The Goldsworthy Family Of Devon and LondonAnne Sarah GOLDSWORTHY 1837-1895
Anne Sarah Goldsworthy (1837-1895)Ann(e) was born 17 February 1837 at 10 New St Marylebone, London and baptised at St Marylebone Church on 16 March 1837.
In the 1841 and 1851 censuses Annie was living with her parents at 10 New St.
Annie married William WILLIAMSON, a "Gentleman", on 22 September 1858 at St Marylebone Church. William's father was also William, a licenced victualler.
Annie and William had 3 children:
Who was William WILLIAMSON?In October 1859 when Maud was baptised, William and Annie were living at 10 York Terrace, St Paul's Rd, Islington London. William was a licenced victualler. By the time of the 1861 census Anne, William and Maud were living with Anne's father John the baker at 10 New St. William was still a licenced victualler. When their youngest son Albert Edwin was baptised in 1865 William was now a traveller. After this event William seems to vanish. In 1871 Annie and the 3 children were still at 10 New St, but William her husband was absent. Annie was shown as married so we can presume William was still alive. In 1881 Annie was still living at 10 New St, with her son Albert Edward WILLIAMSON but William is again absent. The most likely explanation is provided by Court records. A William Williamson, traveller, aged 32, born London and well educated was convicted of embezzling money from his master Edward Jenkins. William had been arrested on 26 June 1867, was convicted and sentenced to five years penal servitude. In the 1871 census there is a William WILLIAMSON in the Male Convict Prison at Gillingham, aged 35 born London, occupation traveller. This likely to be the correct person.
After the 1861 census William the traveller no longer lived with Annie and the Goldsworthy family. Annie remained at the bakery at 10 New St for the rest of her life. Annie Sarah WILLIAMSON died at Marylebone in August 1895. She is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery, grave Con/24223 along with her parents John and Mary and her unmarried sister Jessie (who died in 1907). What became of Annie's husband William WILLIAMSON? The Children of William WILLIAMSON and ANNE GOLDSWORTHYMaud Mary WILLIAMSON 1859-1942Maud Mary was born in mid-1859 and baptised at St Paul Canonbury, Islington on 19 October 1859.
Maud became an accomplished actress, mainly in the song and dance or vaudeville genre. She made her name in Australia, eventually teaming up, both professionally and romantically, with Alfred Edward CORK (better known as Alfred WOODS), an Australian actor and theatre manager. They wrote and performed across Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA and eventually back to London, where they died in 1942 and 1943 respectively. There is more about Maud's life hereWilliam WILLIAMSON 1863-1905William was born in Hornsey, Edmonton (according to the 1861 census), north of London and registered in Edmonton in the March quarter 1863. There is no record of a baptism there but a baptism at Holy Trinity, Marylebone Rd on 17 May 1863 may be him. The location and dates fit and the parents were William and Annie. William's occupation was "clerk" casting some doubt on this record.
In 1871 William (aged 8) with his mother Annie and siblings Maud and Albert were living at 10 New St with John the baker. William (senior) was absent. Both Williams seems to have missed out on the 1881 and 1891 censuses. William (junior) reappears in 1901 as a baker at 10 New St. He is now a widower with a son, Albert Nelson.
Who did William marry?
To backtrack a little, William WILLIAMSON married Annie Wells GOEBY at St Stephens Walworth London on 8 March 1890. They soon had a son, Albert Nelson, born early 1891 and baptised 26 April 1891 at St Philip the Apostle Church, Camberwell. It appears Annie died in childbirth or soon after. She was buried at Nunhead Cemetery, London on 13 March 1891. Albert attended the St Marylebone Primary School, being enrolled on 13 April 1896. His address at the time was 10 New St.
William WILLIAMSON is not in the 1911 census. His son Albert was living with aunt Ada Emily and grandmother Elizabeth GOEBY, suggesting his father William had died. There is a death for a William WILLIAMSON aged 42 at Camberwell in June 1905. This is likely to be the correct person.
