me 2/6; the first and last bit of literature I made money by. Some time
after I heard several of the course of lectures delivered in that chapel
by the Rev. James Gilbert in defence of Christianity, and to meet the
objections to, and denial of its truth, by Carlisle, a popular infidel
lecturer. They were very able, deeply interesting and popular, to me
very satisfactory. An event happened in October 1826 which had very much
to do with, and influence on, my after life. The teachers and friends of
the Sunday school, were holding a tea-meeting. It being the Goose Fair
holiday time, being busy, I went late. The old superintendent met me
coming. He said “On my young friend, I went you to see two young friends
of mine home, they live a good distance off”. Before I could reply a
fellow teacher said “He’s only just come, he shan’t go, to send him
away, it’s too bad”. I was just budding into a young
