Hucknall Torkard. He was in partnership with his brother (Alfred Pitt GOODLIFFE) for a while as grocers and tea dealers, but the partnership was dissolved on 10 February 1864. Henry appears to have struggled in business, perhaps as the market chaned, from tea dealer to grocer to fallow chandler. In 1879 his business was liquidated, perhaps before his creditors filed for bankruptcy.

Derbyshire Times 11 January 1879.

In 1861 Henry and his wife Elizabeth were living at Main St North, Hucknall Torkard, they had Henry's brother Albert Stokes, aged 14, living with them.

The Children of Henry Arnold and Elizabeth GOODLIFFE

John Thomas GOODLIFFE (1861-1948)

John Thomas was born late 1861 to Henry and Elizabeth GOODLIFFE, the event registered at Basford, Nottingham. John is recorded in the 1871 and 1881 censuses with his parents at Sneinton. John married Emily Alice ONIONS in 1888 in Bradford. Emily was a widow with 3 small children. She was also 11 years older than John.

Who was Emily Alice ONIONS?

She had been born Emily Alice FEARNLEY on 23 November 1850 in Scholes, Yorkshire. She had married George Frederick ONIONS at Birstall St Peter on 13 October 1871.

Of the children of John and Emily GOODLIFFE:

Reginald John Arnold Firth GOODLIFFE (1889-1958): was born 24 March 1889 in Bradford and baptised 3 August 1893 at Bradford St James at the same time as his younger sister Constance. By 1911 Reginald was aged 22 and a "farm pupil" with James Mantott at The Grange, West Rasen, Lincolnshire.

1911 census: West Rasen, Lincolnshire.
Emigration to Australia

Life as a farm servant in Lincolnshire apparently did not appeal to Reginald. On 4 February 1913 he boarded the White Star Line steam ship "Pakeha" bound for Sydney, Australia.

1913 passenger list for the "SS Pakeha" bound for Sydney.

We are not sure what Reginald did when he arrived in Sydney, but on 2 November 1915 he signed up for the Australian Imperial Force, to serve overseas. He was aged 26 years and 8 months, he was 1.75m tall and he weighed 69kg. His occupation was "electrical mechanic". He joined the 2nd Ammunition Company and travelled overseas in early 1916, first to Egypt and then to France. He was promote to bombadier, then corporal and then to sergeant on 24 April 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry on 20 November 1917. He returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged from the Army on 2 July 1919.

In 1928 Reginald and his half-sister Hester ONIONS returned to the UK to visit their parents. They arrived in London on 6 May 1928 onboard the "Comorin". They returned to Sydney 3 months later, departing London on 24 August 1928 onboard the "Mooltan".

It appears that Reginald never married. He lived in various addresses in Gosford. His occupation in the Electoral Rolls was "electrician", but in a 1934 newspaper article he was "a local photographer" and ex-electrician.

Reginald died in Sydney, Australia on 7 February 1958. His address in the UK probate record was given as 77 Lord St, Roseville and 29 Donnison St, Gosford. Probate was awarded in London, where his assets were valued at £1933, presumably from the inhertance from his father. He was buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery, Sydney, together with his sister Constance.

Constance Lawson Watkinson GOODLIFFE (1892-1950): was born 22 January 1892 in Bradford. She lived with her parents, presumably looking after her father after her mother died in 1936. She was still with her father when he died in 1948, when Constance would have been aged 56. Soon after probate was granted (and presumably she had received money from the estate) Constance set sail for Sydney Australia to join her brother Reginald and her half-sister Hester. She arrived in Freemantle, Perth on 1 February 1950 then continued to Sydney. However she never made it, dying at sea on 7 February 1950. She was buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery, Sydney.