Albert Nelson WILLIAMSON enlisted as a Territorial in the British Army. His service file is below (click on each page fort he full version). It appears he enlisted at Hertford on 9 September 1914, quite early as war was declared on 28 July 1914. He joined the East Anglia Brigade RFA (Royal Field Artillery) as a Gunner but in December 1914 the brigade, as part of the Wessex Division were sent to India to relieve British and Indian Regular troops for the Western Front. The artillery left behind their horses and their ammunition column, which were needed in France. The brigade was later re-equipped in India with modern 18-pounder guns, 4 per battery. On 14 January 1917 Albert and the artillery brigade were then posted to Mesopotamia where they fought the Turks along the Tigris River to Baghdad after which they were sent to the rear. Albert, along with most of the Indian Army and many government officials brought in from India formed a new administration in the area. Albert remained in Mesopotamia until 23 February 1919. He was then shipped home and left the service on 25 April 1919. After his return from Mesopotamia Albert returned to the Civil Service. He had been appointed as a temporary clerk in 1907 and had been promoted to a second division clerk in the Post Office in 1914. By 1921 he had returned to living with his aunt Ada Emily (GOEBY) BRIGNALL who was now living at 9 Salisbury Tce, Friern Barnet, north London. In 1924 he was still with Ada Emily but later moved to live next door to his uncle Frank GOEBY at 104 and 106 Ashurst Rd, Friern Barnet.
Alfred Nelson married Emma TOWERS on 10 May 1924 at St Paul's Church Friern Barnet in north London. He was aged 33 and Emma was 21. Emma had been born in Transvaal, South Africa on 1 June 1902. Albert and Emma had two children: Hazel D. WILLIAMSON born 1925 and Mavis A. WILLIAMSON born 3 May 1928. In 1939 they were living at Rose Hill Cottage, Newell Green.
Mavis WILLIAMSON died in Holborn, London in mid-1948 aged 20.
Albert Edwin WILLIAMSON 1864-1930Albert Edwin was born 17 November 1864 at 12 Grove Place, Alpha Rd, Marylebone to William and Annie WILLIAMSON. He was baptised on 5 February 1865 at St Mary's Church, St Marylebone, London.
Albert was living with his mother Annie at 10 New St in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. He is missing from the 1891 census. Albert married Ada CHAPMAN in late 1890. The marriage was registered at Hackney but there does not appear to be a church record. Ada was the fourth child of Thomas CHAPMAN and Elizabeth APPS, who went on to have 14 children. Thomas was a brickmaker and later a licenced victualler (publican) in Marylebone. Albert and Ada had seven children according to the 1911 census but five had died. Problem is, there are 19 births for WILLIAMSON, mother CHAPMAN between 1890 and 1911. The three who survived were:
We know Albert and Ada lived mostly in London but spent some time in Manchester in the region of Chorlton where Inez and George were baptised in 1896 (Ada Maud had died in 1895). Of the remaining 16 births we can discount some based on location. That leaves us with Horace John (born Aston 1897), Thomas or Isabel (born Chorlton 1898) and Gilbert (born Chorlton 1900). Who were the other children? Unfortunately Albert and Ada are absent from the 1891 census. In 1901 Albert, Ada, Inez and George were living at 7 Graham Mansions, Graham Rd, Hackney, London. Albert was a tailor's salesman. By 1911 they had moved to 17 Baker St, Brixton, London. Albert was a commercial traveller for woollens.
We know little more about Albert and Ada until Ada died on 31 July 1927. She is buried at Willesden New Cemetery, London along with her sister Nellie (Ellen), who died 27 June 1893 aged 25 and soon after she had married Albert ENGSTROM. Of the two Children
Inez WILLIAMSON died at 16 Poynter House London on 24 April 1972. George Arthur WILLIAMSON: George was born 8 December 1896 and baptised with his sister in Manchester on 1 March 1896. George is with the family in London in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. George Arthur married Ida May BARNES in Hammersmith in 1917. Ida was born 26 July 1895 possibly in Pontypool, Wales. George and Ida had four children:
In 1939 the family was at 61 Galloway Rd, Hammersmith. George,Ida and Joan are shown, but the first name and those of three of the children are closed. George was a tool turner.
After 1939 the family remained at Galloway Rd. Ida May died in Hammersmith in 1968. George died in 1986. Return to John Goldsworthy page Last updated: 11 April 2021 |
