John the next was born in 1798. He had gifts for learning, but was unfortunately troubled with an uncomfortable, suspicious selfish temper, which developed into much the same tendencies as my poor sister Ann. James my next brother in his young days was a general favourite as a jolly, good-hearted fellow, ready to do a good turn for anybody often to the injury of himself. He did not gain any prize for quickness and correctness in learning he liked work and play better than books. He was unfortunate in being put apprentice to a drunken Sam Richmond. He never learned his trade, but learned some sad habits which were a sore trial to his family – another instance of a wrong choice of business.