George Oliver ONIONS (1873-1961): was born 1873 in Bradford to George Frederick and Emily Alice ONIONS. He studied art in London. He married Amy Roberta RUCK on 10 June 1919 at Christ Church, Hampstead, London. Amy had been born in India, the daughter of Lt-Colonel Arthur Ashley RUCK (now Chief Constable of Carnarvonshire). He was now an author of short stories and she a journalist.

George and Amy had two children: George Arthur Oliver (1912-1966) and William Richard Oliver (1913-2007). They moved to Wales, where George (now known as just George OLIVER) died 9 April 1961. Amy died there on 11 August 1978, 9 days after her 100 birthday.

Hester Agnes ONIONS (1873-1960): was born 2 October 1876 in Bradford to George Frederick and Emily Alice ONIONS. She was baptised at Bradford St John on 11 April 1888 together with her younger sister Emily. Her father George had died in 1886. Her mother Emily married John GOODLIFFE later in 1888. In the 1891 census Hester, aged 14, was living with John and Emily. At the time of the 1901 census Hester (recorded as Agnes) was visiting Lewis and Frances SYKES at 6 Launceston St, Halifax, Yorkshire. Hester then trained as a nurse at Lewisham Infirmary, qualifying in 1910. In the 1911 census she was working as a "companion" but more probably a nurse to Mrs Amy DAWSON, aged 30 who had 4 small children. The address was 111 Dartmouth Rd, Cricklewood, Willesden.

At the outbreak of war Hester joined the Army and was soon in France as part of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS). She served as a nurse throughout the war, being promoted to Sister ONIONS and in charge of an acute surgical ward. She was awarded the 1914 Ribbon and Star for her services and also the Royal Red Cross decoration. (Her war service record can be download in PDF format here.)

After leaving the Army in 1919 Hester was awarded a war gratuity payment. She also applied to the Overseas Settlement Committee for funding to emigrate to Australia. Meanwhie she returned to Lewisham Hospital. Presumably her application was approved as she boarded the "SS Bahia Castillo" on 17 April 1920 at London, bound for Sydney, Australia. The ship was full of Australian soldiers being repatriated after the war.

Emily Couch ONIONS (1878-1961): was born 7 October 1878 in Bradford to George Frederick and Emily Alice ONIONS. She was baptised at Bradford St John on 11 April 1888 along with her sister Hester. After her mother married John GOODLIFFE Emily lived with her parents, being recorded with them in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses living in Baildon, Yorkshire. She married Arthur LEASE at Christ Church Hampstead on 10 August 1911. Arthur was an engineer, living at Baildon, Yorkshire at the time of marriage.

1911 marriage for Emily Couch ONIONS.

After their marriage Emily and Arthur lived in Baildon. They appear to have had one child - Robert J LEASE (born 1913, died 1916). In 1921 they were living at 4 Rushcroft Tce, Baildon.

1921 census: 4 Rushcroft Tce, Baildon, Yorkshire.

After Arthur retired the couple moved to Bournemouth. Arthur died at Strathallan Nursing Home, Boscombe, Bournemouth on 27 February 1934. Emily remained in Bournemouth, but by 1939 had moved into the Carlton Hotel, Grove Rd, Bournemouth. Emily Couch LEASE died in Bournemouth on 25 June 1940.

Annie GOODLIFFE was born 14 March 1864 in Hucknall Torkard, Nottingham to Henry and Elizabeth GOODLIFFE. In the 1881 census Annie was aged 17 and a "teacher of music". She remained living with her parents and teaching music, as recorded in the censuses until 1911, when she was aged 47. By 1921, with her father Henry now retired, Annie, her sister Emily and their father had moved to 26 The Grove, Kettering. They had a boarder, Lizzie BODDIMER, living with them. Annie was the head of house and still a music teacher. Henry died later in 1921. By 1939 Annie and Emily had moved to 41 Union St, Kettering. They still had Lizzie BODDIMER living with them. Annie and Lizzie were now recorded as "incapacitated". (Lizzie was born in Ketttering in 1867 and died there in 1955).
